Be Your Own Pet Announce Breakup

8/1/08, 2:15 pm EST

Idolator brings us some crappy news this afternoon: Nashville punks Be Your Own Pet have announced their impending breakup on their MySpace page. “We are sad to bring you the news that our upcoming shows in the UK are going to be our last as a band,” they write. “We thank you for all your love and support these past few years — its been a blast but the time has come for the 4 of us to go our separate ways.” The band, led by fiesty singer Jemina Pearl, recently canceled appearances on the Warped tour, saying that six months of non-stop recording and touring was wearing on them. The group — one of Thurston Moore’s first signings to his Ecstatic Peace label — also reportedly dealt with some internal strife, leading to the departure of their original drummer, and was frustrated when their record label opted to excise three songs from their new album Get Awkward because of their dark subject matter. We’ll miss the band’s crazily energetic live performances, nostalgic lyrics and their innate ability to pen songs about films like Robocop and Return of the Living Dead.

Goddamn it. And to think I decided to skip the last show they did where I live. That sucks. They’ll be missed.

question…why would people who obviously have no interest in music be posting on music related news?

R.I.P.- B.Y.O.P.

You gotta be kidding. I’ve heard both the major label records they put out. Get a hold of yourselves. They tried to get different from their debut with GET AWKWARD, but thats exactly what they did. Got awkward. They couldnt really shift styles and expand and thats probably one of the reasons why they broke up. They had good moments on both records, but that doesn’t make a great band. They really won’t stand the test of time. Hey Fatmont, lighten the fuck up, your eyeliner is running. They’ll be plenty of other four-word bands for you to glue onto to get you through.

um, is this a surprise? i loved byop’s 1st album, saw them live, and realized they were just a big joke. teens who got lucky, don’t give a shit, and are moving on with their lives. again, anybody surprised?

Their energy is unbeatable. Jemina is one of the best frontgirls I’ve seen, and a lot of frontgirls suck most of the time. Sad.

Damn….. well this sucks. Why? I mean, WHY?!? maybe get awkward wasn’t as good as their first, but it was no sophomore slump, and both albums rocked. Its also too bad that Black Hole, Becky and Blow Yr Mind were taken off get awkward here in the US. Becky was even better then fire department

This sucks. I LOVE the debut…yeah Get Awkward ain’t as wild & amazing but it’s still pretty good…Long Live Jemina
