Metallica Reveal “Death Magnetic” Release Date, Talk New Video

8/4/08, 9:10 am EST

Metallica finally revealed the last piece of the Death Magnetic puzzle, announcing their new Rick Rubin-produced album will be available worldwide on September 12th. While most albums are released in Europe on Monday and the States on Tuesday, Metallica are keeping with the unorthodox nature of this album’s release, giving the world Death Magnetic on a Friday. We assume that Friday will also see the release of the playable Death Magnetic for Guitar Hero III.

Meanwhile, the band spoke to MTV News about the album’s first video, for the track “The Day That Never Comes.” Even though it was shot in California, the video has an Iraq War setting, focusing on a soldier’s internal struggle over whether to shoot a suspicious man. “It’s a story about human beings who don’t know each other, in a particularly tense situation,” drummer Lars Ulrich told MTV News. “It could be a contemporary war setting, but it’s really about forgiveness and redemption and understanding what goes on in people’s minds. We really feel that this was such a beautiful and epic way to treat the song in something that was really radically different than the specificity of the lyrics.” James Hetfield echoed that the video isn’t a political statement but an examination of humanity. No premiere date for the clip has been announced.

GNR and MET | 9/12/2008, 8:52 am EST

Chinese democracy and death magnetic.
whao!
i feel like i’m in the 80’s, and old enough to realize metallica and gnr existed.
Am not hoping them to regenerate the magic of kill ‘em all or ride the lightening or appetite for destruction (*turns the AC on*)as they did in those days, but i will settle for them to shock-me-to-the-core!!!
Honestly, i’m not asking for much.
Please…pretty please….with cherry on top.

ish tri | 9/12/2008, 1:52 am EST

Dave Mustaine | 9/8/2008, 10:53 am EST

Scottyman | 9/3/2008, 9:55 pm EST

And before anyone says it, I KNOW I made typing mistakes! Just becasue I am not the master at having NO TYPO’s dosent mean I can’t spell or I am unintelligent! So stop talking about everyones typo’s like its a bad thing! Your only pissed off becasue you are not intelligent enough to come up with anything better to say!

Scottyman | 9/3/2008, 9:51 pm EST

Dear “spirit of truth”, just to let you know based on what I understand from your post. the blood splatter is on the kill ‘em all album; And the Splatter on the cover of load, well thats no blood. If you think about the name of the album, “LOAD”, thats exactly what the album art depicts!
And to all who want to bash Metallica or rand on how they dont want the CD. DONT BUY THE DAMN CD!!! This is and article about the release of the new album, it would only make sense that only people interested in the album would read the article and comment on it. So if you dont have anything interest or supportive of the release of the album, then refrain for posating anything!!!
And to the stereotypes who think only jobless, long haired, black tee wearing, druggy douch cocks listen to metallica: I am a very well dressed, well cut man making more than 100,000 a year and say NO to drugs! And guess what? I am a HUGE Metallica fan!!!
Aside from all, I am very excited about buying the new album! I do not think anyone who can call themselves a TRUE Metallica can can steal the music! They had every right to be angry witrh fans for stealing their music! Its like if you created something everyone wanted and it was duped and shared with the world with you getting the shit end of the stick in profits! So to that in YOUR PIPE and smoke it!

Die Hard Metallica Fan. | 9/1/2008, 9:38 am EST

Metallica: The Gods of Metal, they have NEVER had a bad album. The First Four were obviously the best(next to fan titled Black Album)(born i 89 so i don’t have the 5.85 EP) The 90’s albums kicked a$$ and when i St. Anger came out I don’t understand why so many people got bent out of shape. Its heavy, some of its fast, and people got bent out of shape because there was no solos! How many of the modern metal bands have solos, Usually its just heavy and rythmic. So, St. Anger KICKED A$$!!!! And the new album is supposed to be reverting to the first four albums, its going to be an awesome comeback for Metallica who lost all the pu$$y fans to St. Anger.

Anonymous | 8/31/2008, 10:56 am EST

After the whole Napster thing, i won’t buy any new album they put out… can’t wait to steal it off the net though! :)

I really hope this album is more like Master of Puppets and And Justice For All, cuz to tell ya the truth, i didnt like St. Anger at all, and im hoping they’re done with that and going back to what they used to be, i can only hope and wait…..

vinee | 8/14/2008, 7:27 pm EST

I can’t wait for it to come out

another GNR + Metallica fan | 8/12/2008, 3:40 pm EST

dear “spirit of truth” I think you need to learn how to spell…but that aside, whatever Metallica and Guns n Roses bring on to the market I will buy the original. I can’t wait. Please Lars and compagny AND Axl Rose and compagny, release the albums!! As peanut says neeeeeeeeeooooooooh !

spirit of truth | 8/11/2008, 2:48 pm EST

Another Peanut Fan | 8/7/2008, 3:54 pm EST

I agree very much with that other peanut fan. I do Hope both bands release their albums this year.

Greetings and all the best to both Guns n roses and mettalica from a simple fan.

Err... | 8/7/2008, 12:55 pm EST

I love Metallica and all but, some of the track titles of the new album (and by some I mean at least nine out of the ten) sound a tad emo, don’t you think? I’ll still buy it and listen to it but the titles are just a bit off. And “The Unforgiven III”? Oh boy…

Peanut Fan | 8/6/2008, 6:34 am EST

Lars and all at the mettalica-camp, as a diehard Guns n Roses Fan I do wish that your album and Axl’s Chinese Democracry will be released on the same day and that both albums will be a huge success for both sides. I am very curious what both albums sound like. I bought UYI 1 and 2 plus the black album in 1991 and I do feel, as just a music lover, that both of them will be great. Don’t listen to the negative Morans!! As Walter (jeff dunham) would say to them:”I don’t give a damn”. Maybe Peanut should ask Axl to speed up the release. Good luck to both Metallica and Guns n Roses!

Mac | 8/6/2008, 12:18 am EST

“1) Get off work for the weekend.

2) Buy new CD.

3) Get drunk.

Sounds like a plan.”

Sounds like I might have to join you.

Corey Haim | 8/5/2008, 10:07 pm EST

hillbilly from arkansas | 8/5/2008, 8:08 pm EST

The only word that you mentioned in your language that I care anything about is the word Metallica. Everything else has been nasty, filthy, vile, perverted!

George | 8/5/2008, 8:00 pm EST

Oh my…

One of my neighbors in Denver is a young Metallica fan. I circled an ad here in Rolling Stone that might interest you, it reads “new Metallica album for sale September 12th”.
Now don’t get all worked up over it! Would you excuse me while I dapple my ears with Death Magnetic?

spirit of truth | 8/5/2008, 7:20 pm EST

the power of metallica is omnipotent and it will work on you real good and i canbe far far away. come sept 12th if you resisting my ass goddamn kiss it

chris | 8/5/2008, 4:36 pm EST

Leave them alone…..

Claypool | 8/5/2008, 3:39 pm EST

I HEARD SOME NEW TRACKS FROM THE ALBUM AND I HAVE TO SAY THE NEW MOTLEY CRUE KICKS ITS ASS. I THINK ME AND ALOT OF PEOPLE WHERE BURNED BY METALLICA WHEN AND I QUOTE LARS” WE USED TO TRADE TAPES WITH OTHER BANDS AND PEOPLE” WELL THEN WHY DID YOU SUE FANS? DID YOU NEED MORE GUCCI WATCHES? NO I WILL NEVER GIVE THEM A DIME AGAIN.

daniel | 8/5/2008, 3:29 pm EST

slayer, testament, anthrax good, metallica bad. dont buy it lars doesnt need gucci watches and oil paintings

Tim | 8/5/2008, 3:01 pm EST

I have heard a few of the songs that have been leaked to the Internet and I proudly say that I will buy it. If Metallica comes to Idaho (please do!!!!), I will be first to buy some tix and rock out with a beer in hand. St. Anger was forgettable but as a whole they are legends.

Simon J | 8/5/2008, 1:02 pm EST

Ya know, the Load records, I didn’t like them when they first came out. Great riffs for sure but it didn’t stick with me. Ten years later I dig those records a lot more. St-Anger is way ahead of its time, that album friggin’ rocks and it’s LOUD. I know I love it.

big FAN! | 8/5/2008, 5:31 am EST

AWSOME i heard the new album is going to be a cross between U2 and ColdPlay with heavier bass and more piano. there is even supposed to be a two folk music tracks played on the harpsichord featuring snoop dogg. completely original and a 180 from earlier albums.

creepingdeath | 8/5/2008, 5:25 am EST

they rock, always have, always will

Bill Bailey Jr | 8/5/2008, 5:23 am EST

Steve L | 8/5/2008, 5:11 am EST

yeah…St Anger had some bad moments, but on the whole it was a reasonably good record. If any other band had released it, it would have been praised as an alt/new metal cross over record.

Lets not make any mistake about that…..if this record has a few good tracks on it, then Metallica are in Rolling Stones territory…thats the fact of the matter, as its all too cool to say I only like tHe records up to And Justice…then why did so many people buy the black album?

Answer: because it crossed over just like their earlier albums….just to wider audience.

Yes they are greedy, but still relevant.

ps: people say ‘let it be’ is the beatles worst album and its still got three of the most played songs on radio on it. I think the same analogy can be applied to metallica’s recent music.

JIM | 8/5/2008, 2:01 am EST

DONT THINK I WILL EVEN BOTHER LISTENING TO IT. I HOPE LARS AND HIS FAMILY STARVE. DOWNLOAD IT DONT BUY IT

Lars U. | 8/5/2008, 12:58 am EST

Thank you for the support. We know who our real fans are. and to those of you that don’t appreciate what weve done in the last 10 yrs go fuck yourself. I would have Cobained myself if we had to keep making the same album all over again for you fuckers. Were good, we have another album coming out, how many have your sorry asses released……………

A gain, to those that love, thanks for the support, buy Death Magnetic, you won’t be disappointed.

Lars.

Patrick | 8/5/2008, 12:33 am EST

I think the guys from Metallica are intelligent writers but trying to analyze them is like staring at a Picasso painting all day long. Save yourself the trouble and enjoy the craziness.

Duke | 8/4/2008, 11:50 pm EST

just because something doesn’t sound the same as the old stuff doesn’t make it suck. I agree Reload blew something fierce but some of the new crap is good stuff, just different. very rare where a band truly duplicates the greatness from it’s early years over and over twenty times. cut em’ some slack and let’s see what they got for us.

Lyrics | 8/4/2008, 9:11 pm EST

Lets face it, its great hetfield had an issue with alcohol and got that problem fixed, but the songs just aren’t lyrically there anymore. i mean c’mon “i’m madly in anger with you! ” hahahahaaaaa

Iron Balls | 8/4/2008, 4:51 pm EST

LOL @ Chumba Wumba

bouee | 8/4/2008, 3:52 pm EST

has anybody heard the new album yet? didn’t think so. just shut up and play it loud on the 12th and then be the judge

Bruce Lee Roy | 8/4/2008, 3:30 pm EST

When did Gallagher join Metallica?

Chumba Wumba | 8/4/2008, 3:28 pm EST

Metallica sucks. Give me Jonas Brothers 24/7.

Jubz | 8/4/2008, 3:10 pm EST

“The Day That Never Comes” is about “forgiveness and redemption” and “understanding what goes on in people’s minds” and (this is the best one folks) “an examination of humanity”.

“Okay… umm… what the fuck does that mean? When did Metallica become a bunch of psychoanalysts and philosophers? Yeah, man, like.. really profound shit there. How about just telling us what’s it’s really about instead of giving us the run-around and making it sound more profound than it really is.”

I suppose you could ask when they “became philosphers”, or, you could try not to be a huge tool and think about some of the themes addressed in previous albums. What do you want them to say exactly? The Justice album dealt with war and corrupt politics, painting detailed images of loss and despair… or, I don’t know… woooah man track after track of tasty heavy metal riffage with completely unimportant lyrical content woooah!

There definitely isn’t any philosophy on Lightning or Puppets either right? Even the mediocre alt/blues/grunge rock albums Load and Reload had tracks with pretty deep themes.

I know it’s hard, but try not to be so ignorant.

a fake fan | 8/4/2008, 3:04 pm EST

I was a big fan of their first 4 albums but now think they suck and have no hope that their new album is going to be any better. I just pretend to be a Metallica fan so people can think I’m cool. But deep inside I know they suck and just go with the flow.

a real fan | 8/4/2008, 1:59 pm EST

metallica is always going to be a great band and not just for the 4 over rated albums they had in the 80’s. stop living in the fucking past and realize that because they keep changing they’re sound and making narrowminded fucks(jonah) turn they’re back on them, is the only reason they arent just another 2nd rate metal band like megadeath. metallica does not give a fuck if you like they’re album dude, they’re finally making music for themselves now. its not just james and lars telling everyone what to do.

Satan | 8/4/2008, 12:43 pm EST

Oh, it looks like Chinese Democracy’s been delayed again until October 3, 2054. Mark your calendars!

Jonah | 8/4/2008, 12:27 pm EST

I for one will not attempt to judge this album before I hear it. Mark my words though, if this album is even half as terrible as St. Anger, I will be the loudest voice urging them to end the suffering of old school Metallica fans and just burn their instruments.

Bill Bailey Jr | 8/4/2008, 11:52 am EST

And the release date for Chinese Democracy is also around that time. 1991 revisited? I do so hope that Axl ROse decides also to release the first part 2-cd of the 3-part albums called Chinese Democracy part 1-2-3 on that day.
Ain’t it fun…..

Rusty | 8/4/2008, 10:37 am EST

I can’t wait to face The Thing That Should Not Be Released.

stupid Rudy | 8/4/2008, 10:27 am EST

um,,,do Metallica fans actually have jobs to “get off” of?

Rudy Pilfer | 8/4/2008, 10:15 am EST

3) Get drunk.
