Weekend Rock List: One Album Wonders

8/8/08, 12:55 pm EST

When we heard Wolfmother split up after a lone album together, we pondered other bands that released a great debut before calling it a day (Andrew Stockdale says his Aussie band will carry on, however). Whether they were a one-off supergroup or just a bunch of folks who couldn’t get along, tell us your favorite One Album Wonders and we’ll tally the votes. Here are some picks:

though most will disagree, I must vote for Weezer–FIRST self-titled “Blue” album…the rest of their output has been rubbish in my opinion.

Can we pretend the Stone Roses never released the awful ‘Second Coming’ and put them on this list? ‘The Stone Roses’ is one of the best albums of all time.

Buckner and Garcia

“Pac-Man Fever”

Everybody remembers the stunning title track, but this opus also included such lost classics as “Do the Donkey Kong”, “Froggy’s Lament” and the awesome “Ode to a Centipede”. Every song included sound effects to the video games. Truly groundbreaking

Hulk Hogan and the Wrestling Boot Band

“Hulk Rules”

An he sure does, as evidenced by this incredible one-off by the one and only legend of wrestling. Hulk displays many styles, whether it be dance on “I Want to Be a Hulkamaniac”, tender balladry on “Hulkster in Heaven”,or hardcore hip-hop on “Beach Patrol” (featuring backup vocals from none other than Jimmy “Mouth of the South” Hart). You know how good this album is? It inspired an answer album called “Be a Man” from Randy “Macho Man” Savage.

Propellerheads – Decksandrumsandrockandroll

Oh, and honorable mention goes to “The Transformed Man” by Willam Shatner. He released it in 1968, and then came out with “Has Been” in 2004, which was a sweet album. But “The Transformed Man” is quite simply a classic. Since he did two albums though, it doesn’t qualify.

Hear ‘n’ Aid, “Stars” Technically, this was a compliation album to fight hunger, released in 1986, with previously released songs from other artists. But the title track was a veritable who’s who of metal “stars”
