Rage Against the Machine Return to Riot Atmosphere

8/3/08, 12:40 am EST

“Save that shit for the streets!” declared Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha. He was reprimanding an overly aggressive crowd that forced the band to stop multiple times to restore order amidst the fans (as many as 2,000 gate crashers among them). The delays seemed to throw off the band’s rhythm a bit, though they were still able to play their explosive rap-rock with surgical precision. In fact, they sometimes seemed too focused on execution and not enough on expression. When they did let themselves explore a bit musically — as with the atmospheric interlude during “Bullet in the Head” and the funk grooves dropped into the outro of “Sleep Now in the Fire” — Rage Against the Machine reminded everybody just how good they can be. De La Rocha’s politics haven’t eroded a bit, either: as the set ended, he threatened that if Barack Obama won the White House but didn’t withdraw troops from Iraq, then he’d have a nation of angry, militant youths at his front door. Strong words from a strong band that inspired strong reactions, and as Saturday night’s show proved, sometimes that leads to anarchy.

UPDATE: According to reports, medical personnel treated many people for bruises and dehydration as a result of the Rage Against the Machine show, but there were no serious injuries. Security reports that only two people were forcibly ejected from the festival because of violent behavior during the Rage show.

Zach means well and its great to hear the passion. So sick of Vedder and Co. Speaking politics when the only voice he speaks for are the dirty liberal hippies. The ones who talk without action. Eddie is a tree hugger and makes all democrates look lazy and spoiled. Go Zack Go. Long live Cobain.

B. Real | 8/3/2008, 7:24 am EST

Youths will leave their angry militancy at the concert grounds as long as they have their electronics and Hot Pockets. Zack, please move to Venezuela and get chummy with that blowhard Chavez. Maybe that would worry “the man” enough to get you audited.

John Iurincich | 8/3/2008, 8:14 am EST

Saw Rage at the Entertainment Centre Sydney Australia in 08.’Glad they came to Australia and preformed
The Western World now more then ever needs more politically active and aware bands like Rage.
Keep fighting the power.

Seamus Donnelly | 8/3/2008, 11:32 am EST

Yes that was a truly violent show, but godamn do they still have it

H. Bomb | 8/3/2008, 12:46 pm EST

“2000 gate crashers?” haha… It sounds just like the Battle of Alpine Valley (Wisconsin last August) when I was right on the lawn gate and it literally snapped out of the concrete during the first song (”Testify”) and the whole section behind me went spilling forward like an African soccer match!

And to think: Rolling Stone didn’t put these dudes in the “Band to watch at Lollapalooza” section 2 days ago.

Long live the most energetic band @ Lollapalooza. Beat THAT, Kanye and Radiohead!

Shana | 8/3/2008, 1:21 pm EST

Uhm, what exactly were people expecting? A nice little session where we hold hands and sing campfire songs? It’s in the title folks – RAGE.

And the show was AWESOME.

dude | 8/3/2008, 1:27 pm EST

that was fuckin mayhem

Boris | 8/3/2008, 1:38 pm EST

I hate “drunk tough guy” at concerts. Hell, I hate him at the bar too. Good for Rage for not letting that shit happen.

Arch Stanton: what the hell are you talking about? Eddie Vedder is a MUSICIAN. What else is he supposed to do? Run for president? He believes in something and tells it like it is. So what, good for him. Ass.

umm | 8/3/2008, 1:42 pm EST

translation of a. stanton’s post: “waahhhhhhhhh wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh wahhhhhhhh!!”

ufolover | 8/3/2008, 3:27 pm EST

Hey B. Real. You are probably right most of the time. I think most youths are pretty apathetic to true politics, social activism and especially a little anarchy. But thanks to your prez Bush, I think things are different. Especially since the “blowhard” Chavez has quite a bit of what Georgie wants, the precious black gold. Obama will do the right thing and get us out of your president’s mess, though it will take a while. Thanks for your ignorance conservative loser.

shakespeare | 8/3/2008, 4:07 pm EST

Zack’s supposed angry youth militant’s who would be at his door if we dont with-draw from iraq if obama is elected are going to do what! Hate musicans who think they are going to start a reveloution through music, it cant be done. If you dont like this countrys war or policy move to cuba you hipocrits!

fianna | 8/3/2008, 4:38 pm EST

H Bomb, so a gate snapping out of the concrete, with thousands behind it, is funny is it? As for Rage, well, I always think back to an interview Dylan gave to RS (one of the few decent ones in the last 20 years) , when he was asked about his political stance in his songs. He replied that there wasn’t any , they were just songs, and that people took them the wrong way. I’m always wary of people like Zack , who wave the flag too much.

Arch Stanton is an Idiot. | 8/3/2008, 5:35 pm EST

Pearl Jam are the better band.

So screw politics.

H. Bomb | 8/3/2008, 7:36 pm EST

@fianna

So what? Bob Dylan chose to make songs that straddled the line. Rage is different; they specifically make songs to spark ideas against the status quo of current socio-political affairs.

Tom Morello said it best himself:

“We seduce you in with our sound and expose you to new ideas you’ve never even thought of thinking about… Some people write songs about partying and making love to your girl, we write songs about shooting shoppers on Rodeo Drive!”

Don’t hate Rage just because their ideas discomfort you.

Also, the raucous concert environments at a Rage show are consistent with any hard rock band with likewise energy and overall fire. Unfortunately, most are too drunk/dumb to actually give much thought to the message beneath BUT some people still do!

hkghg | 8/3/2008, 7:39 pm EST

Fuck yeah!
Rage is back!

And who ever compares Rage to Pearl Jam?
Wow dude. Wow.

to Arch | 8/3/2008, 7:40 pm EST

And has EV not succeeded? One could argue selling 60 million records worldwide could be success. What about your boy Kurt? He has really done well in the last 14 years, hasn’t he? Oh yeah, I forgot, he was a heroin junkie and killed himself. Some can gain relevancy like that, huh?

jeff | 8/3/2008, 8:01 pm EST

I was 10th row. It was violent. It rocked. Complaining about a Rage show being violent is like complaining about pot smoke at a Snoop show or a GN’R show running late. What do you expect? It’s what you paid for, kids…

P.S. Uh, Shakespeare, what is a ‘hipocrite’?

dupacrash | 8/3/2008, 10:00 pm EST

i don’t get the return of RATM. they spent the clinton administration running around like leftist guerillas with their heads cut off. then when bush comes in zach de la rocha moves next door to j.d. salinger. the other guys go adult-contemporary with chris cornell. now with bush on the way out and obama knocking on the door their back to shout “EVERYTHING IS BULLSHIT!”?

well... | 8/4/2008, 12:11 am EST

arch: why does it grind your gears that eddie vedder is better then you?

Mak | 8/4/2008, 12:47 pm EST

There is no rage without bruises, they were awesome at Voodoo in New Orleans last year.

mattdiggsit | 8/4/2008, 6:13 pm EST

Dupacrash…. Damn you’re right… Where was Rage when we needed them??

honey | 8/5/2008, 10:46 pm EST

RATM are closet republicans

dirty dan | 8/21/2008, 11:11 am EST

All in all the show was ok… I dont really agree with the shit Zack said about Obama, but the part that bugged me was when he started talking about a Race WAR!Is Zach chillin at charlie manson’s pad or what? WTF?

zilla | 9/5/2008, 1:19 am EST

I think that a big part of the message being sent out is about using the rights that this government is trying so hard to take away. We must try to look past some of the flash of huge crowds and pay attention of the true message.

Nick | 12/20/2008, 9:05 am EST

I’ve been to alot of shows in the last few years. Rage was by far the most memorable. For the first few minutes i couldn’t breath because we were packed so tight. After Zack told everyone to calm the fuck down it got so much better. Serious moshing broke out. i’ve never had a better concert experience and i probably never will. “Fuck you, i won’t do what you tell me!!” Awesome.

ky 131 | 12/21/2008, 8:51 pm EST

My most memorable as well! I was the guy taken out on a backboard just after “killing on the name” with a tib fib open fracture. I Spent the night at mercy hospital and the ride back to Toronto Canada munching on prescribed percosets. Surgery and physio followed. 5 months later I am just able to walk without my cane. That being said there’s only one thing I would do different. Stick my landing! The show was incredible!
