Gadget Envy: Monster “Beats By Dr. Dre” Studio Headphones

7/24/08, 2:38 pm EST

What It Is: A pair of truly badass high-powered headphones designed by the man who brought you Doggystyle, 2001 and The Chronic.

Who It’s For: For anybody fed up with the tyranny of iPod earbuds and who want their music huge.

Why It’s Worthy: The Beats by
Dr. Dre headphones fit comfortably and don’t create the same kind of pressure in your ears like many noise-cancelling units do. The sound is crisp and full, making everything sound nuanced and cinematic — especially useful if you’re listening to multilayered hip-hop tracks, king-sized live albums or
Pink Floyd records. They also look hardcore and fold up for easy storage.

Our Only Complaint: The enclosed Monster cables (one standard and one you can pair with your iPhone that has a dongle that lets you switch over to a call) are slightly too short.

Cost/Where to Get It: $349.95 at Best Buy, Apple and Monster (Available tomorrow)

I definitely agree. These headphones are aural nirvana. You’d have to pay upwards of 600 to get a headset of equal magnitude and they definitely will be lacking in the sleek factor that these headphones boast. Worth every penny down to the final tax-surplused cent. You’ve got to hear it to believe it. Go down to your local apple store or virgin records megastore and demo them. I warn you though, once you leave the store and slip those generic ipod headphones back in you’ll consider taking the plunge into deep, DEEP consideration.

Upwards of 600, Kmusic? Which 600 pairs have you listened to, much less owned? Of course they included some of the top offerings from Sennheiser, Grado, AKG, and Beyer, right? I listened to The Beats and they sound ok, but neutral they ain’t. Moreover, there are many outstanding, audiophile-quality headphones around the $350 price point, including the Sennheiser HD600 (or the HD650s for about $75 more), Beyerdynamic DT 880, AKG K701, and Denon AH-D2000. Do some research before you plop down your 350.
