Smashing Pumpkins, ABBA Get Movie-Related Sales Boosts

The Smashing Pumpkins 1997 tune “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning” has found a new life thanks to the upcoming Watchmen movie. Since it appeared in trailers for the film version of the cult graphic novel, “Beginning” is the number one most downloaded Pumpkins song on iTunes, and is one of the top forty most popular tracks overall. Interestingly, this is not the first time the song has been in a comic book movie as “Beginning” was originally released on the Batman and Robin soundtrack. “The Smashing Pumpkins organization is thrilled with the immediate results they have seen for their song ‘The End Is The Beginning Is The End’ being chosen for Watchmen,” says Pumpkins manager Jared Paul. “This is a good example of the future of The Smashing Pumpkins. We are looking for great marketing alliances to support the band’s past and present musical offerings.” Paul also added that the Pumpkins are currently working on a new song called “G.L.O.W.” that will be released in the fall.

On the other side of the music spectrum, Abba is getting a boost in record sales thanks to the new Mamma Mia! movie: The soundtrack is number one on the iTunes top album chart, and Abba’s Gold: Greatest Hits, has jumped back into the Billboard catalog album charts after a two year absence, where it currently sits at number six. An Apple spokesperson commented, “Often times there are relations between songs prominently placed in movies or ads and their success on the iTunes charts.”

I’m glad that this song is getting a bit more attention, even 11 years later.

Another song that’s shooting up in popularity is “Paper Planes” by M.I.A., which is heard in the trailer for Pineapple Express. Surprised it didn’t get mentioned in this article….

I had heard about the existence of “Beginning is the End is the Beginning” but never found it way back when “The End…” was all the rage. I finally discovered it a few months ago in SP’s “rotten apples” collection and was blown away immediately. “Beginning..” rocks! I had it on loop listening to it for awhile. It was sweet being in the theater watching the trailer and then suddenly realizing that it was one of my favorite songs and that I might of been the only one in the theater who could of identified it. I’m not surprised it’s a hit right now. The trailer action synced up perfect and it had the right mood.

The Watchmen movie is gonna be wicked! If you haven’t already, read the graphic novel, good times.

“Beginning” has long been one of my all-time favorite Billy Pumpkins track. It’s haunting and tragic and every one of his songs should be this good. Damn it. And the more upbeat version is also good, but the surreal swirling background on “Beginning” just grips me every time.

It’s true…these songs were placed as the opening and closing tracks of the Batman and Robin Soundtrack. The first track “The End is the Beginning is the End” was the single and is much more fast paced. The ending track “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning” is the slowed-down remix that is in The Watchmen trailer. It’s no surprise that the song is catching on now, especially with a new outlet. Alot of what the Pumpkins were doing back then was ahead of it’s time.

Both SP songs were on the Batman and Robin soundtrack.

Both are amazing songs… one is defintitely more accesible and that was the popular one back in the late 90’s.

but jack t, the song from the watchmen trailer was on the batman and robin soundtrack - it just wasnt the main single of the two.

its weird that that song is the popular one now. its more upbeat twin song “The end is the beginning is the end” is much much better.

“Interestingly, this is not the first time the song has been in a comic book movie as “Beginning” was originally released on the Batman and Robin soundtrack”

Not quite. The “Watchmen” trailer track is a b-side of the single for the Batman & Robin song “The End is the Beginning is the End”.
