Exclusive: Lenny Kravitz Tells RS “No Truth to the Story” About Joining Velvet Revolver

8/12/08, 2:39 pm EST

Contrary to internet reports today, Lenny Kravitz is not set to become the new singer of Velvet Revolver. The singer told RollingStone.com, “I know and love the Velvet Revolver guys but there is no truth to the story about me joining their band.” Rumors out of the U.K. claimed that Kravitz was “spotted” in the studio with the now-singer-less Velvet Revolver and suggested that Kravitz has just enough star power to fill the role vacated by Scott Weiland (who pretty much filled the role vacated by Axl Rose). However, Kravitz has been busy touring Europe and hasn’t had any contact with the VR camp. Kravitz is just the latest vocalist to be essentially handed VR’s microphone by the rumor mill, following artists like Sebastian Bach, Spacehog’s Royston Langdon and that guy who won Rock Star: Supernova.

Lenny is better off without them anyways, he’s got a successful solo career going great for him, why would he join a group that cannot keep their own frontman anyways? VR is dead in the water, you best try to settle your differences with Scott, or do the what some of us rock fans want to see. A full-fledged GNR reunion, with Axl. And, not with Matt Sorum, he was never a guns member anyways, get the original lineup back!

R n' R | 8/12/2008, 4:12 pm EST

I don’t know why people get so hung up on why bands that hit it big NEED to stay together. The guys in the ‘original GNR’ were all in bands before that, and now are all other bands after that. That is just part of being a musician. Sometimes the window is there for a certain lineup of artists to hit it big, they do, and then most of them move on if the relationship sours and they aren’t bounded anymore by poverty. Maybe they make-up later or maybe they don’t, whatever makes them happy. Maybe, like Slash, they decide to play with other artists at certain concerts, etc. Appetite days are long gone. Sad to say, but unless a time machine is invented, the DVD will just have to be watched.

boatman | 8/12/2008, 5:58 pm EST

Removing Matt Sorum would clear the way for Axl and Weiland both to return. Maybe singing harmony together. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

Musky | 8/12/2008, 8:52 pm EST

Get rid od Matt and get a different drummer.

Bono | 8/12/2008, 9:43 pm EST

Hello everyone. I know everyone is waiting for my opinion on this Velvet Revolver thing. I just want to say that The Edge is a God. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that he is our Creator’s older, wiser, and just plain sexier brother. In fact, if God and The Edge fought, I’m not say it would be easy, but The Edge would probably win by KO. I would say it would 8-9 rounds maybe. I’m just sayin’. I miss my childhood.

dui | 8/12/2008, 10:06 pm EST

I wanna see who VR does get for a new singer. Scott was not only a great vocalist, but fit right into the band. Good luck finding someone else who’s got the talent and the image in today’s music market.

Anonymous | 8/12/2008, 10:41 pm EST

Oh, Bono… what a charmer.

Justin | 8/12/2008, 10:48 pm EST

But a group with Lenny and Slash playing guitar would be ridiculously awesome. Assuming Lenny can avoid his recent bland-poppy trends. The mix of hard-rock and funk-rock would be insane.

Izzy | 8/13/2008, 12:47 am EST

A GNR Reunion would be cool but Steven Adler is crippled from drug abuse and I don’t know what happened to Izzy Stradlin but I like VR 2 and hope they find a good frontman like Scott Weiland maybe like John Mayer

Nostradamus | 8/13/2008, 2:35 am EST

All signs point to the return of Guns ‘n’ Roses’ original lineup. That’s really the only band left that HASN’T reunited. HA HA HA!

Andrew the English bloke | 8/13/2008, 5:39 am EST

So lets see if i’ve got this right, my pals:- are we suggesting Bono and/or The Edge should join VR? and if so, would they still perform Beautiful Day?

I’d get that guy from Ugly Kid Joe. Admit it, you Miss them too.

LoveLenny | 8/13/2008, 8:02 am EST

Of course Lenny could never be in VR cuz he’s an entity to himself. but damn that would a sick combo!
we can dream, can’t we?

Axl Rose | 8/13/2008, 9:41 am EST

I would be glad to join Velvet Revolver and rename the group Velvet Guns. Then we can release our album Asian Democracy.

Megatron1 | 8/13/2008, 9:43 am EST

Slash& co need to either patch things up with Scott or perhaps try to find a good unkown singer, someone we haven’t seen yet……I do think though there is a better chance that we’ll see a GNR reunion before Axl ever releases Chinese Democracy

gnarls | 8/13/2008, 9:44 am EST

i already told everybody…it is going to be the dude from reo speedwagon!!

HAGAR! | 8/13/2008, 11:51 am EST

HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR HAGAR!!!!!…or Gary Charone
I am sorry if someone already made this joke…

Steve | 8/13/2008, 12:08 pm EST

I predict this: whomever they end up picking will stay for one album only, which will get crappy reviews and therefore decide to leave and that will be the end of VR. Chinese Democracy will then be released to extremely mixed reviews and Axl will realize he’s not the “Rock God” he thought he was. Axl will then reach out to VR and the reunion will take place in 2011, when the world decides that they just don’t care about GNR anymore.

Anonymous | 8/13/2008, 12:26 pm EST

I think they should have one of the Jonas Brothers be the singer…..or maybe one of the Hanson kids. Oh wait, same band. sorry.

AphroditeMF | 8/13/2008, 1:33 pm EST

Not true? Thank Christ for that, Kravitz is the king of lame fake-rock. He would have ruined VR.

howie | 8/13/2008, 2:25 pm EST

perry from jane’s addiction. done.

Tim | 8/13/2008, 3:38 pm EST

Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson, Hanson,
All 3 of them little boogers!

Sherry | 8/13/2008, 4:42 pm EST

I really think this would be the best band for Chris Cornell. Of course, Soundgarden was awesome and the first Audio Slave album was great, but then…..
He needs to rock again!

oh sherry | 8/13/2008, 4:51 pm EST

steve perry…perfect fit

Lenny | 8/13/2008, 5:33 pm EST

Lenny is probably too busy recording his next failure.

coked-up | 8/13/2008, 9:23 pm EST

gn’r will never reunite idiots

Beanolabub | 8/14/2008, 8:30 am EST

They should get Izzy Stradlin or somebody completely left-field like ex-Libertine Carl Barat to be the new singer.

brbjdl2152 | 8/14/2008, 8:39 am EST

VR was a rockin act, too bad it is over as we have known them..Lead singers are out their, why not just find someone who has yet to be egomaniakel!!.Give some one new a chance..I know their are singers out their, just look beyond the usual suspects!!!

sirnykon | 8/14/2008, 8:45 am EST

mike patton

Larry | 8/14/2008, 9:02 am EST

The rumor is that their first choice is Jon Voight and if that falls through then Richard Simmons.

Steve | 8/14/2008, 1:44 pm EST

I still think they should go with K-Fed and revive the whole rap-metal scene. It’s been what, 8 years or so? Yah I think it’s time.

David Archuleta | 8/14/2008, 6:31 pm EST

Lenny Kravitz is one of the biggest most arrogant posers in all of rock and roll…his music is completely contrived and his retarded flaky arrogance is just embarassing.

blackbottom | 8/14/2008, 6:47 pm EST

Kravitz has talent but his lyrics show a cheezy lack of taste.

Derek St. Holmes | 8/14/2008, 9:47 pm EST

If I can work with Ted, Slash should be cake. I still kick Steven Tyler’s ass now more than ever!

Derek

Iris | 8/16/2008, 10:27 am EST

I love David Archuleta’s comment about Lenny Kravitz. So I’m not the only one who thinks he’s a fake. L.K. would have killed VR’s style.
Yeah, and I vote for Axl too, even just for old times sake.

Hugh | 9/10/2008, 12:16 pm EST

mmm…yeah, Kravitz is talented but his music has gotten lame and bland over the years. Kind of just mailing them in. In all seriousness if Cornell doesn’t reform with Soundgarden, than that might be a good fit. Of course to piss off Axle they should find a really good GNR cover band, hire the Lead singer and call themselves “The REAL GNR” and sell out arena’s everywhere. There is your reunion tour everyone.

YBS | 6/17/2009, 5:37 pm EST

I agree with one fellow above. That being Cornell as the new singer. He could easily manage the high pitch parts of the old gnr songs and add an interesting touch to the new VR songs. Axl isn’t easily imitated, if that’s what you want. In my mind only steven tyler, cornell, robert plant and janis joplin is in the same league.
