Metallica Unveil “Death Magnetic” Cover

7/18/08, 12:07 pm EST

Yesterday, Metallica unveiled the remarkably subtle cover art for its forthcoming album, Death Magnetic. We see shards of metal arranged in a curious pattern, as if by some natural force, creating a shape that looks almost like a coffin — but what does it symbolize? As always, Metallica keeps us guessing.

In an interview with Norwegian television this week, frontman James Hetfield pontificated on the dense similes the album’s title is built upon. “It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley. Some people are drawn towards [death], just like a magnet, and other people are afraid of it and push away.”

Rock Daily will take the rest of the day off to turn on the black light and really think about that one, though we have to admit that this cover is not nearly as badass as Kill ‘Em All or Master of Puppets but is head and shoulders above Load and Reload.

If you think the vagina presented on the cover of Death Magnetic is a mistake, you are truly a dumbass. Since Metallica has lost what little talent they once had, they’ve resorted to cheap visual trickery, trying to get exactly this kind of debate going. Go away Metallica!

Metallica is a kick ass band, i dont care what their art work looks like! Its the music that matters. They will make a strong come back

melbwel | 10/5/2008, 9:48 pm EST

It is SUCH a vagina! (Although I’m also sure it’s just part of the symbolism intended.)

Donk77 | 9/30/2008, 3:55 pm EST

Ok, after reading over most of the comments, i feel saddened. Firstly because of the poor use of the English language in the large majority of comments, secondly because Metallica changed my life. And here’s how:

I was a nerd. I mean a big nerd. One of my nerd buddies bought me a copy of Master one day and i have listened diligently to them ever since. Always hoping that sometime before they die, they would create something powerful again. And i think everyone can agree that fucking Master of Puppets is fucking powerful.

I own every album. 3 or 4 of them on vinyl. Metallica will remain, regardless of posers, economic strife, or what have you. So any who feel that this is the end of the line for Metallica, please think again.

Death Magnetic rocks.

F’n deal with it. posers.

This Album is Fuckin sweet!
of course its not gonna be as good as Master Of Puppets Or Ride The Lightning or Even Kill Em All cause those Albums Are fuckin Classics so if you dip shits would stop sayin that It would be Much Appreteated

BUT……I Do think That Its On Par With Justice thats just my opinion

like look at it this way
“The Day That Never Comes” has the same Feel As “One”
and “Suicide & Redemption”
has the same feel as “To live is to Die”

Plus The Solos are Back!!!!
Kirk is prolly one of my Favorite Guitarist
no one has anything on him

LONG LIVE METALLICA!!!!!!

A Metallica Fan | 9/15/2008, 8:09 pm EST

1st - What the author of this review doesn’t know, that’s it is a fucking nature force that makes that shape. It’s called a magnetic field. Anyway.

2nd - I’m just a fan of their first 4 albums, and I like this one. There are things that I don’t like, but there are things that I do. If you’re gonna critisize the music, take a look at both sides. I love the riffs, it’s progressive, it’s fierce. Fuck Yeah. Something I can mosh to. The vocals sound a little boring, but in all honesty I don’t think Hetfield changed his voice in his entire career, so nothing new there. The lyrics.. meh. They’re no geniuses *cough*larsfuckingidiot*cough*

That’s all I really have to say.

Brandon | 9/12/2008, 4:59 pm EST

I haven’t listened to all of the songs yet, but so far it sounds allot better then ST.anger. I don’t like the cover art or the name, but whatever, if the songs are good then it doesn’t matter. I believe they’ll make there big return. They still are the founding fathers of thrash metal, if you listened to there EARLY songs you’d know that. I’ve listened to them since i was in my mothers womb (she put the head phones to her stomach so i could listen, I don’t remember it but my family tells me she used to do that all the time). I get a good feeling from this album. I’m a big fan of metallica and always will be. they will ALWAYS be gods of metal.

LONG LIVE METALLICA!

and slayer! (though there are rumors going around they may break up soon, but i doubt it)

(R.I.P. Dimebag)

Me Tallica | 9/12/2008, 4:36 am EST

It’s as if they found Viagra. Nice to see they are out of their almost 19 year coma!!

Staal | 9/11/2008, 9:58 am EST

Haha all you metallica haters makes me laugh. Get a life and use it on somthing you like instead of showing everyone how pathetic you are. Rock on Metallica!

richard | 9/10/2008, 4:32 pm EST

Raven | 9/8/2008, 4:56 pm EST

welcome to rehash city, the album is as weak… over done and pathetic.. hetfield sounds like an american idol poser…
the drums and drum machine over worked.. the guitars and rhythm sections are repeats of load, reload and justice for all, kirk is washed up.. most of his rifts were lifts anyway from bands like budgie and diamond head.

yeah the coffin is perfect.. they died when cliff did…

Joel | 9/4/2008, 11:46 am EST

Death Magnetic is a joke. As good as Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning? You have no clue what you’re talking about. That is what they were, and their so-called return to glory sounds nothing like the old stuff. Nothing. Fact two, Metallica is not a Thrash band. Never have been. That term seems to be confused nowaday. Megadeth is Thrash, and Mustaine fits with that kind of singing. Hetfield sounds like a buffoon singing at the local Karaoke bar. If they put something out like And Justice for All, then they would’ve been back. Even something like the Black album would’ve been better than this crap. A lot of people put down Load and Reload, but at least on those they made music for the sake of making it. Some bands age well, but some should be put out to pasture. I’ll let you guess which one Metallica is.

moo | 9/3/2008, 7:20 am EST

cool

metallipherson | 8/30/2008, 3:57 am EST

Since when has Metallica been about cover art? Last time i checked, they were a ROCK band. If you wonder why Metallica is always changing musically, it’s because you can’t do the same thing all the time. At some point you have to grow, try new things, and mature. Not doing that is how bands get stale and end up playing their favorites at local festivals like Naperville Illinois’s Rib Fest instead of Headlining their own tour and playing in places like Soldiers Field or Giants Stadium or indoor arenas like Madison Square Garden or the All State Arena or the Staples Center. What’s important is that they capture a spirit that is authentic, not a spirit that is appeasing. How many other bands from the era in which Metallica started, like Slayer or Megadeath, still have the same drawing power that Metallica has? How many bands consisting of 4 guys in their 40’s can still be relevant in today’s society? Well that could lead one to think has Metallica sold out? Do they care about the business end of things more than the music end of thing? And there is something to be said about a band playing a small but energetic room like the Aragon Ball room in Chicago or the Hammerstein Ballroom in NewYork, but if you asked the lead singer for Slayer if he really felt like he could sell out Madison Square Garden, would he pass it over for a smaller venue, I think he would tell you, Fuck No dude, I will take the Garden. So use your brains and Grow and Mature with the band and embrace the bands willingness to expand on their brilliance!!!

Anonymous | 8/23/2008, 6:45 pm EST

this is going to be a good album. Load and reload totally made me lose interest in them becuase they were turning into fuckin pussies. When St. Anger came out they got me into them again. For those who says Slayers suck, I’ll give you a big fuck you! Slayer’s guitarists plays like a real fucking pro. Kirk Hammet is one of the sloppiest guitar player in the world. Kirk should be out of the band not jason. Fuck you all.

LordOfTheStrings | 8/12/2008, 3:05 pm EST

You guys grow the hell up, if Metallica has to make music just to keep us fans happy then somethings wrong. If it’s St.Anger that makes them happy, then shut-up!! Listen to something else. This album :death magnetics: will rule! and if you don’t like I’ll punch a pepperoni to your head.

xshannonx | 8/4/2008, 11:17 am EST

Wow, you guys have obviously never seen many vaginas :|

You know what it looks like? A coffin in the ground with iron filings around it. No bullshit vaginas. Grow up!

Long live Metallica (:

Also, why does everybody insist on comparing it to the others? Is it illegal for change? You’d all moan if it looked the same!

METALLICA | 7/30/2008, 3:34 pm EST

BERST BAND EVER

loaded | 7/29/2008, 3:11 pm EST

how can ppl say metallica sucks and slayer rocks in the same sentence both bands rule the heavy metal industry. if u dont like them both maybe u should listen to boys to men

ANMD | 7/29/2008, 11:27 am EST

It’s an unintentional vagina. Someone somewhere messed up.

prophet | 7/28/2008, 10:11 am EST

To cheap to pay for real cover art. Regardless, the real METALLICA will come back to us this time.WHIPLASH!

The Muff Man | 7/24/2008, 8:11 am EST

I has to be better than that snare drum in St. Anger. I Thought I listening to John Mellenkamp again.

Wyldechild | 7/22/2008, 8:41 pm EST

it looks like a vagina

guy | 7/22/2008, 10:23 am EST

metallica hasn’t been good since I was in middle school

guy | 7/22/2008, 10:23 am EST

metallica hasn’t been good since I was in middle school

Arch Stanton | 7/21/2008, 1:39 pm EST

Just put a picture of Hetfield and the rest of the band in the coffin. thats where they have been since Masters of Puppets anyways. Newstead left at just the right time. Long Live Cobain….

jv | 7/21/2008, 1:13 pm EST

Well we know where Rolling Stone stands re: Metallica. They posted JR’s one-sided comment about Metallica for their Comment of the Week. JR’s obviously a Metallica hater so what about a counter comment or opposing arguement? That’s very democratic of you RS!

Los | 7/21/2008, 11:46 am EST

Poop chute.

Actually I am looking forward to the album if its anything like how the band is describing it. The album cover doesn’t matter much.

But yeah. Poop chute.

HalfABrain | 7/21/2008, 6:47 am EST

Good grief I can’t believe these comments - you guys not heard of sarcasm? Do you really think it needs explaining what it represents? Once again, Metallica uniting the boneheads.

thomas | 7/21/2008, 4:36 am EST

Yeah, its obviously a coffin with iron filings to show the magnetic lines of flux surrounding it.

But I like the big hairy bush description better.

tallica rules | 7/21/2008, 12:43 am EST

Who cares about the cover, it’ll sell 5 million, they are the best ever! As for Slayer, they can keep playing high school gyms while Metallica will keep selling out stadiums! You losers keep listening to them, tix are easier to get!

MetalHead | 7/21/2008, 12:38 am EST

All you idiots who bash these guys for everything they do…go to hell! They put out and album that they think sounds good and that they think the fans will like…so if you don’t like it, go listen to some other band. Metallica is the best metal band EVER…Death Magnetic is gonna ROCK! f.y.i - Slayer SUCKS!

Kyle Orton's Beard | 7/21/2008, 12:35 am EST

You all suck. MetallicA is probably resuscitated. Be prepared to have your ass kicked back to Master of Puppets, ass nuggets.

Metallicarockshard | 7/21/2008, 12:25 am EST

Metallica is being true to the fans with this cover. They put a picture of the bands asshole on the cover because all of the music inside is shit. Metallica blows, I would rather have a three way with Hall and Oates than to give these guys any more money.

gizzmo | 7/20/2008, 8:34 pm EST

you all know your so excited about the album coming out, that you might just pee yourself!! Thats why you waste time making fun of it.!! WAAAAHAAAHAHAHHAHAH!!!!!

Dave | 7/20/2008, 7:46 pm EST

Its obviously a coffin. Representing death, and the attraction or repelling from. It think its perfectly clear. The artwork is solid. I like it. As for everyone with the Asshole and pussy comments. Your retards. Go back to playing your xbox.

bababooeey | 7/20/2008, 7:38 pm EST

How cool it is to be a metallica hater now that it’s the in thing to do eh?@!

dj big b | 7/20/2008, 7:22 pm EST

beavis | 7/20/2008, 3:48 pm EST

It’s a big sloppy vagina with an old school 70’s bush

St Anger Good | 7/20/2008, 2:00 pm EST

Come on, this is the best? Agree with idea that it is nowhere near as badass as others.

fucker | 7/20/2008, 1:03 pm EST

apollo james | 7/20/2008, 1:03 pm EST

I just bent over a mirror - it’s definately a butthole.

rogerguy | 7/20/2008, 8:07 am EST

I don’t think it looks like a vagina. I think it looks like somebody is spreading their buttcheeks.

metalhead | 7/18/2008, 8:33 pm EST

its the coffin’s magnetic field

Sludge | 7/18/2008, 6:02 pm EST

Another vote for vagina here.

Elliot T | 7/18/2008, 5:54 pm EST

It looks like either a vagina or a finger print/coffin

COMA | 7/18/2008, 5:05 pm EST

Who gives a fuck ??? LISTEN TO SLAYER.

Baked Chocodile | 7/18/2008, 4:10 pm EST

Yep - It’s definitely a puss.

Frank S | 7/18/2008, 3:29 pm EST

Type “iron filngs” and “magnet” into Google and you’ll see similar pictures. That’s what it’s supposed to be. 8th grade science.

Anonymous | 7/18/2008, 3:24 pm EST

Looks to me like when we used to play with iron filings and a magnet.

Chainsaw | 7/18/2008, 3:23 pm EST

Seriously, my first thought was also “vagina,” but the guy who said “asshole” made me laugh out loud.

Pauly | 7/18/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Is that a vagina?

Joe | 7/18/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Looks like something I sketched back in junior high on my notebook. I like it.

Coulter | 7/18/2008, 1:50 pm EST

I actually kinda like it.

Jughead | 7/18/2008, 1:49 pm EST

I swear when I first looked at that picture it looked to me like an asshole in the shape of a coffin. Which would make sense because it’ll be full of shit just like the songs will be on the album.

Georgia O'Keefe | 7/18/2008, 1:44 pm EST

Real subtle there Metallica with that yonic symbol. But hey, the magnetic force is drawing me closer. Hot damn!

Ashley | 7/18/2008, 1:37 pm EST

Since when did Metallica hire Georgia O’Keefe to do their cover art?

Motor Breath | 7/18/2008, 12:56 pm EST

Who cares about the album cover? It’s all about the music and their new album is gonna’ kill!
