Report: Rick Ross Worked as a Florida Corrections Officer

7/22/08, 11:19 am EST

The Smoking Gun has once again exposed one of hip-hop’s biggest stars, this time revealing that Rick Ross has been lying about his past job of being a corrections officer. Ross has always denied he was ever a C.O., and when a photo of Ross in his officer’s uniform was unearthed, the Miami rapper said “online hackers” put “my face when I was a teenager in high school on other peoples’ body.” Ross then dared someone to find concrete evidence that he was ever a C.O. Well, the Smoking Gun found that evidence. SG unearthed a personnel record showing that Ross served 18 months as a corrections officer at the South Florida Reception Center in Dade County. The rapper’s social security number also matches the digits seen on the personnel record, which shows the rapper’s real name as William L. Roberts. The revelation that Ross worked for the Department of Corrections may have some damaging effects on Ross’ street cred, as the rapper previously bragged that he trafficked cocaine before he “came out of nowhere and just took over the streets.” The Smoking Gun previously exposed Akon as a faux-felon.

UPDATE: Despite the Smoking Gun’s report, Ross continues to deny the corrections officer allegation, responding to the rumors in the form of a freestyle attacking the Internet. Using Snoop Dogg’s “Life of Da Party” beat, Ross raps “Bitch, I’m the boss and I’m laughing at your blogs” and “I’m the glue in the streets, meaning I can get you stuck/ The world knows where the fuck I’m from/ Sell rock, 20 chains and I never lost one …/ Heavy on the block, never on the Net.” No formal, non-freestyled statement from Ross or his reps has been made.

Yo, Ricks a bitch, you know he ain’t never trafficed the white, if he did he wouldn’t be bragging about it. Think about it, he would be snitching on himself right there. If there was any truth in his claim he would be at least on the radar for law enforcement agencies, then let him brag about it, man that dude would be locked up so fast.

THE BOSS is the only guy that lives like a BOSS. So dont say that you dont like his CD or that you will not buy it again. That’s a Child talk. Connection is the only key the BOSS is with it.

I think record labels take legitimate business men like Rick Ross and tell them that they must present themselves as drug dealers to sell. You can tell from the details in Rick Ross’s music that he may have actually cooked up some crack, but you never would have thought he would be a C.O.
Rap is like WWE. You can’t believe all these cats really act that way. Just listen to a Plies Interview. He doesn’t talk like that in interviews. Watch that 40 Glocc video where he’s chasing Lil Wayne and his entourage. All that tough talk is just music.

Don't Believe The Hype | 7/23/2008, 8:29 pm EST

Rap is all about street cred.
Everybody’s A Gangsta with criminal records. And they rap about guns, drugs, women, and jewelry but they never lived the life. RIck Ross isn’t the only fake gangsta rapper. The Rap genre sells tons of “hardcore” cds and songs but it’s just a gimmick to sell records and this is just confirmation of that fact. It should be, rap about what you know and what you lived not fabricate stories or sell your soul to make a buck. People buy into the hype surronding these rappers. For example, mr lollipop man-aka lil wayne says he’s the “best rapper alive” and you all buy his record to see what he’s going to say. WHat does he say-the same as the next man-sexual innuendos, bling bling, rims, women, drugs and the list goes on. Most rappers nowadays don’t make art anymore. They make songs that can be played in clubs, songs about gangs, songs that only boast about how great they think they are. Most rappers don’t make records anymore where you can sit down and really feel what they’re going through or have lyrics that make you think about life and the message that they’re trying to get across. Don’t believe the hype! You want real music-check out Gangstarr-more precisely the voice and lyricist of that rap duo-Guru-Best MC of today and severely overated. These other rappers are too focused on making money than making art that will communicate something other than cars and rims, glorified violence, and degradation of women. Ninety nine percent of Rap and hip hop is unoriginal, uninspired, and will likely be forgetten aside from nostalgia when you hear it on the radio a couple years later. But long live Guru and real hip hop!!!

huh | 7/23/2008, 4:23 pm EST

rick ross i can agree is a fake. but NWA i don’t know so much about that one. eazy-e started his company with drug money and wasnt dre shot or stabbed the same time his brother was killed? or am i making that up? hey, maybe i should be a rapper too.

Joe | 7/22/2008, 5:12 pm EST

I love this stuff. A coworker of mine once told me that NWA were dudes that got their lunch money stolen by real gangsters. I think Ice-T, Schooly D, the BOO YA Tribe, some of these dudes actually have criminal records.

Mikey T | 7/22/2008, 4:27 pm EST

Is this guy really that popular? I mean, damn. We have that ugly tattooed Lil’ Midget making millions and this WWE wannabe. What happened to hip-hop? No wonder The Cool Kids are called “hipster”. It’s because they make fun, good, music. Not drug dealing, pimp, gangsta, I’m from the Hood bullshit!

Ed | 7/22/2008, 3:16 pm EST

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - and he furtha degrades his wannabe cred by lyin’ and denyin’- PUNK!

Spunky | 7/22/2008, 1:53 pm EST

The Smoking Gun failed to come up with some other past history of Rick Ross. He grew up in the streets of Philadelphia, hung out with a group of kids called The Junkyard Gang, was quick to give out wise advice on moral dilemmas and occasionally was heard saying, “Hey, Hey, Hey..!”

WhiteMAN | 7/22/2008, 12:44 pm EST

This guy is studio gangsta. He stole his name from a drug dealer in LA and we are suprised he was a CO. This is some real life CB4 shit! Anybody who has to constantly shout about their street cred ain’t really that gangsta. You take away their entourage and guns, you just got some punk. Thank god Lil wayne made rap fun again.
