On the Breaking Blog: MGMT’s “Metanoia”

8/14/08, 4:28 pm EST

Usually when Rolling Stone gets excited about a new single, it’s because of the tune’s big chorus or heavy riff. But in the case of MGMT’s new single “Metanoia,” the thrill is over its utter lack of pop sensabilities, as the song is a 13 minute freak out jam that includes bits of Beatles psychedelia, haunted house organs and all sorts of over-the-top singing. Head on over to the Breaking blog for more on “Metatonia” (currently available at iTunes).

Never have I come across a singer that made me put away my AC/DC, BLACK SABBATH, and JIMMY HENDRIX.
I walked past my bedroom, a transistor radio, and heard a voice that turned my knees to jello. It was SWEET CAROLINE. I was 14 years old, Never heard his name in his life,(Neil Diamond) and was caught for life. Started seeing him in concert on my 16th birthday and officialy was hooked. Her I am, 46 years old. In all that time I’ve only missed 2 concerts and will probably never miss another as long as he, in his well mannered stature, keeps his fans happy with concerts. He must be nearing 60, but shoot – in his performances, I can’t tell
Neil will forevery have my heart.

Okay, this song is one of the most entertaining ways to spend 14-minutes.
I can’t decide if they’re trying to be serious and make a who-esque rock opera, or if they were just fooling around for a wicked-long time one day and decided to create this… masterpiece? I don’t know what to call it exactly.
All I can say is, MGMT never ceases to surprise.
