Radiohead Hit the Lights on Night One of Lollapalooza

8/2/08, 12:40 am EST

The first day of Lollapalooza 2008 went out in bright, epic style as Radiohead brought their full slate of visual tricks as well as a healthy collection of songs from throughout their career. The set relied heavily on material from In Rainbows, which sounded heavier and punchier in a live setting (especially “All I Need”). “The National Anthem” was full of menace, while “Fake Plastic Trees” balanced quiet moments with heavy angst. It was all matched up with the incredible light show, which was augmented by an unrelated fireworks display in the distance that kicked in at the end of “The Bends.” By the time the last of the noise of “Idioteque” faded out and the stunning light went dark, Radiohead had cemented themselves as the kings of Lollapalooza — just one more thing they do better than anybody.

I agree Radiohead was totally brilliant, no problem there. But show was marred by all the thousands of jocko cap crowd a-holes who just couldn’t stop talking about their stupid f**king lives THROUGHOUT the set, like it was a frat party and the local cover band was playing in the corner. Next year: ban all such a-holes.

great show, lights complimented the music perfectly and the setlist was excellent. i was worried that thom wouldnt sound good because he was sick which is why they had to cancel the other chicago concert, but on the contrary, his voice was amazing.

I was there and they made me dance in my pants like fire ant implants. Me like York burger!

I wasn’t there but channeled it in my left eye. I can say that my right eye (which I lost in a heated Jart game back in ‘89) would have been jealous if it had not been so abruptly replaced with an over eager toss. I will see them at White River in August in person. Perhaps my right eye will join us in spirit.

I was there. First time I’ve ever seen Radiohead live, but a fan for a decade. They played every song off of In Rainbows, and it was excellent. The encore fell flat, however. Dollars and Cents really killed the momentum, and something was wrong with 2+2=5. I thought maybe a speaker blew or Johnny’s guitar hookup was screwed up. Overall, solid concert with great light show.
