Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Judas Priest Prove Their Metal Mastery on Long Island

8/11/08, 3:38 pm EST

When two of the singers who most define the genre are in the house, calling a tour featuring Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Motorhead the “Metal Masters Tour” doesn’t have even a hint of hyperbole.

The ashen skies threatened to open at any moment at Long Island’s Jones Beach Theater on Sunday, but even though lightning crackled in the distance during Judas Priest’s night-closing set, the evening remained dry. The band only pulled out one song from this year’s Nostradamus, so the rest of the set was dedicated to the glory days of yore. Apart from the old standbys (”Breaking the Law,” “Metal Gods,” “Hell Bent for Leather”), the deeper cuts provided some of the evening’s finer moments, especially a thunderous rendition of “Dissident Aggressor” and “Hell Patrol,” an unjustly forgotten number from the Painkiller album.

Though the ticket read “Heaven and Hell,” a Ronnie James Dio-fronted Black Sabbath is still Black Sabbath. Guitarist Tony Iommi appeared in great spirits, cracking a huge smile while carving out the jagged solo on “I” (some of those Dehumanizer tracks are a lot better than you may remember). Dio was in fantastic voice, sounding more like one-third of his alleged 66 years, especially on “Children of the Sea” and “Heaven and Hell,” the set’s closing number.

As always, Motorhead was Motorhead, and that’s all it takes. From a breakneck “Going to Brazil” to “Killed By Death” and the unstoppable closing one-two punch of “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill,” Lemmy Kilmister’s gravel throat has retained every bit of its charm, and his band is still top-notch. The only downer of the evening is that the audience skewed so far towards the older side, as kids with heavy metal dreams would be well advised to sign up for an evening of education and learn from the best.

Very disapointing Barf.
On the Black Sabbath-Heven & Hell album, only Dio was a new member. So even if Bill Ward (drummer) has no recollections at all of recording the H&H album because he was too stoned, that makes it 3 original members anyways. Then Vinnie replaced him for the Mob Rules & Dehumanizer albums which made the Dio era. Tony & Geezer are the original founders of Sabbath…ok along with Ozzy and Bill but Sabbath is after all Tony’s baby man. \oo/

I want to correct one common misunderstanding. Sharon Osbourne cannot prevent the band from calling themselves Black Sabbath. They are calling themselves Heaven and Hell to distinguish themselves from the Ozzy era Sabbath. They want fans to know that only Dio era Sabbath songs will be played at the shows. Tony has made this point in several interviews.

Barf, you idiot please go and find a copy of heaven and hell and see what band’s name is on it .

Hey Barf - apparently you weren’t aware that Black Sabbath carried on after 1979, and all four members of the touring Heaven & Hell band recorded under the name Black Sabbath. They do not perform Ozzy era songs for obvious reasons, but maybe not obvious to you.

Great article !!!
Iommi is anchor of Black Sabbath, and kicked out Ozzy in the early 80’s. He did take him back on occasions, and still do,,,,,,,,,,,but Iommi remains the founding member. Of course Sharon’s Osbourne took advantage of some legal stuff to prevent Heaven and Hell from using the pure name, but - that is just technicality. Nice to see Dio singing the songs from heart, and not reading from the monitor like Ozzy…

Great show !
Traveling to Toronto to see them on Wednesday !!!

Heaven and Hell is NOT Sabbath. Geesh! If 2 original members = Sabbath then why don’t you call Ozzy’s Ozzmosis stuff Black Sabbath while you’re at it!

Up on vacation, I saw the opening night of the tour. Your article is dead on and accurately pays homage to 2 of the best singers and bands to ever play that music. Dio, Iommi, Butler & Appice flat out laid it down, as well as Halford, Tipton, Downing & Travis. Lemmy, Philthy Phil & Mikey Dee crunched the ears of every soul in the place. I did notice a fair amount of young lads who took in the show, unlike L.I. Great show, killer tour.
