Pink Floyd-Themed Cruise Set to Sail in 2009

8/6/08, 12:49 pm EST

Pink Floyd will be the subject of their very own themed cruise, even though no actual Floyd members will board the ship. “The Great Gig in the Sea” (like Dark Side’s “Great Gig in the Sky,” but aquatic) is the brainchild of entertainment company Kiqstart Music and Think Floyd USA, which prides itself on being “the number one touring production of Pink Floyd in the country.” The cover band supposedly opened for Roger Waters and received “personal acclaim” from David Gilmour, so that’s enough cred to charter a Floyd cruise. The Carnival cruise ship will sail from the port of Miami to the Bahamas on May 1st, 2009. Over the course of the three-night ride, fans can expect special shows by Think Floyd USA each night, including a full performance of Dark Side of the Moon. There will also be Pink Floyd trivia, parties, games and “special guests.” Cabin prices start at $379. If you’re a Floyd fan, you’d be as crazy as Syd Barrett to miss it. Check out the details here.

Suena muy bien la idea. Se les fue la mano con la frase de Sid. Quizás descubran el Misterio del Triángulo de las Bermudas, si logran regresar.

It sounds fantastic!!!! If Pink Floyd was going to be there!
I Love the Floyd but I think I’ll pass. Thanx anyway :(

ThinkFloyd is a very good PF band. They are from here in Chicago. The best light & multimedia show I ever saw at a club was them.

Thinkfloyd can’t play at most local clubs anymore, because the clubs’ power capacity cannot handle their equipment. It’s good to see them moving up !

This sounds like a fun cruise but what cruise isn’t fun. Even as a huge Pink Floyd fan, if I were to go on cruise I’d rather go on the “Jam Band” cruise, “Blues Cruise”, “Alt Rock” or “Singer-Songwriter” cruise rather that sail with a cover band…….regardless of how good they are. From what I understand, Think Floyd IS a great cover band. What bothers me most about this article is that the the information is given to us in an extremely sarcastic manner by a writer of Rolling Stone writer with a strange sense of humor: “cover band supposedly opened for”, “personal acclaim”, “crazy as Syd Barrett”. Hey, but what about Pink Floyd wasn’t strange?

MoRtThEspOrt | 9/15/2008, 8:34 pm EST

Sounds PRETTY good !! I’m still a bit cautious though??
Anyways, I’ll bring my 3 foot b*ng.

Jingle Bells | 9/2/2008, 10:37 pm EST

As Crazy as Syd Barrett? A typical comment from a hack publication.

Wonder if they have Bingo on the cruise.

Al Willmott | 8/12/2008, 8:26 am EST

This cruise sounds like fun, but a bit rude to use the phrase “Crazy as Syd”.

This cruise sounds like fun, but a bit rude to use the phrase “Crazy as Syd”.

Joann in london | 8/10/2008, 3:56 am EST

The Syd comment is not cool or funny, just crass.

Would be interestd, but for two things.
1. I live in London, and it’s term time.
2. Some of the freaks at the Aussie Floyd concerts and
Rogers/Gilmour (to a lesser extent)
concerts are not the types to be stuck for several days on a ship. The peace loving hippies from the c1974 are not the majority any more. Headbangers all boozed or out of their heads could be a loud and menacing presence. So although I’d go to the end of the earth to see Floyd together again, and equally would love three days of self indulgent Floyd music, it seems a bit too risky.

djs | 8/8/2008, 10:33 am EST

I don’t know man, I don’t think it would be a good idea to be trapped on that ship miles off shore. Just imaging the kinds of freaks that would show up for that kind of cruise, mix in a little acid, and tunes like “One of these days”, “One of my turns”, and “Careful with that axe, Eugene”, you have a recipe for disaster.

It might make a good horror movie though. How about “Careful with that axe, Eugene” starring Jack Nicholson as Eugene, Robert Englund as the Captain, and Simon Pegg and Scarlett Johanson as the newlyweds?

Syd isn’t dead! He’s sitting right beside me on the couch.

dannypreston | 8/7/2008, 2:52 pm EST

“Shine on Crazy Diamond” is imbued with genuine fondness, whereas “Crazy as Syd Barrett” is mere ill-conceived, thoughtless similie. Think context, timing and phrasing here. Remember, as another passed on great one (George Carlin) said: “You can prick your finger, but you can’t finger your prick.”

Mr. Shine On | 8/7/2008, 12:34 am EST

so… i’m just wondering here… is it now excepted in society to mock the deceased? come on! i truly don’t care what your opinions are on syd barrety, that’s not why i read this article daniel kreps. that being said, i find it remarkable that this article actually made it this far without someone questioning the “crazy as syd” statement. i think you owe some people here an apology.

Tino | 8/6/2008, 10:46 pm EST

“Crazy as Syd Barrett”? NOT COOL, ROLLING STONE. NOT COOL.

Hmmmm | 8/6/2008, 7:26 pm EST

I love cruising. and I love Pink Floyd, but somehow these two just don’t seem to go together, in my opinion.

Also, the only tribute band worthy of mention is the Australian Pink Floyd Show (aka Aussie Floyd).

rob | 8/6/2008, 6:44 pm EST

its interesting how fans of classic rock will spend big money to hear tribute bands.
I believe when all of our “heroes” are too old to play, they will simply endorse a cover band with the originals sharing the concert revenue. I believe KISS is working on such an arrangement now.

Steven Levin | 8/6/2008, 5:33 pm EST

Wow..Kick ass! I am there for sure

Slightly Tacky | 8/6/2008, 3:54 pm EST

RS, Syd Barrett’s dead. Just an FYI.

Skippy | 8/6/2008, 3:18 pm EST

The cruise ship will be sailing into the Bermuda Triangle (as shown in the above picture) - the dark side of the ocean. Passengers will never be seen or heard from again. Welcome my son, welcome to the machine! Where have you been? It’s alright we know where you’ve been… Mooaahhhh!

Scatterbrain | 8/6/2008, 2:45 pm EST

Yeah this sounds like it can be fun. Everyone on board will share a common interest in Floyd. But one thing - Carnival has got to supply some weed or at least some magic brownies to the passengers while in international waters. C’mon how can you have a Pink Floyd theme but no mind altering substances? Then I’d definitely go.

Tom Jenkins | 8/6/2008, 2:28 pm EST

Wow! this sounds like an amazing trip.
