Sirius and XM Finally Merge, Become Sirius XM Radio

7/29/08, 3:13 pm EST

Satellite radio companies Sirius and XM finally completed their merger today, combining their powers to form Sirius XM Radio Inc. The FCC narrowly approved the deal, which was first announced in March 2007, last week following a 3-2 vote for approval. Eventually, Sirius listeners will have access to XM’s Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour and XM listeners will finally get an earful of Sirius’ prized jewel, Howard Stern. The merge is expected to save the new company roughly $400 million and result in around $300 million in earnings. The merger also came with a three-year price cap, meaning the pay rates won’t increase until 2011. A la carte and new programming packages are expected out within a few months, with interoperable receivers due out in roughly nine months. Under the merger, the new company must devote 4% of its channels to educational programming.

This is great news. I was a former XM listener then switched over to Sirius. Satellite is great for listening to new up and coming bands and those indie bands you don’t normally hear on terrestrial radio stations (RS’ own Jenny Eliscu’s show is my fave). There will be a lot of overlap since both companies have the same channel formats (e.g, classic rock, indie, alt rock, punk channels, etc.) but will probably give the listener a greater variety of music and DJ personalities to choose from.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about with competition from terrestrial and now HD Radio. Hopefully, they can get the hybrid receivers out sooner than 9 months by starting the r&d back when this was just a concept. They both need to reduce the number of channels for the sake of higher bit rates because the sound quality currently sucks.

Where is 43 Backspin, I dont like how they changed this without getting input from the customer’s
I’M GETTING RID OF MY SATELLITE..

This morning 11/12/08 12:00 am the switch was made I have noticed the difference in the quality sound.

The X.M Satellite sound was 100% better than Sirius.

And the programming of X.M was wonderfully put together by people who loved what they did compare to this junk here.

It seems like the customers who are paying for this service opinions didn’t matter.

This Sirius thing just sucks!!

Not a dime of mine will I pay for this again.

I could not believe it when I got in my car and ALL my presets where different. If I wanted to listen to main stream music, like everyone else has said, I can do it on FM for free. I find it hard they made this decision without contacting any of the customers. I called to cancel my contract with XM today; they gave me a free month to see if I like it anymore. I might give it a few more weeks, but I already have cd’s and an iPod in the car now.

Wow 100 percent commercial free uncensored. What the hell happened to my backspin (43)

stan martin | 11/16/2008, 8:17 pm EST

I loved listening to Mz Kitti and Leo G on XM 66.I don’t like the change you made for that station. If a don’t see these two back together and uncensored real soon I’ll be cancelling my subcription.

The suits should have done some research before they started removing channels during the merger. I emailed about backspin 43 and got some cut/paste response that didn’t answer my question.

This merger has ruined XM radio! No old-skool hip-hop! combining all the latin stations into one?? Having Mexican Tejano, spanish pop, and Merengue/salsa on the same station is like having Garth Brooks, drowning pool, and britney spears on the same station! these people conducted NO type of research/survey before making these horrible changes! their current hip-hop station should just be called the lil-wayne/50 cent channel!! what a joke!!

RadioFanSince 1937 | 11/30/2008, 7:37 pm EST

My channels are mixed, the sound quality is poor. I’ll stick with them for awhile since I loved my XM Satellite Radio. Hopefully they will get things straightened out before long. XM’s programming was superb. Now—?

Sirius Crap | 12/3/2008, 12:06 pm EST

i waited 45 minutes to canel my sirius! Bought a car with XM. they wanted me to pay an activation fee to stay with the same stupid company. Bandwith quality is bad too.

Mike L. ( NC) | 12/4/2008, 9:56 pm EST

1. No Backspin
2. Al a Carte channels & packages?
3. More$$$
4. Bad programing
5. Less Sports ( Standard)
6. Mo $$$$$$$$, again.
6. It sucks! Until they restore some of the old music channels & make all the programing available for a low flat fee as originally intended, $13 will be going elsewhere, or maybe I could buy 25 shares of SiruisXM stock.

I have just called the corporate office (202-380-4000) to leave a message of my discontent. Channel 83 needs to be reinstated. (I’m sorry, but 7 and 64 do not replace.) Since the merger I hear 1 song an hour that I want to hear. I don’t hear Boogie Nights anymore like I used to…. The whole thing of playing no so happy mood songs is not going to keep me a subscriber. I’m not paying for 2nd rate music, right artist – wrong song, etc. So please lets get on the ball. I will discontinue if they keep playing crap. We need to voice our dissatisfaction and hopefully we will get somewhere. HELP

Elmrfud75 | 3/15/2009, 11:00 am EST

Been a XM subscriber for 3 years and then they merged. I called to cancell but, I was hung up on three times and finally got through to someone who doesn’t have a grasp on the English language. Told them I wanted to cancel and was repeatedly told abou the benefits of staying with them. I was assured that my comments will be passed along to management. I finally told them that Sirius screwed up the best thing about XM, great programming. I was given another year for $70 (half price) So I am keeping it for another year but, will not be renewing my current subscription. Hair Nation is o.k. but, what they did with ch. 150 and 66 sucks. I agree with everyone else…. why pay full price for substandard music and quality.

a potential customer now lost | 3/31/2009, 11:37 pm EST

When I got my 05 pathfinder last December it already came with an xm subscription and I loved every minute of it. I never went back to listening to regular radio and stayed listening to the system. Driving down the highway at night going to work listening to Zoltar brother from another planet was the best but after the merger Zoltar doesn’t come on as much and they changed the system to area mainstream & underground music which in my honest opinion doesn’t play as good music as the system especially during the day. Also many other good channels were axed out. The subscription that came with the vehicle ran out on Sunday and I will not be renewing it the quality of music after the merger sucks donkey balls.
