Paul McCartney Joins Billy Joel at Shea, Rocks Quebec

7/21/08, 8:45 am EST

Paul McCartney made his first two North American live appearances of the year this weekend, first playing a handful of Beatles songs at Billy Joel’s second Shea Stadium concert before heading north to play a free show in Quebec to celebrate the city’s 400th anniversary. At the Joel show, McCartney reminisced about when his former band played the New York Mets’ home in 1965 before helping the Piano Man perform “I Saw Her Standing There.” McCartney also closed out the concert by commandeering Joel’s piano for “Let It Be.” Over the course of the show, Joel was also joined by the Who’s Roger Daltrey (who sang “My Generation”) and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler for “Walk This Way.”

C’est ma premiere visite a Quebec, and it’s a great place,” McCartney told the crowd Sunday before his three-hour anniversary show. Macca opened the show with his solo “Jet” before launching into a set list full of Beatles classics like “Drive My Car” and “Yesterday.” Even though McCartney’s performance was initially protested by Quebec nationalists, fans reportedly starting lining up for the free concert on Saturday night, with roughly 200,000 people attending the show at Quebec’s Plains of Abraham.

Quebec City’s 400th got it right: don’t write an article based on the headliners of the National Post in Canada ! No more than a dozen morons started a petition ! I am an open-minded nationalist as 99% of the nationalists in the province and was more than pleased to see one of the last living legends in the wonderful world of rock. What a show ! Merci Sir Paul !

I was there, and Paul’s voice was off. he should think about hanging it up.

Why do the words of half a dozen of politicians & public personas have to overshadow the great event that took place yesterday? If these Quebecers commented the way they did to get attention, we can say the same aboutour anglophone mates who unfortunatly take the words of the minority (very small minority) as being the feeling of all Québeckers and make all of us look bad. It was hardly worth mentioning from the get go… come on!

About what is really important:
I was at the show yesterday, it was the most memorable event to ever hold place on the Plains of Abraham. Sir Paul is a man classy as they get, generous and charming ; thank you Sir!!
Merci Sir Paul, vous avez fait de Québec une ville comblée… encore plus belle de par votre présence!

I was there and WOW! Sir McCartney rock the place. And for the reccord there was 200 000 people in front of the stage but they was easely an other 100 000 people around on the hills and on the back of the stage with a big screen. PLus 4 other big screen around Québec city for the event so I guest it must be more like 400 000 people for the event.

For the thing about french people who against the idea of an british for the 400 it sucks and weird because for what I have know the ‘’celebrity'’ against that we’re not event from Quebec city (mostly Montreal) so as far as I see this, they should shut up. I’m from Quebec city and I hope this small event won’t shadowing what’s important : McCartney Give a amazing show for a huge crowd for the 400th anniversary of their french town.

McCartney is a gentlement , he speak a lot of french between the songs and EVERYBODY there had there big smiles on there face, singing, ‘’ give peace a chance'’ and all the other songs.

thanks for reading and for posting this.

peace.

It was the BEST concert EVER. I was there last night, waited in line for 10 hours, but well worth it. It was funny to see a lot of people not speak a word of english and ask “what did he say?” when he said something in English or how they gasped when he said “Merci Quebec, CANADA”, everybody around me was like “huh my God did you hear that? He said Canada and this is Quebec”, bunch of small minded people, but the fact of the matter was that the concert was the best concert EVER. His command of the stage, his musical repertoire, simply unmatched. Sir Paul is a living Legend.

“Jet” was not a solo recording; he did it with his band Wings. Anyway, these fascist nationalists are so Anti-English. I’m sure most of the province of Quebec wouldn’t agree with them.

It wasn’t McCartney 1st apparence in Quebec’s province. As a matter of facts he was here in spring 2007 with his ex-wife at the Iles-de-la-Madeleine. He did a gig in 1989 at the legendary Montreal’s Forum and later another gig was cancel at the Olympic Stadium. Plus, the Beatles came in Montreal too!!! Can’t you get your facts right?

I believe McCartney was referring to Quebec City when he said it was his first time there. They refer to it as simply Quebec in the province of Quebec.

No sense listening to the Nationalists… a bunch of knuckleheads indeed!

fredyoung | 7/21/2008, 10:12 am EST

It was not the first visit of Sir Paul in the Province of Quebec. He did a concert in Montreal in 1989 and he came with the Beatles in the 60’s.

Quebec City's 400th | 7/21/2008, 9:44 am EST

Get your facts straight. It’s Quebec City’s 400th, not the province. A dozen knuckleheads signed a letter questioning Sir Paul’s presence. It’s hardly worth mentioning

McCartney and Joel & Daltrey- I don’t think it gets any better than this for playing to a huge crowd. They put on such great shows and have more hit songs that anyone. I hope Billy makes these shows into a DVD (sure he will, he does a live CD from every tour)
