Jay-Z Previews New Oasis-Inspired Track at Kanye West’s MSG Show

8/7/08, 12:15 pm EST

Jay-Z made a special appearance last night at Kanye West’s concert at Madison Square Garden, premiering a Kanye-produced track called “Jockin’ Jay-Z.” The song still seems to be in its embryonic stage, but the track’s subject matter is mapped out by the opening line. “That bloke from Oasis said I couldn’t play guitar, somebody should have told him I’m a fucking rock star,” raps J-Hova before busting into the opening line of “Wonderwall” just like he did at Glastonbury. Oasis’ Noel Gallagher previously cast doubt whether the rapper should be headlining the famed British rock festival. “Jockin’” may only be one verse long now, but Jigga tells the crowd its likely destination is his upcoming Blueprint 3. Check out the track in the surprisingly well-produced video above.

remember this bloke is nearly 40 and he’s banging on about the same thing he was ten years ago its just sad that a middle aged man is prancing about in a baseball cap and baggy jeans at 40 still saying nothing relevant smart money says he’ll still be going it when he’s 50! Look at Noel Gallagher two words progressive genius!

Angie | 8/7/2008, 8:46 pm EST

Enough said.

jimbo blue | 8/7/2008, 11:26 pm EST

he didnt play the guitar he just showed thousands his terrible singing voice

ILUVHATERS | 8/8/2008, 8:30 am EST

Are you guys serious, yall should be smacked with a couple stacks that HOV has. Yea he is 40…still makin hot tracks, beyonce for an arm piece. Dont be hatin cuz your boy band Oasis hasnt been heard of since JAY-Z performed w/ them. Im out

Anonymous | 8/8/2008, 8:44 am EST

Jay-Z does what he wants and still makes millions. Don’t be jealous because he’s the man and you’re not.

versedandvested | 8/8/2008, 11:30 am EST

The best part: Gallagher essentially said that a rap act has no business headlining a rock festival.

wow, that must make him a racist.

I’m sure if Jay Z said that oasis had no business headlining a hip-hop festival that would be fine though, right.

You can’t make this shit up.

Keaton | 8/8/2008, 3:52 pm EST

Jay-z isn’t a rock star! -repeat after me… Him trying to attempt to cover wonderwall was so pathetic. I challenge anyone to say that his preformance at glastonbury was remotely good! Ya great Jayz has the money, the girl and all that shit but jealousy was never the issue. Being a rock star takes far more talent than being a rap star. I think we’ve all heard enough ringtone rap for a lifetime.

kt | 8/8/2008, 6:45 pm EST

Oasis fans are so defensive. You all drank the “Oasis are the next Beatles” kool-aid and we’re crushed when it never happened but that ain’t the point. The point here is swagger. JayZ has it and you know who doesn’t. Jay absorbed Noel’s comments and decided to respond sportingly with an Oasis riff. Clever. As for versedandvested’s remarks, this is a discussion about music and that’s all. Don’t be so quick to play your race card. Not needed.

Dillard | 8/9/2008, 1:12 am EST

Ok…Lets just look at the facts. When is the last time that anyone got excited about an Oasis album? Anyone? Anyone? Who is still relevant? In the past couple of years, Hova has been the president of one of the most successful companys in the biz, married the hottest woman in music, and signed some of the biggest artists in music. What has Noel Gallagher done? Apparently he stopped fighting with his brother long enough to start bitching about something else. I would understand if a band that actually mattered complained about Jay opening the show, but Oasis? Come on guys, it’s 2008. The Wonderwall was torn down a long time ago.

Holly | 8/9/2008, 8:20 am EST

Can’t say Iv’e heard any Jay Z but I have heard some of the new oasis material-is it good ? OH yes!

The next oasis album is something to get very excited about.

K | 8/9/2008, 1:03 pm EST

Dillard…sounds like you think what happens in the pop and rap world of the U.S. is all that matters. Oasis sell out all over the world AND the last time they played MSG in ‘05 it sold out in under an hour….and they are not from the U.S., They are huge worldwide and if the U.S. wants to hear pre recorded pop and rap hits forever….what a waste. Oasis will be here for a tour in the fall and it will sell out everywhere. Have fun with your ringtones.

Mick Jagger | 8/9/2008, 5:59 pm EST

Fuck Jay-Z, he can’t let this fucking thing die… although if i was as unoriginal as him i’d probably not let it go either.

???? | 8/10/2008, 10:16 am EST

Fuck Oasis, Do you Dummies know who Jay-Z is???? He is the R.O.C. Star, and he is the billionaire. He made classics, and sold millions of records, way more then oasis. Jay is a rap legend. He’s still 40 and he still makes hit records. Not only that but all his albums has been well received by critics, and who the fuck is oasis???? They probably just wanted to insult Jay to get recognition. Nobody ever heard of them until jay stepped on their stage. Buy a Jay-Z classic and listen, and if you don’t like it, you simply don’t know good music.

Mrko | 8/10/2008, 10:54 am EST

I’m proud of Jay-Z because Noel Gallagher has to realise that we can no longer segregate musical genres and festivals in this day & age. Everything in this world can nom loonger be confined to barriers and fences.

So yes thumbs up to Jay-Z for defending Hip Hop and cememting it’s rightfull place on the mainstage at the biggest and best festival in the world, Glastonbury.

Peace

I’m sure most here in this forum love music, as I do. Don’t know what the beef is between Shawn and Oasis, But, Shawn is not a Rock Star, Period.

See, the definition of a Rock Star is NOT about color, or when it happened, or boundaries, it’s about Musician-ship! Again I know most here love music, BUT that’s all you can do, is listen. I am sure, some here know how to either sing or play an instrument but most, really do not know how to play anything but either the radio or with themselves! again, PERIOD! Look up the definition of Rock Star, and to make it even easier google it….

One more thing, No need to reply to my post, because when ya don’t know, ya don’t know!!!!!!!!!

vick benjamins | 8/24/2008, 12:33 pm EST

who is oasis? The only british band that should be saying anything should be coldplay and guess what? coldplay even did a track or 2 with Hov one and only jigga

Badda | 8/25/2008, 2:33 am EST

1. You idiots who think Jay-Z’s “singing” was intended as anything more than the backslap to Oasis that it was are only showing that you don’t get it and are severely out of touch.
2. Sales, fans, longevity, relevance, lyrical proficiency… pick your playing field. In an Oasis vs. Jay-Z showdown, Jay trumps the lot of them.
3. Okay, Oasis plays instruments. That’s pretty damned remarkable. Never heard of anyone being able to do that before. That must instantly make you more talented than… oh, say… the dude who’s lyrical craftsmanship far outweighs, outsells, reaches more ears, and coincidentally makes more sense than yours – and all without stealing his style from… oh, say the Beatles or somebody. I got it. “Hey hey, my my. Rock and roll will never die” Well, fuck me that’s genius right there!
4. Saying a rap act has no business at a rock festival on its own isn’t racist. However, when that same festival has showcased several artists who owe their sound and/or existence to hip-hop (Moby, Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers), others who couldn’t in a million years be categorized as “rock” (Jimmy Cliff???), or actual hip-hop acts that white people find less threatening and therefore acceptable (Black Eyed Peas)… well THEN you start to scratch your head and say “HMMM”!
5. Hello? “Rock Star”? “ROC Star”? None of you anti Jay-Z musical geniuses grasped that the man was saying he’s a “ROC” star? Did I mention already that you might be out of touch?

what | 9/4/2008, 4:32 pm EST

I think once jay z can play an instrument and write a song then he can talk until then he shouldnt be knocking a band that earned there way in to the music industry he will never be an artist just a entertainer and is not even on the same level as oasis

L.G. | 9/9/2008, 6:13 am EST

Oasis >>>> jay z

period.

Name | 9/27/2008, 7:39 am EST

Rhyming guitar with rock star… My, that’s almost Oasis-standard.

Waskar | 10/3/2008, 2:58 pm EST

K Oasis sold out in under an hour? wow. Jay-z sold out MSG in 18 minutes. But thats neither here nor there. I don’t understand what the issue is. If your problem is with hip-hop/rap as a whole, then i can see why you’d be upset with jay-z. But if you want to talk about longevity and popularty ask yourself this: why was he chosen to headline at Glastonbury? I assure you, its not because he is unknown by any stretch of the imagineation. If your problem is regarding talent…then thats another issue on its own. Your right, jay-z doesn’t play an instrument. He raps. His lyrics range from the petty every day life to deep, introspective raps regarding life. You don’t want to acknowledge him as a “R.O.C.” star, then your issue has to be with him personally. Oasis is known by those who follow rock. Jay-z is known by those who follow any genre of music.

You see where i’m getting at? Like him or not, he deserves/commands respect from everyone for the work he has done, the trends he has started, the albums he has sold, the positive direction he took Def Jam as their president, the successful founding of the 40/40 club globally, succesful clothing line and strategic partnerships with with companies ranging from GM to the Red Cross. What has Oasis done? I don’t bring this up to knock Oasis…rather to put into perspective Jay-z’s career and achievements.

Factchecker | 10/8/2008, 6:50 pm EST

where are you guys getting the Jay Z has sold more records than Oasis? According to Wikipedia they have both sold 50 million worldwide. Actually I think Oasis has sold quite a bit more than that.

Every Oasis record goes #1 in selected countries around the world, they will be able sellout stadiums in parts of the world when they are 65 if they so choose, Jay Z will not. Oasis songs stand the test of time….Jay Z lol

Madferit | 10/23/2008, 7:11 am EST

sorry men u can’t compare Rock n Roll with Hip Hop/ rap.. different class.

jay z needs to fuck off | 2/1/2009, 10:39 pm EST

jay is camel faced retard. hip hop is dead. you want proof? why are these dicks collaborating with rock peeps? biggest albums of the last few years have all been rock.

Liam gallagher will fuck jay z up, he’s a dickhead.

Rachel | 2/1/2009, 10:49 pm EST

You all really need to calm down…he means Rock Star as in…successful…I LOVE Oasis but that guy was out of line to criticize Jay-Z’s work when although he may not be as successful as his band he is not giving credit where credit is due….i mean how many platinum albums do you a$$holes have

Matt UK | 2/20/2009, 1:30 pm EST

This is the truth –
Jay-Z opened his set at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival with a cover of Oasis’ classic “Wonderwall.” When Gallagher was asked about the incident he replied “The way it’s played itself out is that I said Jay-Z had no right to play Glastonbury, which is a crock of horseshit (he means not true). I got off a plane and someone asked me about the fact that Glastonbury hadn’t sold out for the first time in years, and if it was because of Jay-Z. From there it grew into this crap that I was standing on an orange crate at Speakers’ Corner saying, ‘Gather round, brothers and sisters. Have you heard what’s happening at Glastonbury this year?’ I have a certain turn of phrase. So if I say, “Chicken sandwiches in McDonald’s are just plain fucking wrong,” it doesn’t mean I’m attacking all chickens or all sandwiches. I’ve hung out with Jay-Z in Tokyo. I’ve seen his show. It’s not my bag, but it’s all right. We have a mutual friend in Chris Martin. So I am a guy who doesn’t like hip-hop – shock, horror. I don’t dislike rappers or hip-hop or people who like it. I went to the Def Jam tour in Manchester in the ’80s when rap was inspirational. Public Enemy were awesome. But it’s all about status and bling now, and it doesn’t say anything to me.” When Jay Z was asked about Gallagher’s comments he said “I haven’t spoken to him [Gallagher], I heard he was reaching out. I don’t bear any grudge, it’s all good. I just believe in good music and bad music, I’ve always said that. You look at any interview from the beginning of time, I’ve always stated that I don’t believe in the lines and classifications that people put music in so they can easily define it”. When asked who he would be interested in collaborating with in the future, the rapper said, “Anyone. Oasis as well – it doesn’t matter to me.” However he later went on to follow up the controversy by referring to the incident in the track “Jockin’ Jay-Z (Dope Boy Fresh)”: “”That bloke from Oasis said I couldn’t play guitar, someone shoulda told him I’m a fuckin’ roc star.”

Atticus | 4/3/2009, 12:42 pm EST

He’s so dope boy fresh!! F.O. to oasis JAY Z ur the man..

Roger Williams | 6/1/2009, 11:33 am EST

I own recordings from both camps.

When you really think about it, when have you heard someone do a cover version of a rap song (in its entirety)? Does that even happen? Probably as often as The Price Is Right changes hosts…

I like both artists just fine, but the most inspiring thing I’ve heard from Jay-Z is the Grey Album mashup from DJ Danger Mouse.

Gallagher tunes will still be used by other artists fifty years from now.
