Rock the Bells Begins With Pharcyde Reunion, Passionate Nas Set

7/21/08, 9:15 am EST

Last year’s annual hip-hop spectacle Rock the Bells reunited the estranged members of Rage Against the Machine. This time, it was the Pharcyde’s turn to kiss and make up. Rock the Bells 2008, which launched its six-week international tour July 19th at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in suburban Chicago, featured the first live performance in over 11 years by all four founding members of the long-fractured L.A. alt-rap crew.

Sparked by their eponymous theme song “Pharcyde,” with its raucous roll-call of MCs “Imani, Bootie Brown, Fatlip and Slimkid Tre,” the group’s jubilant, jazz-inflected set ramped up the mercury on an already-sultry summer Saturday — especially their loose-knit, casually raunchy party standards “Ya Mama” and “Oh Shit.”

A Tribe Called Quest closed the nearly 12-hour day with a muscular serving of their more cerebral fare, abetted by a live band and vibrant op-art video flourishes. The Queens-bred innovators were preceded by a politically charged Nas. The durable New York MC called out a number of people and entities on his hit list, including Fox News in his seething track “Sly Fox.” “Watch what you watchin’, Fox keeps feeding us toxins,” Nas spat in warning. “But watch what you say — Big Brother is watchin’.”

This was definitely a live set. I got there right when Rakim hit the stage and it was non-stop all night. For me the highlight was Pharcyde getting back together. They had a live band backing them up… the energy was incredible, i’m glad these cats are back.. DeLa was on point, Nas’s set was wayyy to short, Meth and Red did their thing and had the crowd jumping…. highlight was Meth walking over the crowd… I did feel bad for Mos Def, he lost the crowd for most of the set… I like dude, but he just couldn’t match the energy of the other groups.. Of course Tribe made the night complete, cool use of the video screen and them going through all their classics was the perfect cap to the night

wow, a jab at FOX. How original.

Like the other 3 major news networks haven’t been putting their own slant on the “news” for the last four decades?

People are too stupid for their own good.

Nas has a big ego problem?

Explain that, and explain how he sucks…dont say a word about record sales and dont compare record sales to anybody else. judge him as an MC.

People who call other people stupid for simply pointing out obvious facts that FOX seem to lack is without knowledge themselves. You blindly watch FOX and you have the “Audacity” to call others stupid. Wake up! Maybe you can’t, because you probably work for them.

Whoever says Nas is wack is obviously not in to Hip-Hop culture. His album is the best Hip-Hop record out right now! Must be a Lil’ Wayne fan that wrote that!
