Coldplay Debut Hype Williams, Anton Corbijn “Viva La Vida” Videos

8/4/08, 10:50 am EST

Always democratic, Coldplay revealed to their fans this weekend not one but two videos for the abridged title track of their new album, “Viva La Vida.” In the Hype Williams-directed video above, Coldplay stick with the motif they showcased in that iTunes commercial you’ve no doubt saw a million times leading up to the album’s release, with each member of the band performing in front of what looks like either computer screensavers, cloud formations or really muddy lava lamps. The “official alternative” video, directed by “Heart-Shaped Box” and Control visionary Anton Corbijn, casts Chris Martin as a king, walking around from landmark to picturesque landmark with a framed copy of Delacroix’s “Liberty Leading the People” (Viva La Vida’s album cover) tucked under his arm. Shot in a film stock that echoes ’70s porn, Martin searches for a place to hang his painting, ultimately finding solace with the rest of Coldplay on what could be the same beach where the band filmed their “Yellow” video. Check out Corbijn’s version after the jump.

Anton, I remember “Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode. Chris Martin, you are no David Gahan.

Looks like it’s partly shot in The Hague, and miniature town Madurodam, Holland

Yes, Just like Depeche Mode’s. However Anton was kinder to Chris and made him carry a painting instead of a beach chair.

depeche mode sucks

“Shot in a film stock that echoes ’70s porn” – I would disagree, alas, I am a sucker for anything Corbijn does and adore his take.

Even more than Depeche Mode, I can’t help but feel a call back to Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour Beatles (especially considering the video for “Violet Hill” too).

Anthon’s version is superior to that hip-hop fuck’s. Corbijn is God.

Corbijn puts substance before looks, proud to be from the same country as him acutalluy. Goddamn those American videos are so commercial, and here in Europe we are starting to do exactly the same. Terrible.

This song doesn’t need a video. It’s annoying just as both of those videos are. I wish they had a video for new song, not one that has been playing on the radio for the past four months.

Am I the only one who prefers Hype Williams’ video? It actually lets the song shine, rather than overshadowing it with too-literal visuals. I think Hype has done an amazing job by departing from his usual vibrantly-colored hip-hop style and giving us something so beautifully subtle and abstract that it really defies description and allows the emotions to lead. The colors are still vibrant, but the video reminds me of the Italian masters; very much like an old canvas, rich in muted reds and blues. Haven’t seen much like this video anywhere. Just like the song, it’s an original.

Someone please agree with me that Coldplay is way overrated. They have good songs and are talented, but the instant hype on anything they do, come on, give me a break.

i think the 2nd video is too cheesy. i like hype williams’ version better even though both are good videos.

Wow the first video trips me out!! and is that a microwave at 3:35?? hahaha, i don’t know.. i’m high?
THe 2nd one is cooler though.

shakespeare | 8/4/2008, 5:39 pm EST

You how I figured out that you are all gay. You folks are blogging about two crappy coldplay videos!

Emily | 8/4/2008, 7:23 pm EST

Anton Corbijn’s version is superior.

if you’re on the lookout for substance, that is. i like it quite well.

G.dog | 8/4/2008, 7:55 pm EST

They are both talented directors but Hype beats Corbijn hands down. Corbijn loses points for ripping off his own Depeche Mode video. He loses more points for not featuring the rest of the band in his clip. It’s COLDPLAY not the Chris Martin solo show. After a minute the Corbijn video gets really redundant. And Hype wins by diverging from his usual cliched style to make a fully realized visually impressive BAND video. And Chris, Dave Gahan just called he wants his king outfit back!!

Martin | 8/5/2008, 6:23 am EST

Ahhh I didn’t get to see Corbijn’s video. Its no longer available

benmont tench | 8/6/2008, 9:49 am EST

2 new coldplay videos? Yawn.
