We’re all entitled to our own taste, but I do get impatient with so-called Dylan fans who never stop whining about his “later work.” Dylan has never failed; Slow Train Coming, Saved, Infidels are masterpieces, not ‘good’ or ‘fair,’ but masterpieces. I will go song for song with anyone.

You whiners out there, tell me which songs are bad or uneven (or are only the CD’s “uneven”?).

Tell-Tale Signs may be a bit pricey but listen to “Huck’s Tune,” “Cross the Green Mountain,” “Red River Shore,” “Can’t Escape from You,” Dreaming of You” and the second version, the piano version of Someday Baby.

BTW, Empire B, Knocked Out Loaded are great: Dark Eyes, Maybe Someday, Brownsville Girl, Under Your Spell - - - what’s the problem?

People whine about Dylan then go on and on about the greatness of Jack White. Nothing against Jack, but come on.

‘Cross the Green Mountain may be Dylan’s finest song ever. Of course, that’s a difficult call when talking about His Bobness.

People put down Dylan’s 80s output for one reason: to validate Ronald Reagan and the yuppie, greed-is-good insanity. They whine about the 80s, then applaud Time Out of Mind as a “comeback,” so they can kiss Bob’s ass but never give up their yuppie fantasy.

Ronald Reagan did not end the Cold War, by the way. Tell me how he did it. You can’t.

Rock ‘n roll ended the Cold War.

Just bought a turntable to play the old vinyl that hasn’t seen the light of day for years. To buy this on vinyl in the UK is £70.Unbelievable!
And these big organisations wonder why people are turning away from the and going on-line instead.
Sheer unadulterated greed.I’ll pass on this one, and torrent it.

Sony really are a disgrace. Not only are they trying to rip me off with that CD, (which I can afford but would rather die than buy), but they also make appalling bad laptops which they charge a fortune to fix and still they don’t run properly.

Avoid both is my advice.

Dylan has a large, niche, fan base that is nostalgic, rich, and a have a little OCD.
They will definitely eat up this overpriced deluxe edition. And if they don’t, I’m sure a lot of people know of at least one person for who this would be the perfect gift. (hint to my friends & family)

I’m glad they’re releasing more stuff from the past, but I want to hear something new. After all, isn’t reinvention what he’s always been about.

Nathan - I hope the deluxe version comes with a calendar

If someone rich wants to send me a CD-R of the 3rd disc my address is…

In an odd way, it was a marriage made in heaven when Sony acquired Columbia. Maybe there were some kind of hard feelings at first, but just look at the track record. Bob has been able to do what he likes — touring and performing, writing books, painting and drawing, and occasionally writing some new songs. Sony has attractively packaged new and old material, making sure that fans have the best possible momentos of Bob’s long and unparalleled career. We are fortunate that he did not succumb to drugs or violence like too many promising artists of his generation. Instead, we get to enjoy the greatest talent commanding the English language since Shakespeare.
Bob: Just keep on keepin’ on !!!

Expensive but it sounds good. Wonder it there are any outtakes from Good As I been To You.
Hang on, There’s an electric version of Blind Willie Mctell???
Since when?

mack the butter knife | 8/11/2008, 3:37 pm EST

Could afford the deluxe set, I guess, but I’m not shelling out for this one, tempting as it is. Shame that the materials don’t seem worth the added cost at all. CDs cost what, cents to make. Pictures cost cents to press and it’s not worth it. A 3cd set with the regular and excellent packaging would have been sufficient.

Bastards. (not mr. Dylan, I’m sure he cared little about this release)

Wade Cottingham | 8/4/2008, 2:26 pm EST

$130 to $160 for 3 CD’s !!! Screams “desperate” but it helps put the nail in the coffin of these obsolete dinosaur companies, to whom I say: Grab the cash while you can, and goodbye to you.

Malcolm | 8/3/2008, 5:44 pm EST

What a rip off
I have been a fan for 40 years and have always paid Bob for the pleasure of listening to his music and always buy cd and vinyl.

This time though, $130 for the 3 cds and $100 for the vinyl and then because I live in the uk, a further $75 to have them sent to me.
I need to learn about bit torrents.

David K. Richard | 8/2/2008, 1:30 am EST

Ah whatever! All I read is the usual moaning and groaning. I’ll buy it for my music library, the rest of you can whine and stick it in your collection of also rans. By the way; for everyone that constantly rags on Street Legal, it’s his third best LP from the 70s behind Blood On The Tracks and Desire. Bob, you keep putting them out and I’ll keep buying them.

bobsboots.com | 8/1/2008, 8:33 pm EST

The major Labels are in trouble. They are facing a brave new world of lower profits, and are looking for creative ways to replace millions of dollars of lost income. Consider Sony selling photos of its artists for $500 a pop! Labels have held control for over 100 years, and now illegal downloads, pirates, file share, etc. is bringing them to their knees. A wise man once said:
Then they’ll raise their hands,
Sayin’ we’ll meet all your demands,
But we’ll shout from the bow “your days are numbered!”
And like Pharaoh’s tribe,
They’ll be drowned in the tide,
And like Goliath, they’ll be conquered.
I don’t know if conquering Goliath is a good thing. I don’t know that it’s not. But, it IS happening.

Not Maggie | 8/1/2008, 7:10 pm EST

I’ve followed Dylan for over forty years, I always prided myself in loving all his music, for the music, and what I made of It. I could probably afford to get any of these sets and would really love to. But there comes a point when enough is enough. Why in the “World Gone Wrong” would Dylan or the record companies try to take advantage of loyal fans. This has to take the cake. Maybe the record companies and their executives want to see “the day that the music died”. The same as has happened to collecting sports cards, comic books, and almost every other collectable you can think of. Saturate the market and get the profits while they can. Dump the companies to those that will split ‘em, merge ‘em, and loose em’ forever. “Things Have Changed”.

bobbyd | 8/1/2008, 3:53 pm EST

Look to Hollow Horn, Scorpio, etc. There are plenty of outlets to get this material and other great material for less than what Sony is charging here.

Zazook | 8/1/2008, 1:39 am EST

Do they really need the repetition? Why not just release a disc of Bob’s answering machine messages if they can’t conjure up a more imaginative set. I would imagine (maybe) Dylan had some input into this.

Since we have to wait a half decade for each installment… it would be nice if they would finally release the “electric” version of “Blind Willie McTell” which is far and away better than the acoustic version and his probably his greatest recording performance {maybe the best recorded performance from anyone) in the last three decades … and maybe some of the New Morning sessions, etc.

Bill | 7/31/2008, 8:47 am EST

SONY should read these comments and make new plans. Make the three CD set for $29 list price. Then add your limited edition holograms, and all the other junk for the museum piece collectors. SONY will get a real rebellion and lose big time over this kind of treatment of music fans. Boycott the whole mess if the original plans proceed.

Geoff | 7/31/2008, 5:32 am EST

Why all the whinging about the $130 set? I hardly seems to have much different stuff on it anyway. Why shouldn’t SONY put something out for the suckers with too much cash. As they say, there’s one born every minute. The rest of us can just quit moaning and buy the very fairly priced 2-CD version.

Chris | 7/31/2008, 3:10 am EST

So, let me get this straight…I’m paying $111 extra and all I get is one CD, one 7″ vinyl single, and a book with PICTURES of singles? To borrow a line from SNL: “Really Sony?…Really?”

No, thanks. I’ll be more than happy to buy the 2-discs and grab the 3rd “bonus” disc from a torrent. God Bless the internet.

Richard Rangel | 7/30/2008, 10:19 pm EST

Three versions of Mississippi? What imagination give me a break. I’m passing on this one $130. That’s two tanks of gas to go to work so I can feed the family. I’ll look for it in the used cd bins a few years down the road.

Tom A. | 7/30/2008, 6:16 pm EST

It’s obvious and extra-rude that they are preying on the dedicated fans who would be most interested in the 3rd CD. So they are hoping a bajillion people will be willing to part with $18 for the 2 CD and whack the hardcore fans for $130 bucks for some photos and 1 CD that costs about $1 to make (if that). It’s Sony though, not Bob. I hate Sony electronics anyway and boycotted them years ago.

r from r | 7/30/2008, 6:09 pm EST

The deluxe edition doesn’t seem to add much over the regular one, and as for how good that one is, the proof will be in the listening. Who knew bootleg series 1-3 would have gems like Blind Willie McTell?

wrecksracer | 7/30/2008, 4:14 pm EST

As much as I like Dylan, I can’t afford this one. I bought all the other Bootleg series editions. Guess I’ll be downloading it for free. Sorry Bob! (I’d be more than happy to buy it at a reasonable price).

BTW | 7/30/2008, 2:23 pm EST

Anyone who thinks the last 20 years is forgettable for Bob Dylan knows nothing about music. Go listen to the 60s “hits” if that’s all you like. But if you don’t recogonize Time Out of Mind as a masterpiece, surrounded by fantastic songs before and more so after, then you’re an idiot!

Zap Bam Boom | 7/30/2008, 1:16 pm EST

Folks,

Just torrent the sucker 2 weeks before it comes out. Then you won’t be bothered with those silly photos. Then, if you are guilty, go to a Dylan show, or buy official merch from his site, or go out an buy a copy of the disc you can afford and give it to you nephew for his birthday.

JasonM | 7/30/2008, 10:47 am EST

Does anyone really care about this release? The best thing you can say about Dylan’s music from this period(the last 20 years) is it’s better than ‘Street Legal’,'Saved’,'Empire Burlesque’ or ‘Knocked Out Loaded’. Otherwise, these are albums you listen to once & barely ever think about. How about a legit release of “Quest” or the ‘Hard Rain’ tv special on dvd?

Lance M. | 7/30/2008, 9:02 am EST

Come on Bob/Sony! Give us a break. Dont get me wrong, I am stoked about the unreleased material, but I think a little more variety would help this particular series of bootlegs a great deal. How about a little more music and fewer pictures. The price point is way off on this one. Bob, for all of the things you have gotten right in your career, you have to realize the “Modern Times” that we live in. Folks cant afford to drop that kind of cabbge when gas is 5 bucks a gallon. Get it together!

Jack Kelleher | 7/30/2008, 8:30 am EST

$130 for a stupid book of single sleeves and an extra cd is outrageous. I hope everyone downloads the songs off the 3rd cd from blog sites, for free. Sony, and Dylan, are money-grubbing hounds. Shame on both of them

Kevin | 7/30/2008, 7:48 am EST

The deluxe set bonus booklet is just photos of 45RPM sleeves. Most of them are worthless graphic art with repeated similar photos. That adds about $5 to the cost at most (free magazines cost more to print). This is a real rip-off. The record corporations still don’t understand why people make CDRs or download? Why doesn’t SONY hire just ONE record collector to advise them. The bonus 45 is a waste, as it will be the exact same mix and mastering as on the CD version, so it won’t really sound better.

Anonymous | 7/29/2008, 11:32 pm EST

guess he’s kind of desperate for money if he wants to rip you off

matt | 7/29/2008, 10:54 pm EST

I was hoping to get the delux edition, but it’s too expensive. I’m a big Dylan fan, but all I really needed were the three CDs, not the photos, which presumably make the set $130 dollars. $130 is a complete rip off. Just the three CDs for maybe $60 dollars would have been a sweet deal, but Sony never gets things right.

j | 7/29/2008, 4:48 pm EST

this collection seems a little thin to me. where are the “under the red sky” outakes? like “wiggle wiggle part 2″

BobbyD | 7/29/2008, 4:37 pm EST

Could the vinyl be priced normally? All the bootleg series so far cost $100+ it seems (brand new!). I know vinyl isn’t that expensive to press. I call BS.

That said, this is a great idea for the next edition. Sounds wonderful!!!!

bcs2h | 7/29/2008, 3:29 pm EST

On bobdylan.com the deluxe edition list price is a cool $130. I’m sure most of that price is the mostly unnecessary photos of singles and other crap. So to get the extra CD of music you have to pay over $100 for stuff you probably don’t care about unless you also like to go through Dylan’s garbage. Thanks Sony.

Nathan | 7/29/2008, 3:22 pm EST

Probably released on Oct.6, since that’s a Tuesday.

Sanchez | 7/29/2008, 1:28 pm EST

Treats.
