Rage Against the Machine Schedule Show Near Republican Convention

8/5/08, 9:00 am EST

Following their near-riot-inducing performance at this weekend’s Lollapalooza, Rage Against the Machine have scheduled another concert they probably hope has similar results. The band announced that they’ll perform in Minneapolis’ Target Center on September 3rd, which is significant because that’s the same week the Republican National Convention rolls into the Twin City of St. Paul. In 2000, the band played an outdoor show in Los Angeles during the Democratic National Convention, and that show ended with police using tear gas and pepper spray. In the announcement of the Minneapolis show, Rage made no mention of the political overtones their show will carry, but Tom Morello has already revealed he will play a union rally with Steve Earle in St. Paul on September 1st, the first day of the RNC. Protest isn’t free, though: tickets for Rage’s show in Prince’s hometown are $60 and go on sale Saturday.

Excuse me. All that is human must retrograde if it does not advance.
I am from Panama and learning to speak English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “If you have a question about how to do something in tomcat which has not been addressed yet.”

With best wishes :-( , Armando.

IRA Pappy | 10/4/2008, 5:22 pm EST

Hey Kimber, exactly how is bitching and moaning and singing fighting the system you dipshit! Do you honestly think politicians are saying’ “Oh no! Rage is doing another concert so we should change our ways.”? Not a god-damn band on this earth ever even put a dent in the “machine”. Oh, by the way, when you go to the polls you are supporting the “machine”. Your listening to a specific group does not make a problem go away because when the music stops the politics are still there!!!!! I think that right now we have the most corrupt governing body ever but a band will not change that. You compare the “power” of RATM to that of the federal government.Where is RATM’s military? Where is RATM’s corporate allies? You should se the hippie episode of South Park. All the hippies thought they were changing the system, but when the songs and smoke cleared all they accomplished was to get high like lazy jack-asses ad leave behind a mess. Typical of these passive-aggresive pussies. You want to change something? go to town meetings, city councils and so forth. I’m not saying you will always get to far but you have a better chance to make a difference than going to a concert. Get an education you dumbass!!!!!!

matt | 9/4/2008, 5:27 pm EST

How can you people complain about $60? That is nothing compared to what i would pay to see rage. they are truly the most revolutionary and influential band of the last 20 years or ever as far as i am concerned. If you can think of why some other band is more influential then let me know. I dont know of any other band that has taken such a stance and stood up for everything that they say including going as far as getting arrested for it. And for your information they did show up early to give a free concert at the RNC and the republican MF cops shut the power down. just fuel for the fire as far as i am concerned. listen to tom and zacks speech on the megaphone. These are guys who dont just take a stance, they have lived it and researched it father than anyone else has ever done so if you want to make your point heard or you want to argue a point then you better research it. Thats why Rage is so influential and why they mean so much to a lot of people including myself. they make people think on their own and they use their platform as a band to voice meaningful things and sing about such issues that they do. As far as i am concerned they are the only band that sings about all the issues that really matter. they dont just pick one and support it like some bands do. they think globally. One earth, one world, one human race!

still amazing | 9/4/2008, 1:36 pm EST

I dont care what any of these other comments say but I saw them at lollapalooza and last night at the Target center in Minneapolis and both shows were mind blowing. To be honest the 75 bucks was money well spent and think about any other big name band for a concert these days, its that much or more. there was some rioting apparently and 80 people were arrested. what do you expect when you break shit and yell at cops though.

MN Guy | 9/3/2008, 2:46 pm EST

There is a commnet above “because Minnesotans are STUPID enough to elect republican dummies” which may be true in some local elections but MN has voted Dem in every Pres election since 1976(9 of the last 10 in fact).

grapevine | 9/2/2008, 9:16 pm EST

unconfirmed: after being refused admittance to the stage by riot cops, RATM let about 200 chanting protestors on a march towards the RNC. Reports that pepper gas and tasers are being used to suppress the crowd.

EngimaticPoet | 9/2/2008, 8:37 pm EST

Rage Against The Machine 70 dollars in Minneapolis know why because Minnesotans are STUPID enough to elect republican dummies. Rage played free on the Capitol area as well. So people also got that to go to.

grapevine | 9/2/2008, 7:42 pm EST

RATM played a free show at ‘Ripple Effect’ on the MN Capitol Lawn late this afternoon, just across the highways from the RNC in Saint Paul.

Casey | 9/2/2008, 1:16 pm EST

Kill, war, death.

antidisestablishmentarism | 8/31/2008, 12:05 pm EST

In the end, RATM profits, thats what this is all about, free publicity and more money in their already silk lined purses, not the citizens of the U.S. who pay our taxes, who are the laborers who keep industry moving, who don’t insight violence or riots. Whom do RATM purport they are helping? It appears to me their own retirement accounts. Hah!

Joseph Villa | 8/31/2008, 9:33 am EST

Hahaha… Do any of you pay attention??

Here Denver gets a FREE concert.. Might I say again.. FREE and we Minnesotans get what.. Freaking $60.00 + handling fees, which comes to a grand total of about 75 dollars a ticket (I checked on it because I was about to buy tickets.)

Now to me, this is the biggest WTF ever. For a band that’s all about saying “screw” the man, the’re willing to put on a free show for DNC who they’re not really protesting and making minnesotans pay $75 to hear their music and points of view. In my eyes that’s almost like Michael Moore making speaches in Cuba for free but then charging people in a red state to hear his point of view.

It’s their right to charge whoever they want, but if they were REALLY true about their positions of protest they would play it free here too.

$$$ for Rage to protest?!?, Who is capitalizing more?? Saint Paul?.. or Rage against the F&^king machine!!

piece2u | 8/30/2008, 8:40 pm EST

while reading these comments, RAGE seems to be rising in the emotions of people, calm down, enjoy your right to freedom of speech, leave a peaceable gathering with your pride still intact, speak out against WAR DON’T CREATE IT, stand proud, without hatred, without anger, without ruining the life of some innocent bystander who may work at any of the establishments nearby, make love, not war.

Rage against what? | 8/30/2008, 10:36 am EST

these people are nothing but brain dead losers; just like the neocons and ALL the the libs; OB must win to take our country spinning down to the edge of the drain rim; only then will enough losers(”rockers” [which by the way is dead]|”rappers”|country punks)pull their head out of “the sand” and then maybe we can take the USA back
before the world is doomed and the USA is required “ZAP” a chunck of the planet away. RAGE MY ASS.

IowaRepublican | 8/24/2008, 2:35 pm EST

I’m a Republican and while I think Rage Against the Machine can be a bit to collectivist at times, their message of government distrust is solid gold. One should not trust the government to do anything that a man can do himself. It’s to bad that the Republican establishment has forgotten their crusade against the kind of government they now promote. Maybe this will bring it home to them.

Dude Dudelson | 8/10/2008, 6:17 pm EST

The Morello show on Labor Day in St. Paul is being booked as “Tom Morello and Friends”, and is part of a huge labor rally with other acts including Billy Bragg, Atmosphere, Mos Def and Steve Earle.

With RATM playing Minneapolis a few days later, any chance Tom’s “friends” are Zack de la Rocha, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk?

Ron Paul and Rage | 8/9/2008, 5:09 pm EST

I’m going to Ron Paul’s Rally for the Republic on Sept. 2nd at the Target Center and then staying the next night for Rage. What a GREAT HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

fEnDeR | 8/9/2008, 11:50 am EST

I don’t think they have sold out at all, when your concerts end in sh#t being broken all the time, venues and parks aren’t going to let you play a free show. But you want to get the message out, so you bite the bullet and charge 60 bucks. The only way to truly dissolve something is from the inside, so you play the corporate game.

Hey U218 | 8/6/2008, 3:45 pm EST

No one listens? Maybe you didnt read about the crowd that came to see them this past weekend.

Anonymous | 8/6/2008, 3:43 pm EST

“Jason” Rage Against the Machine has not sold out. It is you who have sold out. Your to old to appreciate their music anymore, so fuck off!

Jason | 8/6/2008, 12:13 pm EST

Rage are just a bunch of sell-outs now. They come back to play nothing but corporate sponsored festivals with no new material. They are nothing more than a nostalgia act with nothing new to say or attempts to revitalize what they were in the past. They just collect checks now.

I saw them open Lollapalooza in 93, and this is not the same band anymore, they are just millionaires out to make more money. I loved Rage, and I’m just disgusted by what they have become.

This act is the last straw for me, it’s nothing more than pandering and free advertising for a band whose novelty has worn off on me as an adult.

The Dixie Chicks had more to say and took a bigger stand against the machine than “Rage” ever did.

$60 bucks and service fees for an 80 minute show full of 15 year old songs, and $35 dollar Che’ Guevara t-shirts.

They dont rage against any machine, they are a part of it.

Anonymous | 8/5/2008, 11:32 pm EST

they should play for free in a park like dnc 2000.

Arch Stanton | 8/5/2008, 10:14 pm EST

To The Jam. I love Rage. That’s why I cannot comprehend others who feel their passion and stances BUT like Vedder. So when I see a Rage post I always throw in a snide Vedder remark. Its nothing personnel just utter truth. I saw Pearl Jam open for Nirvana and the Chili Peppers in 92 for a benefit show and you could sense Vedder stumbling in the presence of Cobain and the message he carried. Its quite obscene to think that Vedder is only active today because of Causes. What causes. Whining about Bush. Vedder Mr popular himself stands for absolute zip. When has he actually sttod for anything substancial. With Rage its fighting all power that is not used for purpose. Barack or Bush. Vedder just grabs onto a tree and pretends to have passion. But a set of handcuffs near him and I bet he runs all the way back to the suburb hills he calls home. Long Live Cobain.

Kimber | 8/5/2008, 9:10 pm EST

1. Rage Against the Machine is dope.
They are at least trying to put themselves out there and fight the system. More than most of us whiney-asses can say today.
Power to them.
2. I will argue that Nirvana gave a voice to the lost youth culture of the 90s. Some of their music sounded the same, but I think they were there more for the purpose to be iconic. Hell, I love Kurt, Krist, and Dave.

The Jam | 8/5/2008, 9:07 pm EST

To Arch Stanton-all you ever do is post lies and irrelevant posts. Why don’t you comment on the articles? For you to compare eddie vedder with bush is ludicrous as is the connection of “tree loving morons” to pearl jam. Neither is true. If you knew anything about eddie vedder, you would know that he is NOT a republican and he is NOT a fan of BUsh or his policies. Listen to “BUshleaguer” if you need proof. ALso, i don’t know where you got this notion of pearl jam as being some hippy band. Hippy’s are all about getting high and loving one another without taking any action to make the world better or having any personal accountability. Hippy’s want change but are too lazy initiate a change. Eddie vedder is NOT a hippy! He expresses his opinions without fear of consequence or fan backlash. He’s all about freedom of speech and performs concert fundraisers for causes he believes in(ie: native americans, the homeless, battered woman, abortion rights). I think you need some counseling to get your head straight. Learn about logic and common sense. ANd what’s your infatuation with kurt anyway? Nirvana was a great band but that’s not what this article is about. Yet you end all your posts with “long live cobain”. It’s been 14 years since his suicide, get past it already. Listen to the music if you want but writing “long live cobain” is not going to resurrect him and it’s irrelevant to the article. Is Kurt your god/savior or something? Give it a rest, moron. He’s dead. Now, about this article, Rage Against The Machine is one of the best politically charged bands in rock history. You have to respect a band that writes/records songs for their own benefit. In other words, they’re not afraid to break the rule of never talk about god or politics because it may be offensive to others. They say how they feel and if you don’t like it, don’t buy the record or come to the shows. They’re politically aware, intelligent people, who use their art to make people think about the world that we inhabit and the injustices that we must wage war against. You may not agree with the band, but fact is they stand for freedom of speech. We all must have our voices heard and undo this whole pc era of life where people are afraid to say how they feel out of fear that their views may be misinterpreted or that they may be shunned by sociey at large. Rage and Pearl Jam both take stances against injustice and express their concerns about the world and how to make it better. They just do it in different ways. Rage focuses on politics. PEarl Jam focuses on social injustice but they both are phenomenal bands that speak their mind and create phenomenal art. Long live music that unites people for a common good!!!

RAGERules | 8/5/2008, 6:11 pm EST

“Ralph” when you make statements that are so presumptuous, one usually give facts or an argument behind the comment. So please tell me why these people suck. Don’t just say they suck so ha!

anon | 8/5/2008, 6:07 pm EST

RageRules: cobain died because he killed himself with a shotgun, NOT because he didnt want to use his “fame” money to get his liver fixed. Disclaimer: I mean no disrespect to Kurt because i appreciate his contributions to music.

Ralph | 8/5/2008, 5:42 pm EST

Nice intentions…too bad about the lousy tunes.RATM flat out blow!
While we’re at it, Kurt Cobain sucked and Eddie Vedder is best left to singing over dramatic Who covers

RAGERules | 8/5/2008, 5:19 pm EST

“Swingline” a little harsh. I love Pearl Jam and they are very political and a very respectful band, but Cobain did leave his mark on music so give him that. I don’t think his interest was ever in politics. He did want to quit the addiction for his daughters sake, but his liver problems were so bad and he didn’t want to use the “fame money” to get it cured so he ended up dying. His fault and not smart.

“Arch Stanton” you are just dumb to say that about a band that deserves as much or more credit as Nirvana. They were in the same genre. I don’t even know why i’m commenting on your remark it has nothing to do with RATM.

I would love to be there and protest with Rage. Great band and glad they came back at the right time to get people the fuck* up.

Swingline | 8/5/2008, 4:58 pm EST

Still not sure what Pearl Jam has done to you, or why you’re stroking it to Eddie Vedder’s high school yearbook, but to each their own.

By the way, Cobain was average at best, boosted into some BS iconic status because he squeezed a couple barrels into his dome. He paved no new musical ground, nor did he show an inch of political awareness during his 5 year heroin-soaked moment in the sun, so get over it.

By the way, Tree Loving Republican is like saying a Militant Buddhist Monk. The two don’t go together, never will, no matter how many times we are lucky enough to read Long Dead Cobain.

Moonshine | 8/5/2008, 4:54 pm EST

I agree with Skratch below. You can’t really go wrong with soup.

RAGERules | 8/5/2008, 4:46 pm EST

Rage Against the Machine is one of the greatest bands in the last 25 years. They never sold out and when people were pressuring them to do so they disbanded. You can hate the government and love the country.

walktheline | 8/5/2008, 4:39 pm EST

AJ didn’t you read the article. It costs money to protest there and they have to charge so that they can do this. Also Rage was gone because they lost hope after the debacle of the 2000 election they are back to get our stupid demographic to vote. Hopefully more than 17% of the 18 - 25 vote this time.

Skratch | 8/5/2008, 4:32 pm EST

I like soup!

Arch Stanton | 8/5/2008, 2:46 pm EST

A Republican is a Pearl Jam tree loving moron. Wise up and realize the climate America is in because of Bush. Eddie Vedder, the former high school most likely to succeed, is the same as Bush. A spoiled no nothing waste of space. Long Live Cobain….

Swingline | 8/5/2008, 2:45 pm EST

It just said up there Rage played the DNC in ‘00 and it ended in tear gas and pepper spray. They’re not called Rage Against the Republicans, their gripe is with the whole damn system. Truthfully, if they had a bias AGAINST Republicans, where the hell have they been for the last 8 years?

This is a punk group people, one of the clearest and most defiant voices of the past 20 years, along with PE (good call Conrad). Their job isn’t to heal the world or turn the corrupt into honest.

Sometimes people just want someone to reassure them it’s OK to be skeptical of the world around them, and that’s what Rage, Dylan, Marley and others have provided through the years.

republican | 8/5/2008, 2:27 pm EST

LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISEASE

AJ | 8/5/2008, 1:45 pm EST

So I guess Rage believes that democrats can go no wrong? And 60 dollars a pop? RATM are typical rich, overprivileged, out-of-touch celebrities.
