Kanye West Gives Back to Iraq War Vets in “Choose or Lose” Special

7/22/08, 9:00 am EST

Kanye West is hooking up with MTV for the new documentary Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming. In the hour-long doc, West and MTV VJ Sway Calloway will go to the homes of recently returned Iraq war veterans to hear their stories about their service and how they’re re-acclimating to civilian life. At each stop, West will present the soldiers with a gift, with the rapper paying their rent, taking care of their debt or funding their tuition. “There are hundreds of veterans out there who are falling through the cracks. They make the ultimate sacrifices for us by laying down their lives, but it seems like a lot of them just get forgotten about” said West. “I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people but you can always do more. I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories.” The Choose or Lose special will air on MTV on Monday, July 28th, at 10PM EST.

The female military veteran on the show is a disgrace to military members and women alike. She was upset to go to war, and said she signed up just to pay for college. She was more than willing to take the money the government gave her, but when her country asked her to do something in return, she was baffled. I have been to Iraq 4 times and Afghanistan twice. I love my country, and if I had to give my life, I would know it was for the greatest nation on earth. It makes me sick to think that people that truly did love their country died on its behalf, and that she got to live. If I saw her, I would have to stop myself from spitting in her face. She makes me sick.

It is better to die for something than to live for nothing…like I’m sure she will.

My finace and I watched this last night, he’s a Marine Vet. He rarely shows emotion and keeps things about the war inside..but while watching this show he teard up and was happy for what you did for these vets….we both think it’s great for someone to reconize what our men & women have gone over there and sacraficed their lives for this country…little do us civilians know that our military come back and dont get the help they need to transistion back into society. Thank you to Kanye for stepping up and helping those vets…GOD BLESS!

Hey, the armed services is a world of it’s own. It is sad to watch men and women alike serve for a greater cause by means of war. Life is most precious but, our souls and eternal destiny awaits us. If Kanye and if he has helped anybody in postive and exceptional ways he deserves help to contiune and also recognition for such. AMERICA!!! Always Faithful

Good for you Kanye! Hopefully the vets have a couple of extra hours to wait for Kanye.

“Don’t vets (at least in Iraq) sing up for war? I don’t get it: who enrolls in the army and doesn’t want to go to war? Why would you choose a job like this if you don’t want war? Don’t they get paid, don’t they get healthcare and benefits and pensions…it is the govt?”

Did you ever think that for some the option of tuition for college is an appealling option to join and for others a family legacy? Whatever the reason, the government has continually reneged on its promises to provide health care and other benefits. It’s gotten to the point where soldiers come home and are virtually ignored. They HAVE TO FIGHT AND PETITION to get what’s owed to them. IT’s DISGRACEFUl!!! ANd The government is unwilling to help soldiers especially the ones that return with post tramatic stress disorder or other mental illnesses. They come home a different person and they’re trying to cope with civilian life again and now they have to fight for the benefits they’re entitled too. It’s a disgrace!!! Wether you’re pro or antiwar, there’s no denying these men/women are heroes. Respect the vets!!! Don’t let them be forgotten!!! Glad Kanye’s doing something but the military and the government should be footing the bill to help these vets. But they’re much to focused on bodies to serve then the ones that already served. It’s a shame. I thought this was AMerica!!! I thought we honored our Heroes. REspect THe Vets!!! That all i’m saying. Their well being should be a top priority. Politicians don’t send their kids to the frontlines so they don’t care about the consequences of war or the toll it takes on our heroes. But we can’t all be “Fortunate Sons”. Respect the VETS!!!!

Kanye West’s effort’s definitely represent something more than wearing a flag pen on your suit!

I was about to make a snarky post about Kanye. Something about showing up hours late, bragging about himself, and complaining about how he was snubbed for every award that he lost out on. I can’t. This is the one time I can say with sincerity: Thank you Kanye for helping out veterns and to shine a spotlight on a situation that the government has clearly dropped the ball on.

Let’s hope the “gift” Kanye presents to the soldiers are not copies of his CD. That’ll probably just exacerbate any post traumatic stress syndrome the soldiers may have.

Miuk you should never depend or even think that the govenment will do any thing for veterans etc.. The federal government in general (under the reign of Bush or not) always seems to fuck it up. But I do agree it is a sad day when our veterans bills are being payed by a rapper instead of the people who put them over in Iraq and Afaganistan!!

not stupid kanye | 7/22/2008, 12:00 pm EST

oh my god,,,,im actually gonna say something nice about kanye and rap in general,,,,,,,,,way to go kanye,,,,,now only if he could get the rest of rap/hip-hop “artists” to do the same, show us they can do something other than make crappy music.

thomas | 7/22/2008, 11:10 am EST

miuk
slowly, ever so slowly people (bush was elected 2x by somebody)are removing thier blinders and realizing these last 7.5 years have been a disaster.

Makes the Clinton years look golden.

miuk | 7/22/2008, 10:06 am EST

ok, this country is offically fucked. kanye west has to pay veterans bills now? the government can’t pony up any dough to help out the people who served it? wtf? the army can’t even bother to pay for tuition anymore? how screwed up are we that we have to have famous rappers do the right thing (rather than the military)? God help us.
