James Taylor to Release “Covers” Album, Takes on Leonard Cohen, Buddy Holly, Dixie Chicks

8/5/08, 10:50 am EST

James Taylor will release an album of covers, mysteriously titled Covers, on September 30th via Hear Music. Taylor will perform renditions of songs that span several decades, including a pair of Leiber-Stoller tunes (”Hound Dog” and “On Broadway”), Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” and even the Dixie Chicks‘ version of “Some Days You Gotta Dance.” “An album of other peoples’ music is something I’ve been wanting to do for years,” says Taylor. “I’ve enjoyed performing these songs over the years but to record them live in a room with these incredible musicians was just extraordinary.” Taylor and his Band of Legends gathered in a converted Massachusetts barn last January and recorded Covers in ten days. Follow the jump for the rest of the track list.

He’s been doing “covers” from day one – his albums are littered with them. He had a few “hits” with his ‘remakes’ back in the 70’s when redoing an oldie was in vogue. You’d think that after a zillion ‘covers’ of most of the above songs, he’d find more obscure and less predictable material. And then…most of his ‘covers’ are lame anyway. Taylor does much better with his own original material. Nobody can do “Summertime Blues” like EDDIE COCHRAN & it’s still available!

C’mon. If Paul Anka could do Nirvana, why not Smashmouth? All Star is perfect JT material!

Thank you, Sweet Baby James, for still putting out music, even if it’s other people’s songs. What a shame nobody will play this on the radio, except maybe WMVY.

He absolutely butchered Leonard Cohens Suzanne on Leno last night, I could not even bear to watch it.

Haven’t gotten this album yet…yeah, I know I’m behind the ball here. But I’m confident it’ll be great. He has a way of making ‘all old things new again’. Been a fan of his since he hit the big scence in the late 60’s.
