This Week’s New Reviews, Starring The Jonas Brothers

8/12/08, 1:08 pm EST

This week’s batch of new Rolling Stone reviews is online, and it is headlined by the high-profile release of RS cover boys the Jonas BrothersA Little Bit Longer. Of the teen dreams’ new album, Jody Rosen writes, “The boys’ fantastic third album is steeped in the fuzzed-up guitars, three-part harmonies and cotton-candy choruses of Big Star and Cheap Trick. Power-pop die-hards awaiting the genre’s commercial saviors must reckon with the fact that the messiahs have arrived…and they’re a Disney boy band.” Click below for the full review, plus check out reviews for new records from Loudon Wainwright III and Irma Thomas.

Review: The Jonas Brothers’ A Little Bit Longer (4 stars)

Review: Loudon Wainwright III’s Recovery (3.5 stars)

Review: Irma Thomas’ Simply Grand (3.5 stars)

I think that although the Jonas Brothers are seen as “teeny boppers” to some, they appeal to an older audience than are not made up of 6-15 year old girls. Their songs are fun to rock out to and lift up your spirits whenever you’re in a bad mood or having an off day. Their songs have meaning to them like “A Little Bit Longer” that was about Nick’s diabetes. They have written their own songs from the beginning and still do. They do not sing songs written by other people and are handed to them that have no real meaning to them. Their songs are not generic/controlled Disney Channel music. They have stayed true to themselves and have changed, but only for the better. Every band starts from somewhere, and their parents have not given them whatever they wanted. They have worked hard to be where they are and have continuously stated that music is their passion, they could not imagine doing anything else, and have stated that their parents keep them in check and humble by telling them to “Live like you’re at the bottom, even if you’re on top.” Parents are the 30+ audience who enjoy a band that their children can listen to that has appropriate material and are able to take them to a fun and entertaining concert. And so what if a girl reviewed the CD and gave them 4 stars for Rolling Stones? Is every critic in this world all female? No. Other critics have given them 3-4 stars. I think that the CD is amazing and shows their growth as a band.

I’ve been a rolling stone subscriber for about 5 years. You guys should stay away from jonas, miley cyrus, etc…. I know these people make money, but it’s because parents give their kids whatever they want. I would be ashamed to give this band 4 stars., though a girl did review them.

Jughead is right on. If you only pointed out just one or two “Disney Teen” artist worth checking out, then your readers (like me, 34 years old) would take seriously. It seems like everyday you are hyping up somebody who is from “High School Musical”, “Hannah Montana”, or “Camp Rock”. Is there some corporate synergy going on?

Do you want to know why readership and revenues are down for the 1st half of 2008 for Rolling Stone? Because RS is alienating their fan base by writing articles about little teeny boppers like the Jonas Brothers. According to an article in the NY Times, RS has a young median age fan base in the early 30s. You think the 30ish readers give a shit about the Jonas Brothers? These guys belong in Tiger Beat and those other kiddie magazines, not Rolling Stone. Who cares about their new CD.
