My Morning Jacket’s Jim James Talks to Mustache Institute

7/31/08, 11:35 am EST

With the release of Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James made the switch from a full beard to a mustache, inducting him into an exclusive club that features members like John Oates, Freddie Mercury, the Killers‘ Brandon Flowers and the Sgt. Pepper’s-era Beatles. So it was only natural that the American Mustache Institute would want to interview James to discuss his new facial hair look. “I have always been a fan of the wisdom and power of the mustache,” James said. “Having only a mustache is a feeling unlike any other. A feeling of deep pride and sophistication.” James said his father (who “will always rock the ’stache till his dying day”), James Brown and his desire to look like “a top rate T-ball coach” were all inspirations for his new look. James even offers some grooming advice: “I feel every man looks best with his god-given facial hair, as long as it’s not a beard with no mustache. The ’stache must be present at all times.”

It is important to understand that the Book of Jobe says every time a mustache is shaved, an angel in heaven dies and falls to earth. At least, that is what we at the American Mustache Institute tell our students. Regardless, as the executive intern of the American Mustache Institute, we appreciate Jim’s effort to leave the life of a bearded American behind, and turn to the darker, yet more sophisticated side of the Mustached American. Indeed, he is now more powerful than ever before, and he no longer must put up with the “spousal compromise” that is the beard or goatee. God bless Jim, his mustache, and his people.

I agree with Jim, my mustache gives me such a powerful and sophisticated feeling that I can confront and take on the world. It gives me an aura of invincibility and personal freedom that commands the respect of others.

I always knew Jim James was god in human form. I shaved down to my first mustache about 5 years ago, and I felt exactly how he does. Great power and understanding come from the ’stache. When you see a fellow gentleman with a mustache there is always an unspoken bond that takes place. Only people with the ’stache know this feeling.

I actually googled the American Mustache Institute and cannot believe that there is such an organization. Brandon Flowers and Rivers Cuomo, two newly mustachioed singers, look like perverts from the 70’s with their mustaches. At least this Jim James looks decent in his with the beard. Having never grown a mustache myself, I never knew anyone can have such profound feelings about hair growth on their upper lip.
