Readers’ Rock List: Final Albums

8/4/08, 3:07 pm EST

Last week, saddened by the sudden breakup of Be Your Own Pet, we asked our readers to tell us their favorite final albums. After counting the votes, the BeatlesAbbey Road — released before but recorded after Let It Be — was the runaway winner, edging swan song albums by Hendrix, Nirvana and many more. And while Velvet Underground’s Loaded and the DoorsL.A. Woman both made the top 10, we had to disqualify them as neither is technically a last album (Both Squeeze and Full Circle sadly count.) For the list of your favorite 15, check below:

1. The Beatles - Abbey Road
2. Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
3. Nirvana - In Utero
4. Sublime - Sublime
5. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
6. Joy Division - Closer
7. Soundgarden - Down on the Upside
8. The Police - Synchronicity
9. Uncle Tupelo - Anodyne
10. Pantera - Reinventing the Steel
11. Tupac Shakur - The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory
12. Bob Marley and the Wailers - Uprising
13. The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come
14. Jeff Buckley - Grace
15. Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water

Often disregarded due to their immature nature and on-stage antics, blink-182’s self-titled album is their best work and a great album to sound off on…

Although I’m still waiting for a reunion… hint, hint.

What?!?! Soup by Blind Melon? Sure they’re back together now, but it was Shannon Hoon’s last album and it’s amazing one at that. Come on guys.

The Final Cut should hardly be celebrated.

Queen’s “Innuendo” should be in there somewhere…

Not to quibble….but LA WOMAN was not the Doors final album. Morrison wasn’t even cold yet when the surviving Doors released OTHER VOICES in October 1971. The following spring they released FULL CIRCLE. After these two flops, they spent the rest of their careers picking the dead bones of The Lizard King.

Hey Steve, Soundgarden’s “Down on the Upside” was indeed a great final album worthy of the top ten. The Zombies? You seem like the type.

You’ll get no argument from me concerning “Abbey Road”.39 years later the album is still a shining testament to the magic of the Beatles, especially when you consider how they took up George Martin’s challenge to make one last great album “like they used to”.Despite the acrimony between the band members, they pulled it off(even if they fell short of working together like they did in past days by writing and recording in the same room, etc). My “last” list would also have to include Cream’s “Goodbye”,Pink Floyd’s “The Final Cut”and The Doors “L.A. Woman”,to name just a few.

All too often credit is given to the flavor of the year and put into categories where they don’t belong. Good to see a list from rolling stone that doesn’t include the white stripes or something comparable

Why include Jeff Buckley? Grace is a debut and shouldn’t count as a “final album”. Just an opinion. But the guy had so much talent! Who knows what he would’ve released had he lived. Grace was only the beginning. It’s a thing of beauty though. That’s for sure.

Somehow I disagree with including albums from people who died really prematurely — does being cut short in one’s prime give a slightly unfair advantage (yes, I see the irony)? It doesn’t reward longevity.

More difficult would be a new list for artists who recorded at least five albums? Either way, that Soundgarden smudge wouldn’t make my list. Otis Redding, Tribe Called Quest, Elliott Smith, Porter Wagoner, The Zombies. CCR juuuust miss it. Free pass for Mardi Gras?
