Wolfmother Split, Singer to Recruit New Members

8/7/08, 8:50 am EST

After only one album, Wolfmother have announced via their website that they are splitting up. Initially, keyboardist/bassist Chris Ross left the Australian trio, citing irreconcilable personal and musical differences. Not wanting to simply fill the void and continue on in a changed line up, drummer Myles Heskett followed Ross’ exit. That leaves singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale, who said he would recruit new musicians and continue on as Wolfmother. After touring the world from 2006 to early 2007 on the strength of their self-titled debut, “longstanding frictions within the group” finally came to the forefront, forcing the band to take an extended break to consider its future in late 2007. Earlier this year, the band regrouped to start work on their new album and to “road-test” new material. But after this weekend’s Splendour in the Grass Festival in their native Australia, Ross decided he had had enough. The band said they ask “fans to please understand that in spite of their best efforts over a long period of time, they just could not find a harmonious way to work together and that has lead to the decisions announced today.” In their short history, Wolfmother sold a half-million copies of their self-titled debut album in the U.S., became a Guitar Hero favorite and even won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2007 for “Woman.”

Wolfmother meant so much to me, and now they’ve completley fucked me up with this news. Why would they do this? when they were going soo fucking good, why do this to the fans? fucking baby’s can’t work together but the other 2 can work on something else, which won’t do any good. and after they started working on thier 2nd album too, which is long overdue and now pushed back till ‘09. why do the good die young, solid band, solid album but I won;t be following them anymore, nice while it lasted, RIP wolfy \m/

I got to say I am disappointed, I was a fan

THX-1138, you are an ignurant bitch.

Wolfmother were solid. It would be nice to find stylistically similar players, but chances are this band is done. What’s up with the LZ rip-off crap? I mistook them for the White Stripes once, and I have both bands albums! Too bad I never got to see them live…RIP

Rawkstar | 8/7/2008, 10:15 pm EST

That sucks. I really don’t understand how people can be a part of something so great and successful, and then just decide to call it quits. Option A: Continue on as Wolfmother and be guaranteed become super rich and famous. Option B: Andrew’s a dick head so let’s start a new band. So stupid. Lead singers are almost always cocky jerks. That’s just the way it is. Especially if they are actually good. Do Chris and Myles really think they can find another front man and make it big in their next band? Good luck guys.

I love how folks knock wolfmother as a Zepplin rip-off and ignore the multitude of music that page/plant lifted.
Exact riffs and whole sections of old songs pale in comparison to a band who was influenced by classics but did their own thing.
Even the Simpsons joked about how Zepplin was one of the greatest thieves of music.
Go check it out for yourself. Its on the internet, it must be true.

So funny how everyone calls them Zep rip-offs. When no other band in history has been crucified for being ‘rip-offs’ more than Zep themselves.

facinator | 8/7/2008, 8:59 pm EST

I saw this band in Darwin this year, and Stockdale carried on and postured like the no talent passenger that he is. I’m most interested in what Myles, who is a great drummer, does next.

sy | 8/7/2008, 8:41 pm EST

What will all of the other Zeppelin rip offs think of this news??

bdubs | 8/7/2008, 5:48 pm EST

that is too bad they were pretty good. I havent heard anything about Jet since like 2003.

Cheesecrop | 8/7/2008, 5:47 pm EST

The album they put out was pretty solid. It’s a pity, but hopefully Stockdale can keep it together and run with it for a while. I know i’d like to hear what the other two have up their sleeves as well.

Pendulous | 8/7/2008, 5:37 pm EST

They had an opportunity to show people their true skills after the attention the first album got. Oh well, I think Stockdale was the brains anyway. I guess we’ll find out…

T-Nasty | 8/7/2008, 5:07 pm EST

Shame. They weren’t so bad.

CHET | 8/7/2008, 3:39 pm EST

now if only the ac/dc rip-off JET would die. BAND OF HORSES is totally awesome and substituable (really a word?) for WOLFMOTHER. and they aren’t a led zep rip-off.

madcap laughs | 8/7/2008, 1:35 pm EST

these guys were great live performers, probably the highlight of the first virgin-fest in baltimore.

THX-1138 | 8/7/2008, 1:32 pm EST

Wolfmother- the poor little Led Zeppelin clone/bastard stepchild calls a quits after only one album. Meanwhile, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are still making great albums and are in the middle of redefining the future of the music industry. What a pity indeed.

Oh Well | 8/7/2008, 1:01 pm EST

Now maybe attention can be given to bands like Comets On Fire and Howlin Rain, who sound classic AND original, unlike Wolfmommie, who was just a rip-off for the most part. I’ll admit though, the organ break in Minds Eye was cool, even though Boston did it better the first time…

Oh Boo Hoo! Wolfmother were posers that ripped off classic rock bands. I guess we can finally go back to listening to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and The White Stripes.

kcv | 8/7/2008, 12:12 pm EST

maybe bands burn themselves out w/ the nonstop touring. i can imagine i’d be sick of someone too if i had to be w/ them 24-7!

larry | 8/7/2008, 11:41 am EST

Good!

tom in Vegas | 8/7/2008, 11:11 am EST

This really bummed me out. Wolfmother is the first hard rock band that I really enjoyed in close to two decades.

softie hotpants! | 8/7/2008, 10:48 am EST

darnit! they were good weren’t they? we’ll never know what they would have done had they continued now but hopefully the lead guy can find some dead ringers and be the next hard rock version of tom petty!

What! | 8/7/2008, 10:05 am EST

Wow. This comes as a BIG shock!
Firstly i didnt even know they stopped touring for the debut because of group frictions. I thought it was because they had been touring since 2005 in Australia and then the world and that was enough for that album.

I am seriously f**cked off with this news. Yes we have to respect their decision - but damn. LOL, thanks RS for posting this, made me day! kidding.

I was looking forward to a new album. I just hope two new members dont ruin their sound and image too much.

Jungleland | 8/7/2008, 9:25 am EST

This stinks! Wolfmother is my favorite new band of the last few years (maybe since White Stripes or JET). I hope Andrew can find some great players for version 2.0
