Jonas Brothers Fans Clamoring for Rolling Stone Cover Declare “Mission Accomplished”

7/31/08, 1:33 pm EST

Music fans are notorious petition starters, and a few months ago the spirit of grassroots activism — or more likely a hormonal explosion of Jonas Brothers love — moved six teens and tweens in Missouri to kick off a campaign to get the wholesome threesome on the cover of Rolling Stone. After written pleas and e-mails were sent, they brought in the big guns — a dance-off on YouTube, of course.

The video, titled “Official Let’s Get JB On Cover of Rolling Stone,” was directed and edited by Lauren Bode, 17 and features Mariah Bode, 11, Kendal Kamman, 10, twins Ashley and Grayson Nickolaison, 10, and Melanie Thorne, 17. Over the course of three days in May, the crew shot and edited the six-minute clip, making sure to insert as many Jonas references as possible. “We tried to make the video as Jonas as we could without going too Jonas, but I don’t think there is …” Thorne explains, before Lauren Bode interrupts, “There is no such thing as too Jonas.”

For the girls, the Jonas phenomenon has meant a lot more than music, videos, concerts and crushes. Thorne and Lauren Bode credit the Jonas Brothers and their music as the foundation for their friendship. The group’s song “When You Look Me in the Eyes” in particular was a source of strength in dealing with the death of a friend. “Getting them on the cover was like thanking them. I would love to go up and actually hug them and thank them, but if they know that we can do this for them, it’s kind of like us giving them the favor back because they did so much for us,” Thorne explains.

Fans of the band have been extremely persistent in making sure their favorite group receives attention. A previous fan campaign (including another YouTube video and over 5,000 e-mails) landed the band on The Oprah Winfrey Show in April. When asked, “Why Rolling Stone?” the girls explain, “Once you get a Rolling Stone cover, you realize that you’ve arrived.” (For the record, the editors of Rolling Stone didn’t actually see the video until after the issue hit newsstands.)

YouTube has played a major role in defining and establishing Jonas Nation’s identity. Searching “Jonas Brothers” on the site yields over 150,000 videos. That’s more than “Bob Dylan,” the “Rolling Stones” and “Billy Joel” combined. “Your Daily Dose of Jonas,” a 16-second clip featuring Nick and Kevin lifting a table and a joke from Joe has almost 3 million views and 29,000 comments in the five months since it was posted.

The Jonases are not the only young Disney act to have embraced YouTube, the fourth most visited Website in the U.S. Miley Cyrus and friend/backup dancer Mandy Jiroux have their own popular YouTube channel, “The Miley and Mandy Show.” A recent episode mocked other Disney girls Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, who also have highly trafficked channels of their own. Cyrus has since apologized.

The Jonas activists have a MySpace fansite with more than 2,000 friends which they constantly update with the latest Jonas news. Thorne is interested in pursuing a career in acting, and hopes to try out for Camp Rock II (auditions are in September). They recently added a blooper reel of deleted scenes, and are considering documenting a trip to Wal-Mart at midnight on August 12th to ensure that they are among the first to purchase A Little Bit Longer, the upcoming Jonas Brothers album: “If it’s anything Jonas or Disney-related, we’re on it.”

Figaro Bentolli | 1/28/2009, 11:12 pm EST

Rolling Stone’s covers are just a joke now.

AP | 11/9/2008, 9:00 am EST

to the person who said the year 3000 lyrics are theirs … they aren’t! they are busteds (who probably didn’t make them up to begin with)

anywho the jb deserved this xD

JGLOVESJB. | 8/21/2008, 4:31 pm EST

i personally think that JB deserved to be on the cover of Rolling Stone because of the fact that they’re amazingly talented, theyre awesome preformers, and they have very strong morals unlike other musicians who just live to party all the time get wasted end up pregnant and dont even care about their lives. unlike JB they know what they want and they’ll do all that they have to, to get it. and to the haters ; by hating on them you’re all just giving them more recognition for what they do. if you dont care about them OR their music thats fine, just dont be stupid enough to waste youre time talking about them, to tell you all the truth i really didnt used to like them, everytime i heard ‘ poor unfortunate souls ‘ i would just make fun of poor Joseph and mock them all , until early 2007 i really started to hear the song more and more often so i really wanted to know more about them, and now im a huge fan of them , MAJOR fan. see what i mean, i gave them a chance and if for any reason you just hate their music, their style or anything about them , maybe you should do what i did and give them a chance , i’ve never met them but with everything i know about them, i feel like i’ve known these guys forever. and its funny because they say “our fans know us better than we know ourselves” so i find that really cool, like how else would they know that ? only because they take their time everyday to greet people waiting for them outside their hotel or just saying hi to them while getting to the venue, theyre truly amazing sweet guys and i love them so much. Us ; the FANS are what keep them going, i’m sure a lot of people can agree with me when i say that we can talk about them all day long and not get tired of them ever , as cheesy as that may sound i dont care because its completely true. JB’s music has help me so much they’re as inspiring as their music. and if you dont decide to give them a chance thats your decision, but do yourselves a favour, and dont go wasting your time commenting on their youtube videos telling them they suck or you hate them, because thats just wasting your time and its utterly pathetic.
as for the girls who made the video, it’s so awesome :D

jb lova | 8/17/2008, 11:41 am EST

heyy haters! get a life. jb is real music. wat are u listening to?? barney? cuz it sure seems like it. i abosultley love them and i am a teenager! they have the greatest music ever. i went to the concert and i saw about a million college girls their. they are passionate about wat they do. so if u hate them so much then leave them alone and shut up. they have more lovers then haters! and i love them ♥

Alex | 8/10/2008, 2:06 pm EST

The only thing this means is that it no longer matters if you’re on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

Gabrielle | 8/6/2008, 11:45 am EST

I love the Jonas Brothers and the show you did. The dance-off rocked!

Lauren | 8/4/2008, 7:56 pm EST

Being a mother of 3 children who LOVE the Jonas Brothers, I think it’s great you put them on the cover. They are all very talented with singing and intruments. (plus I like the music too!) For all the people talking bad about them, please name who you think deserves the cover and then check to see if they write their own music and play an instument. They probably don’t! Many bands that has come out in the past 5 to 10 years don’t write their own music and they have a band behind them. (Not to mention suck!) I say keep rockin Jonas brothers!!!!!!!

Lauren G. | 8/4/2008, 12:27 am EST

I love how all the people bashing the Jonas Brothers don’t use real names they use fake names like taco and annoymous.

Anonymous | 8/3/2008, 3:51 pm EST

Who the F are these guys, why are they on the cover? Thanks alot Rolling Stone! Being on the cover of this magazine should be no longer an honour for a respected artist.

Casey | 8/2/2008, 4:07 pm EST

Melanie is right there way more than a boy band there are my heroes 2! If u guys don’t like them its fine with me but please don’t leave mean comments about how much you dislike them thats really rude! The boys def. deserved this they worked so hard since the begining and yea they started on disney but so what look at them now there everywhere! They are very good guys who help a lot of people with there music! Thank You So Much Melanie and Lauren and Rolling Stone Mag. for making this happen! p.s. i bought 5! lol!

Jessica | 8/2/2008, 2:01 pm EST

Hah, I love how the JB haters/Rolling Stone lovers are all offended by this! It’s actually hilarious.
Keep the insults coming guys because well, we got the cover we wanted. (:
I think that means we win no matter what you say.

The issue was amazing, the video is really cute and creative, and the article is perfection.
Thanks to those girls for making the video and Rolling Stone for putting three very deserving people on its cover. (:

Jonasfan3000 | 8/2/2008, 12:54 pm EST

You guys are hilarious! I think the vid was awesome - Bonus Jonas rocked! LOL! Well done! Jonas Brothers Rule! Whoo! REMIX!

jbfan | 8/2/2008, 12:15 pm EST

OK, people, I have one question for you: If you don’t like the Jonas Brothers, then WHY THE HELL are you reading this article?? In case you didn’t notice, it wasn’t written so that stupid haters like you could go and bash the Jonas Brothers… And by the way, before you try to insult them, get your facts straight. The Jonas Brothers ARE NOT FROM DISNEY! Yes they were in 1 episode of Hannah Montana and yes they were in Camp Rock, but they have been around LONG before Disney decided to put them on TV… Nick and Joe were on Broadway. So for those of you who think they have no talent, it takes A LOT OF TALENT TO BE ON BROADWAY! Nick got a record deal at the age of 12, but they turned it into a group act with all three brothers. They released their first album in 2006, but not many people knew about them ’till Disney channel put S.O.S on TV a year later. So what if that’s one of the reasons they are so popular?? You are all just jealous because you aren’t singing prodigies who were discovered at the age of 6. I doubt half of you haters have actually listened to the Jonas Brothers music enough to realize how talented they really are. Go to YouTube and type in “Jonas Brothers A Little Bit Longer no screaming girls” or something along those lines. That song was written by Nick, a 15 year old, and it brings people to tears. They don’t just write love songs, that song is about his never-ending struggle with diabetes… It’s a really strong and inspirational song. But don’t get me wrong, I don’t care if you like the Jonas Brothers or not, but if you hate them SO MUCH, then why did you even read this article?? I love the Jonas Brothers, and i don’t care what you think of me for that. You have your own tastes in music and so does everyone else. But don’t go so far as to say that our favorite band is not real music, because it is, it just doesn’t appeal to your tastes.

As for the girls who made that video, great job! I was able to spot all the Jonas-jokes!! I think you guys should meet JB for getting them on the cover of Rolling Stone

jbfan! | 8/2/2008, 11:31 am EST

i love the jonas brothers they have real music and they are really sweet guys. o and “tino” if u hate them sooo much then why have u commented like 5 times???

peace, love, jonas!

Chay | 8/2/2008, 8:59 am EST

First of all really cute video.

Second…

The Jonas brothers are an amazing band! But you small minded people trying to piss off their fans won’t ever relize that. You’re all to pathetic to hear anyone else out. I bet you think the Jonas Brothers are just a band used as a gimic by Disney to make millions off of right? Well you’re wrong because I used to think that’s all they were too, but then my friend took me to see them at a show with her. That’s when I saw how truly amazing they are and im not talking looks im talking personality and kindness. They must have had 20 mins to be at the next interview and they sat there in an alley way trying to meet as many fans as they could and it wasnt to keep us happy it was because they knew how long some people had been waiting there for. They love there fans and they dont take us for granted! The Jonas Brothers are way better than anything some Disney imagineer could have come up with. so quit letting disney define them and take a better look at them and their music you’ll hopefully come to see what so many others have. just because their fan base is mostly teenage girls doesnt mean they arnt important in the music world. They are changing it weather you like it or not. Oh and quoting a song they covered as “bad lyrics” just shows how little you know about them. really people if your going to insult a band based on a quick glance at least make sure what your saying is true, because Jonas fans are quick to jump on people when there wrong. why not try these jonas brothers lyrics

a few lines from the song hold on

we dont have time left to regret
it will take more than common sense
so stop your wondering take a stand
cuz theres more to life than just to live one single smile a helping hand its not that hard to be a friend when it falls apart and your feeling lost all your hope is gone dont forget to hold on

I think these are great lyrics. and I know they other millions of Jonas fan will agree with me.

Chay | 8/2/2008, 8:56 am EST

OKay… first of all isnt the point of the Rolling stones magazine to … i dont know… talk about MUSIC!! and arent the JOnas Brothers… A BAND…

Just because they are signed with Disney you idiots dont like them… have any of you heard their music…

IT ROCks…

IF you cant appreciate everyones different taste in music then you are one fucked up person…

NO they are not the Who … or Bob Dylan… okay but why in the world would you want to hear th same shitt over and over again… and im not raggin on the The Who or Bob Dylan… cause i love them both… but this opens up a new type of music for some people…… the jonas Brothers have created their own sound and sold millions of records… and they are all UNDER THE AGE OF 21.. i bet some of you bastards ragging on them are washed up wannnabees that wish that you had had that kind of success when you were their age…

So before you go thrashing someone at least listen to their music… or learn to respect other peoples opinions cause some of you were down right dirty with your fucking comments and thats wrong….

I love the Fact that the Jonas brothers are on the cover they have worked hard for it and they deserve it….. and for all you losers with the nasty comments why the hell are you even looking at this if you hate it so much it jsut proves what jealous bastards you are…

BTW great vid… i hope they get to meet the Jonas brothers…

Kate | 8/1/2008, 9:55 pm EST

This article is such a good idea! The writer did a great job and the video was so cute. Good editing! These girls deserve to meet the Jonas Brothers! Seriously!

Nancy | 8/1/2008, 9:17 pm EST

Hey John Vilanova,

Can you write an article! That was superb! Hope we hear from you again. Rolling Stone Magazine needs more great articles like this. And to the ones that have negative comments, go back to reading a baby book, that’s what all of you sound like!

loveforjimmypage | 8/1/2008, 8:22 pm EST

what??????? more videos than Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, and the Rolling Stones (aka people who actually make real music) combined?????

something is wrong with this generation of music and i’m ashamed to say that i was born into it. listen to something real, girls, or tune in back to disney channel and continue to be brainwashed

Nicole | 8/1/2008, 5:38 pm EST

The article is great! Vilanova write on! Jonas Brothers are amazing and these girlsshould meet the boys for all their hard work!

Ashley | 8/1/2008, 4:41 pm EST

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Jonas Brothers! Its insane what an impact they had being on this cover. I typed in this video on youtube and there are like 100 videos of girls taking trips for finding the magazine, and just there thoughts! They look HOT HOT in this AH! These girls did a great job! Rolling stone you should let them meet JONAS! Great video!

Jordan | 8/1/2008, 2:57 pm EST

For a bunch of kids this video is very well put together. For them to take the time to make this and email RS,they must be determined. I watched the video with my daughter and she pointed out everything Jonas they incorporated. These girls deserve credit, Note to the Jonas Brothers, these girls deserve to meet you guys!

Melanie | 8/1/2008, 2:46 pm EST

I love this article it is VERY well written. I am in the video and I don’t mind that some people do not care for the Jonas Brothers but honestly why are you reading this then? What you are doing is just disrespecting the boys that have helped me through so much in life. So what they started on Disney, but if you ever just sit down and listen to there music and hear the lyrics you will be in shock. Going to a concert of theres will really change your life! Aside from the screaming girls they put on a great show and they feed off the energy of the crowd. Thank you for reading the article but if you don’t like these boys please don’t be negative, even though i have never met them they mean so very much to me they are more then a boy band to me. They are heroes.

kkkaye | 8/1/2008, 9:24 am EST

hey ‘tino’ you tool..

those lyrics that you quotedd..

yeahh thats actually from a COVER that they did of BUSTED’s year 3000..

they didnt wrote that song you fool.

Lee Adams | 7/31/2008, 11:55 pm EST

I don’t understand what the fascination is with pre-pubescent boys. This is like hanson all over again, why are they on the cover. Jonas Brothers do nothing more than make 13 year old girls cry and do not deserve a cover. Although is hate them, this is a very well written article.

Maria | 7/31/2008, 11:46 pm EST

All the jonas haters stop please. Rolling stone should let these girls meet the brothers. also the writer of the story did a great job!

Awesome | 7/31/2008, 10:40 pm EST

Good job on the video. Does anyone know if Melanie Thorne has an agent?

Jb | 7/31/2008, 8:31 pm EST

Boring.

toppledgod | 7/31/2008, 8:25 pm EST

You Rolling Stone haters are just a bunch of elitist snobs who think your musical taste is better than anyone else’s. Not liking the Jonas Brothers (or any other mediocre act) is valid, but why rail against the messenger, whose job it is to report on all things musical?

Tino | 7/31/2008, 7:39 pm EST

The lyrics genius of the Jonas Brothers:

One day when I came home at lunchtime
I heard a funny noise
Went out to the backyard
To find out if it was one of those ratty boys

Listen to some real bands, kids. Rolling Stone ain’t your scene.

spencer | 7/31/2008, 7:15 pm EST

rs, you have GOT to be kidding me. who’s on the next cover, new kids? i’m cancelling my subscription.

Shelby | 7/31/2008, 6:38 pm EST

To all the Jonas Brothers haters why the hell are you commenting on this when you dont even like them.
Get a life

Liz | 7/31/2008, 5:38 pm EST

“Stupid Music I’ve Never Heard Before”

Wow…you sound REALLY BRIGHT, Spark.

Let’s ALL start judging stuff about which we know only the most superficial things and all will be right with the world, eh?

* rolls eyes *

Joe | 7/31/2008, 4:57 pm EST

dude, spark…for somebody who apparently hates the “stupid music I’ve never heard before,” you sure seem to know a lot about the stuff. and nice name by the way, are you related to bolt or flame by chance?

sigh | 7/31/2008, 4:27 pm EST

this is what happens when parents put their money into their 12 year old daughters pockets.

Markets go where the money is. If you breeders out there care so much about stopping this mediocrity, do your part: stop letting your kids buy horrible music.

Spark | 7/31/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Dear Rolling Stone,
Thank you for not putting the Jonas Brothers on the cover instad of Bo Diddley. I hate it when you talk about stupid music I’ve never heard about before. Please tell me what Zak Ephron is up to and what outfits Miley Cyrus will be wearing. Will there be any insider info about the new season of “KimPossible”?
I am looking forward to your coverage of the fall Nick Jr. lineup.

evsanimals | 7/31/2008, 3:56 pm EST

I LOVE the Jonas Brothers! (irony- initials are JB)

great article, video

fan | 7/31/2008, 2:36 pm EST

This is such a great story!!! That’s so crazy!! I saw that YouTube video!! Props to John V.

Joe | 7/31/2008, 2:34 pm EST

Whoever this John Vilanova guy is…right on!

Tino | 7/31/2008, 1:58 pm EST

Rolling Stone, I really don’t know what to do with you. Why are you catering to this teenybopper nonsense? I want info and news on bands with at least SOME artistic integrity, not Disney Channel “my balls haven’t dropped yet” garbage. F YOU.
