While CD sales have plunged, music video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have been massively successful — so now record companies want a bigger piece of the gaming pie. Warner Music Group has begun demanding the makers of music-based video games pay more for song licenses. The company’s chief executive, Edgar Bronfman, compared the clout of Guitar Hero and Rock Band to MTV and the iPod, saying, “The amount being paid to the music industry, even though their games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small.”

As usual, the music industry, like the film industry, has it backward. The record companies and bands should be paying Harmonix and Activision for the privilege of being included in the game, not the other way around. These games have sparked a huge amount of interest by younger listeners in music that they would never hear on Disney Channel. Bands like Aerosmith and GNR recognize this phenomenon … too bad the record label numbnuts only see the short-term bottom line.

Doesn’t bother me at all, Warner will be the only ones suffering from this. I am a fan of a few Warner acts, but maybe other companies will learn from this mistake and not give in to greed.

That’s nice. We can’t run our own industry so let’s try to f up a perfectly fine running industry. Maybe they should have set the price they think they deserved when the first Guitar Hero was released.
