On the Charts: Miley Cyrus Debuts at One, NIN Put Up Good Numbers

7/30/08, 11:40 am EST

The Big News: While her ex-boyfriend graces the cover of Rolling Stone, Miley Cyrus made headlines of her own this week by topping the charts, as her Breakout coasted with 372,000 copies sold to Disney Channel devotees. Country band Sugarland’s Love on the Inside grabbed two with 314,000 copies. The Mamma Mia soundtrack had a big week with a sales boost of 84% from the previous week, which was good to grab third over Kid Rock’s still-charging Rock & Roll Jesus and Lil Wayne’s indestructible Tha Carter III. TC3 ended the week less than 2,800 copies away from double platinum status. And Coldplay’s Viva La Vida dropped to six, its first week out of the top five. Most impressive was the performance of Nine Inch NailsThe Slip, which moved 29,000 copies in its first retail week despite having been available for free for months.

Debuts: Zack de la Rocha was on the charts for the first time since 2003, as his project One Day as a Lion’s self-titled debut entered at 28 (not bad for a five song EP). Candlebox’s Into the Sun, the Seattle band’s first album in a decade, debuted at 32 with 14,000 copies sold. Buddy Guy and Skin Deep came in at 68, Dr. Dog’s Fate was at 86 and CSSDonkey strolled onto the charts way down at 189.

Last Week’s Heroes: Maybe Bill O’ Reilly was right when he called Untitleda bomb,” as Nas‘ new album dropped from one last week to eight this week after a 66% sales decrease. John Mellencamp’s Life, Death, Love & Freedom experienced a similar decline, falling from seven to 16. David Banner’s The Greatest Story Ever Told wasn’t that great the second week around, spiraling from eight to 20, while O.A.R.’s All Sides torpedoed from 13 to 50.

I agree, Trent should be on the cover. He has done a lot lately and has done things in the music bussiness that no one has done before. Plus, I haven’t seen him in a cover in the 5 or 6 years that I.ve had my subscription.

Rolling Stone, you embarrass yourself with covershots depicting such tragidies as “The Jonas Brothers.” Stop placating the whims of 13 year olds who’re told what to like by the Disney Channel! I agree with the several previous posts, Trent is the obvious choice for a Cover. He’s done more for music with a single album (”The Slip”) than TJB will ever do in their entire ‘career.’ There never even should have been a debate about this between the editor’s. Then again, Trent probably would have hung up if you did contact him about a cover. Sellouts.

Yeah, I agree with the people that say Trent should be on the cover. I hated the cover of the one I got recently with the ‘jonas brothers’ on it!!! Who cares about them? These posers aren’t REAL musicians. They need to put someone worthy on the front and our god, Trent Reznor, is definately worthy!!!!! Plus, It’s awesome to see people that share some of the same thoughts as me.
By the way, The Slip was awesome!!!! I loved it! Trent is a mastermind! Nine inch Nails will stay on top forever!

(note: if there is another comment from me, sorry i posted another I didn’t see it show up) :)

I agree 100% with these people. You guys need to put Trent on the cover of the next issue, unlike the issue I recieved a few days ago with ‘The Jonas Brothers’ on it. I mean, what the hell is so special about them??? It makes me sick just to look at them! Who cares about these young “pop icons” anyway????
You need to put someone worthy of being on the front cover, and Trent is definately worthy. I don’t know how many people have said this, so I’ll say it again, “Trent is GOD!!!!!” By the way, The Slip is AWESOME!!! NIN is the greatest and it will stay that way!!!

Yeah JJJ! Trent is God! Oh dear Trent Reznor, please forgive me my sins. Bless this land we live on and help bring peace to our peoples. I ask this, to you Trent, my Lord. Amen.

JJJ | 7/31/2008, 9:07 am EST

I’m sorry I meant: Trent is God! :-)

c’mon
everyone needs to get over miley. she is so fake. literally.
i dont think any of her decisions in general are coming from her… its just the business using her to make more money than they already have. and she is throwing her life away for it.

look at the whole magazine thing.. fathers decision much. how wrong is THAT! i mean i aint saying she should just GO AWAY, but to throw your life away at her age. Okay maybe she doesnt need education, she has her whole life set financially, but c’mon, no one can say she has/will have/had a proper childhood and teenage life.

I’m with these guys ….PUT TRENT ON THE COVER!!!!
it’s long overdue.

kier | 7/30/2008, 11:55 pm EST

Bring the picture of Trent back, it’s so much more appealing than the evil spawen of Disney!

Captain Subtext | 7/30/2008, 9:19 pm EST

Disney, stop infecting the airwaves with these faceless hacks. Thank you.

BirdGirl | 7/30/2008, 6:55 pm EST

I think it is time you put Trent on the cover again guys. He has proven that he is still relevant.

But still crap like TJB still get the cover. Come on!

Nate | 7/30/2008, 5:46 pm EST

Go Nails!!! Trent once again proves he’s here to stay!

Please, please, please!!! Never put the Jonas brothers on your cover ever again. They’re horrid!

jeff campbell | 7/30/2008, 2:56 pm EST

The music industry needs some Discipline from Trent Reznor. Nine Inch Nails’ The Slip = Awesome!

makesnoise | 7/30/2008, 2:42 pm EST

I really can’t stand Disney in the music industry. Miley Cyrus i don’t mind so much, she has some real talent, but the Jonas brothers aren’t a real band, they play the stage while the drummer and bassist and other musicians are sitting behind them in the dark. They piss me off beyond any other artist.

Michael | 7/30/2008, 2:41 pm EST

Nas should only release albums in December when he can get the christmas boost in his first week na dbe gauranteed gold, otherwise his career is over.

Jungleland | 7/30/2008, 2:17 pm EST

Sad week for Rock music. Kids album, country, soundtrack, rap, rap,Coldplay.

AC/DC - please save us!

jjj | 7/30/2008, 1:42 pm EST

MILEY = GOD!

Swanaay1 | 7/30/2008, 12:05 pm EST

As Lewis Black puts it, “they’re all nothing but a bunch of pimps and whores.” This makes a fine example.

Swanaay1 | 7/30/2008, 12:04 pm EST

Tell me when more trampy photos of this “angel” are released on the internet. I’m sure Disney loves the money.
