Rush Return to American TV with “Colbert” Appearance

7/17/08, 10:05 am EST

Rush made their first American television performance in 33 years last night as they sat down for a Q&A and performed their hit “Tom Sawyer” on The Colbert Report. Why they chose to come back to U.S. TV on the Canadian-bashing Colbert show is beyond us, but it made for entertaining television. “You’ve been touring for 30 years, do you ever get tired of being so awesome and kicking so much ass?” Colbert asked the band, followed by “Will my show end up on your tour T-shirt?” After asking the band whose music influenced them, Colbert deadpanned the question “You’re known for your long songs, have you ever written a song so epic that by the end of the song, you were actually influenced by yourself at the beginning of the song?” For the rest of the interview as well as the band’s performance of “Tom Sawyer,” check out the video above.

Holy Crap! T.V., your making me rethink all my bad thoughts about you.
Finally, someone who can appreciate musicianship and songs of Rush. Colbert, that was awesome!

You do realize that Colbert is a satirist right? That he’s doing a character? That when he bashes Canada, he’s kidding?

The timing of the television performance couldn’t have been more perfect. We got to see Rush up close and personal on the Colbert report on Wednesday, and then less than 24 hours later we were rocking out in person at the Rush concert in Hershey, PA. Fantastic!

The article conveniently omits the reference to their (Rush’s) exclusion in Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame being “BS”.

The tenor of this article is completely disingenuous. Of course Rolling Stone has always hated Rush (until recently, probably due to a new generation of critics). For example, this article quotes RS as “praising” Presto for being “immaculately performed techno metal,” but the actual review was somewhat negative, and this compliment was backhanded at best. They also gave 1-and-a-half stars to A Show of Hands, out of 5. In one of these two reviews (I forget which), they claim that Moving Pictures is Rush’s only worthwhile album. RS has always trashed most classic rock bands from the 70s, and they mocked Guns’n'Roses for admiring Nazareth and Mountain. Let’s face it: for all its claims to cutting-edge status, RS is the epitome of the musical commercial establishment.
