Jonathan Davis Talks Solo LP, Future of Korn: “I’m Waving the Flag for Musicianship”

8/13/08, 2:26 pm EST

With Korn on ice for the time being — save for a rendition of “Kidnap the Sandy Claws” on yet another reissue of the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack — frontman Jonathan Davis has turned his focus towards solo touring and a forthcoming record, which he says won’t just be Korn-style ragers with a different staff. “I always compare it to when Steve Perry went and did ‘Oh Sherrie,’ which is a fucking Journey song,” he says. “It sounded exactly like Journey, and that’s fucked up. I don’t want to do that.”

“I feel like I’m waving the flag for musicianship, trying to bring back bands that can play,” Davis said after his main stage set at this weekend’s Ozzfest. “It seems like a lot of music today is so churned out and simple. I like playing these festivals, because it’s one thing all day, and then here I come on, and everyone’s like, ‘Whoa,’ then back to the grind.”

With a lineup of virtuosos called the Simply Fuckin’ Amazings, Davis says he’s been picking up instrument after instrument on the road from his new bandmates, including violin, didgeridoo, the glass armonica (an instrument designed by Benjamin Franklin), an Armenian wind instrument called the duduk, and his favorite, the biwa, a Japanese lute. “It sounds like a banjo, but they sing with it, and it’s the most fucking passionate, emotional music I’ve ever heard in my life,” Davis said. “I want to include that in my album, because it’s so passionate. Like when you hear a Korn song and it’s really going crazy, these guys do it with a stringy banjo. I want to bring that to kids here who are like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ and open their minds up to something different.”

After Ozzfest, Davis headed home to begin writing his first solo record, which he hopes will be released by the end of November, and will follow it up with another solo tour. As far as the future of Korn (now down to three original members), Davis says it’s more a matter of ‘when’ than ‘if.’ He also is leaving the door open for the two departed members to return down the line (”I never say never”), but with former guitarist Brian “Head” Welch releasing a solo album in September and sometimes drummer David Silvera managing restaurants and raising a family, that will happen later rather than sooner, if at all. “When I’m done with this, I’ll go to my other gig, but right now, I’m having fun,” he said. “I’m not planning that far ahead. This is where I’m at, and I’m really enjoying it.”

Teacher: Very good. Now how about “technical prowess.”
Billy: D-O-E-S-N-T-M-E-A-N-S-H-I-T.
Teacher: Excellent! Now spell “worthless music.”
Billy: K-O-R-N.
Teacher: Oh, sorry Billy. The correct answer is A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G-J-O-N-A-T-H-A- N-D-A-V-I-S-T-O-U-C-H-E-S
Bil ly: Oh, i thought that was how you spelled “waste of time”

Wow | 8/13/2008, 4:53 pm EST

Honestly, I’m not saying this to be cute or funny, but I had NO IDEA that this band was still around. Didn’t everyone realize how shite and unimportant they were after “Follow the Leader”?

ur mama | 8/13/2008, 5:17 pm EST

30 million albums sold worldwide.
6 grammy nominations; 2 wins.
2 albums released last year.
If you don’t know, then you need to ask someone.

Stick it Davis | 8/13/2008, 6:11 pm EST

Waiving the flag for musicianship? What a joke.

Vin Man | 8/13/2008, 7:09 pm EST

Steve Perry’s “Oh Sherie” did NOT sound like Journey.

But the video sucked in the same manner Journey videos sucked.

Arch Stanton | 8/13/2008, 7:17 pm EST

30 million sold. not a chance. More like 7 million in the US and 4 in the rest of the world. it is a fact. Korn have their moments i admit but most of their fans are complete idiots. Long Live Cobain….

Bobby | 8/13/2008, 7:18 pm EST

“It seems like a lot of music today is so churned out and simple.”

And yours isn’t Jonathan? Seriously, just shut the fuck up.

WoW weeeEEEE it's Silly Me | 8/13/2008, 7:51 pm EST

I normally Do Not respond to such ignorant and negative comments such as these here. Can I ask,(directed @ Timbers & Bil ly) does Rolling Stones have you on the payroll as music critics? I must say your reviews are so elequnetly worded, with such depth, passion, and precise knowledge of this person/band. It as if you interviewed Mr.Davis himself. Oh sorry my bad, Mr.Davis is his(Jonathan’s) dad, ha! ;) Jonathan I meant to write.
Did your mother ever learn you some manners or maybe you have heard the wise old saying “If you don’t have anything nice to say, it’s better to not say anything at all?”
Do you realize all you are accomplishing here with your uneducated negative remarks just empower’s this man even more? If my retortical question does not make sense, then might I suggest a little research before hand. First educate, then communicate all your wasted energy of hate. So you don’t come off as a ignorant hate breeder, we have enough hate in this world. I am not a proclaimed Korn fan. Until this last year I had stopped listen to them after their second album. I felt that they were just ‘another sell out band” like many others did To my suprise, ten years later I would find my laten ignorance would change my views and ignorant opinion. As an involved and active parent I felt the need to know what my kids were listening to. I found a personally new gained respect for Korn/Jonathan. I read the lyrics to get a sense of what Jonathan was trying to say. What I found, was the man is very insightful, and is actually trying to educate through his music. So,HEY YOU, Jonathan (like he reads these, lol) thank you for confirming that for me in this interview. I am a lover of music, and just felt some odd connection and could feel it inside. I admire and really respect that you use your fame to enlighten and educate. More importantly,YOU are giving some expansion to the numb minded populas.

Oh, one last thing Timbers? Korn is Korn. Garbage is a completely different band. However Coal Chamber does sound like a Korn cover band. I meant no disrespect with this last comment to CC.
Take Care
Just Silly Me
Duh!

PerrysGirl | 8/13/2008, 8:47 pm EST

“Oh Sherrie” is Steve Perry’s and only Steve Perry’s. The song did NOT have the same sound as Journey. You need to check into rehab quick!

Anonymous | 8/13/2008, 9:32 pm EST

sigh…. sad times it is. I used to love this band, but after ISSUES they just became run-of-the-mill and there latest record was a pile of crap i couldn’t even finish it. they need to just break up and end this crap now

Im with you arch station: long live Cobain!

perry | 8/13/2008, 9:46 pm EST

He could make a fucking gospel record and I wouldn’t care

Snoop | 8/13/2008, 10:51 pm EST

Arch, you would be mistaken. Shocking maybe, to some people, but it’s true. Some of you should spend less time hating, and more time championing the things you enjoy. Don’t try to bring other people down just because you don’t share the same taste.

straight outta albany | 8/14/2008, 3:10 am EST

i consider myself a fan of korn and jonathan davis, but i also consider myself a realist. as someone who follows korn’s every move, i know jon doesnt have the musicianship to pull off something this crazy. real musicianship is about hammering an idea into an actual song. korn’s last album shows jon cant do that. and i gotta say has korn been at all relevant since 1999? the answer is no. korn made the mistake of going from being a metal band to being an alt-rock band when all the nu metal bands threatened them. though the change has kept korn alive the music has suffered because (1) korn is not an alternative band by nature,(2)they do not have the musicianship to hammer out a great record and(3)theyve gotten lazy and they dont have the desire to make great music and they really dont care about the music and theyre just whores for money. as a fan i think this something i absolutely had to say. and as for jon if he is gonna pull this off he better be listening to alot of mastodon(now there’s a relevant band!)

LOL | 8/14/2008, 9:24 am EST

Coming from him, that is sort of like saying, you know, I usually just crap all over the bathroom, but I think now I’ll actually try to crap in the toilet.

Long Live Cobain? | 8/14/2008, 9:45 am EST

You know, if he didn’t die he would have started making shitty music and no one would like him anymore. In fact, he’d be irrelevant. If Korn died in a plane crash (or some other tragic accident) after Issues they would probably be revered as gods, much like Cobain is often thought of today. The 90’s want their artist back? Isn’t Nirvana from the 90’s. Didn’t they only make three studio albums? Didn’t they take Seattle grunge and turn it into something radio accessible? Isn’t that “selling out”?

Does anyone care?

Bopgun | 8/14/2008, 9:50 am EST

This guy has taken the lead on the – Ugliest Rock Star of All Time contest………

Anonymous | 8/14/2008, 11:53 am EST

Yeah I agree with straight outta albany, since 2000 all there records have sounded like every alternative band. They hated being nu-metal so they joined the drift of plan rock bands and stopped sounding different

Swingline | 8/14/2008, 12:00 pm EST

Korn was at their best when they were the right combo of chemically-loaded and driven to make a name for themselves, kinda like Appettie-era GnR.
Once they made it, the sound became flat and repetitive, but that’s not to take away from what they did early on.
They were definitely a band indicative of the 90’s, as you could tell their influences from hip-hop to metal and different points in between.
He aint the best, but certainly not the worst either.

Brian | 8/14/2008, 12:24 pm EST

Urmama, I always laugh when people use record sales to defend bands. Do you know the Jonas Bros. sell lots of records? You like them too? How about that Creed? Kid, Americans buy some dumb shit, and they buy it in droves. That doesn’t make a band any good. And the Grammys?! Have you seen some of the artists that get nominated? Talk about people with no clue. School starts in a few weeks, so go learn something. Maybe concentrate on that English/grammar area.

There's No Winning | 8/14/2008, 2:03 pm EST

If they don’t sell enough, they’re irrelevant; if they sell a lot, they’re like the Jonas Brothers; if they reach a middle-ground, they’re just a run-of-the-mill band.

midi | 8/14/2008, 2:57 pm EST

i think davis is just all about living and having fun, now that he’s been out of his hate-on stage for a while.

duchampy | 8/14/2008, 10:27 pm EST

its funny when people act as though their musical tastes really mean something.

Squiggly J | 8/15/2008, 6:28 am EST

No one wants Jonathan Davis back. His music was shit back in the 90’s and it has only progressively gotten worse. I’m glad Rolling Stone is getting their music news from Hit Parader.

bobo jenkins | 8/15/2008, 3:34 pm EST

really? issues was the last good thing they put out? untouchables was amazing! and dont forget the great work he did on the queen of the damned soundtrack. i agree the last few albums werent very good, but thats what happens when core members leave. you guys are like bitter ex-girlfriends. stop hating so much. you sound like…..jonathan davis.

Rustywood | 8/15/2008, 3:34 pm EST

I was lucky enough to see Jonathan Davis perform live for his Alone I Play tour last year, and I can honestly say the musicianship and emotional impace was unprecedented. I consider it among the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen them all, from Floyd to King Crimson, Tool to Opeth, peter gabriel, david bowie, you name it. Time will prove Jonathan Davis to be the greatest vocalist who survived the 90s and thrived well beyond.

Time will also prove another thing: that every last loser commenting here will be utterly forgotten. Can’t say the same about JD…

dustin | 9/11/2008, 10:26 am EST

ok korn rules, and jon davis can do anything he wants to do musically. he does have the talent to pull a solo record off. If Sully Erna from godsmack can do it, so can Jon Davis. I have all of their cds and dvds. I own pretty much anything u can get from korn. korn will be back to tour together. they are my fav band and always will be.

kornfanforlife | 9/26/2008, 2:53 pm EST

All I have to say is JD and The SFA’s and KoRn are great at what they do. They have passion and talent and nobody can take that away from them. KoRn kicks ass…the best live band I’ve ever seen!

Anonymous | 11/8/2008, 12:37 am EST

Fuck off ALl of YOU…. Jonathan Davis is the Shit korn has fallen but jonathan can still fucken write

Saint Of Sinners | 1/8/2009, 6:58 am EST

I agree korn is thus far ass end sucky but jonathan davis can still churn out good music….i fucking know he can

Des | 1/26/2009, 10:44 pm EST

Jonathan is very talented and none of you can deny without him our music wouldnt be the same yeah there newer stuff isnt as great but Jon sobered up he is happy thats what happens when your not depressed your angry music is a bit hard to make. Jonathan has my support and i will most def go to ozzfest just for him!

Del | 5/6/2009, 3:01 pm EST

I went to my first Korn concert just last week. I have been a huge fan since I was a little kid, and their show totally rocked my socks! Korn is the shit regardless of what anyone has to say. I think that everyone that is running their mouths talking about how shitty of a band Korn is needs the shut their mouths. You don’t have the balls to do anything even remotely close to what Korn and JD have done.

Nokturna | 5/25/2009, 6:25 am EST

…..And again i say.. blah blah blah!! Everyone needs to realize that we all have different opinions. Not everyone is gonna agree nor like the same shit. And really, it does not matter. lol So people who like korn, as I do, don’t let the people who don’t, bother you to the point of arguing. lol I

Raivyne | 10/25/2009, 2:18 pm EST

I love Korn, and I always will, but lets face it: they suck now. After 1999, their albums have been lackluster to say the least. I hated the direction they took for See You On The Other Side. The Matrix? Are you serious?! They produced Avril Lavigne’s music……..what do you expect?! I know they wanted to try something new, but come on, they dont even sound like themselves now! They were out waaay before SLipknot and these other 90s metal bands, and yet Slipknot had an number one album last year! Whats not clicking up there you guys?! But I will always support Jon in whatever he does. If he makes an album like Queen of the Damned again, I would most certainly buy it. That was some of his beat work to date! So keep it up Jon, and dont make anymore Lil Wayne remakes! (lol)
