Billy Joel Bids Goodbye to Shea Stadium with Guests Mellencamp, Mayer, Henley

7/17/08, 9:20 am EST

What seemed like the entire population of Long Island showed up at New York’s Shea Stadium for the first of Billy Joel’s two-night send-off to the home of the New York Mets last night. From the opening song, Joel played to the occasion, altering the lyrics of “Miami 2017″ to “They said the Mets can stay, but they can’t play at Shea.” For three hours, Joel occupied the center-field stage, playing a hits-filled set that had the vast majority of the sold-out stadium of 50,000-plus singing along note for note. Though he frequently sipped from a white mug perched on his grand piano and spritzed his throat with spray, Joel’s clear voice never wavered, even after spirited versions of “Allentown” and “The Ballad of Billy the Kid.” Regardless, he had some relief pitching in the form of three special guests that brought the crowd to their feet.

As he banged out the opening piano chords of “New York State of Mind,” Joel introduced his first guest of the night, crooner Tony Bennett. Bennett’s powerful voice filled the open-air stadium as he traded verses with the Piano Man. After Bennett left the stage to applause usually reserved for a David Wright home run, Joel led his band through another five songs — including “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” and a touching “Goodnight Saigon” with a full military chorus — before introducing his next special guest. “I hear they play this song a lot at proms. I didn’t go to the prom, because I didn’t graduate,” Joel said before introducing “This is the Time” and guest guitarist John Mayer, who added Clapton-esque flourishes to the usually subdued piano ballad. After “Keeping the Faith” and a medley of “Stand by Me” and “An Innocent Man,” Joel relinquished the microphone to his next guest, Don Henley, who led the band in a rousing performance of “Boys of Summer.”

Throughout the evening, Joel celebrated the Beatles, who played the first concert of their 1965 tour at Shea Stadium. “I want to thank the Beatles for letting us use their room,” Joel remarked. The tribute began when Joel segued from “River of Dreams” into “A Hard Day’s Night,” and later included “Please Please Me” and “She Loves You.” His final guest of the evening, John Mellencamp, dug into his catalog, performing a rousing version of “Pink Houses” with an ad-libbed line about rising gas prices.

It was at this point that fans in the upper deck noticed that the stadium was actually rocking, leading some to fear the stadium might come crashing down a little sooner than its demolition date. The swaying only got more severe when Joel strapped on his electric guitar for his two heaviest songs, “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “It’s Still Rock & Roll to Me.” For his encore, Joel played an additional five songs, including “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and a “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” sing-along that turned into the crowd favorite “Piano Man,” with the band dropping out to let the crowd serenade the man who’d provided them with so many beloved hits over the years. Joel will play center field for Mets again Friday when he wraps up “The Last Play at Shea.”

Just a short story, In 1975 I met Billy in the Mountains above Boulder Colorado and the band was watching Looney Tunes, I think, and playing one of the first video games “Tanks”. I can’t believe it’s been 33 years!! Oh I almost forgot, Billy is a great boat builder too! I have an aunt and uncle that boat around LI and hang out in the coves.
As for the legendary Paul McCartney, he was seen shopping in east Tucson back in the 70’s. I think he used to swim with his kids in the same proximity! I lived in Tucson and Oracle for many years after Colorado. My friend in Tucson looked just like Paul in the 70’s and they had a mock up Beatles band that played all over Tucson!
Billy and Paul will be forever loved by many and they won’t be forgotten that easily!

Wasn’t there myself. But from the clips I saw on you tube it looked great. I wish i was able to be there. I saw him recently in Oakland CA and Sacramento CA, and he was on fire. The guy is my all time favorite songwriter/performer. I do hope he puts out 1 more rock album before he’s completly retired. He’s got 1 more in him, i know it. Come on Billy you owe your hard core fans one more classic album…..

BILLYJOELL!! | 7/20/2008, 10:25 pm EST

it was great especially when that guy proposed to his girlfriend during always a women
def a great show
jst disappointed that mccartney went to the friday show and not wednesdayy

apes-ma | 7/20/2008, 2:05 pm EST

I hope Joel didn’t drive himself home…

jeannie | 7/20/2008, 7:59 am EST

I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. I went to the Wednesday concert and sort of hoped for a Beatle to surprise the crowd with a song especially after Billy had sang three Beatle songs. But then when I read that Sir Paul showed up at the Friday show I almost cried. We got tickets to what we thouht was the last play at Shea only to be disappointed that it really wasn’t and now this… Paul McCartney is at the real last play at Shea. He could not have gone to both shows? (Tony Bennett was able to.)And Billy had even told Access Hollywood that neither Paul nor Ringo would be able to show up. I feel cheated. How sad!

BillyFan | 7/18/2008, 2:58 pm EST

Another Billy Fan:
My husband actually suggested the guy tell security his wife is dancing at a rock concert so he did stick up for me. And as for the food, what can I say he loves to eat and has the unfortunate luck of always picking the longest line to stand on! :-) Glad you got your groove on too!
Friday show prediction: Joe Cocker and the Steve Miller band are in town and so is Diana Ross. They all have show scheduled this weekend but nothing tonight..

craig | 7/18/2008, 2:49 pm EST

i thought the show was fantastic. billy brought the goods: 35 songs, a nod to the beatles, wonderful special guests… i really couldnt ask for more other than to see Sir Paul. I just know Macca is going to be there on friday, I believe
the last song the beatles played on their 1st night at shea was I’m Down. I wouldnt be suprised if Paul does this at Shea on Friday. Im looking forward to the dvd of this since I didnt
didnt get tickets to the last show (shame on the promoters for making Friday the last show when it was such a difficult task getting the tickets for wednesday) Shame on shea, hooray for Billy!!!

Hey BillyFan!

I was dancing the night away too. In fact, I totally wore out my custom orthotics in my shoes! You were a great dancer I noticed. It was a bit un-BillyFan-like to make your husband go get food, and then go get drinks, and miss the first bit of the show. Either way, it was no excuse for him to side idle while you got harrassed by that loser a few rows back.

LOVED THE CONCERT BUT MY GOD-IT TOOK US FOUR HOURS TO GET HOME-WHAT HAPPENED TO THE EXTRA TRAINS THE LIRR PROMISED US??? LIRR SUCKS!!!!!!!

Girl form Long Island | 7/18/2008, 12:10 am EST

I went to the show on Wednesday night. I had the best time of my life and seats were fabulous. Right on the floor. My only concern is that i will be really dissappointed if Elton John and Paul McCartney show up on Friday night because i paid alot of MONEY for the Last Show.

Please dont let them perform.
this way I can really enjoy my high from the enving.

Billy you are awesome the best

Thanks for the experience

johnny beans | 7/17/2008, 10:47 pm EST

I was sitting in section A-6. Right in front of me was this pretty skinny young lady. guess who?? Mrs. Billy Joel She was dancing up a storm. Great concert Mr. Bill. But like the others I will be upset if paul and sir elton show up. parking for MOS was great as always.

BillyFan | 7/17/2008, 8:36 pm EST

Another BillyFan-
I was sitting there and had a blast. Hope you enjoyed yourself too. If it bothered you I danced the night away, then I’d like to point out I had at least 40,000 people dancing right along with me. :-)

LondonChic | 7/17/2008, 8:05 pm EST

Concert was amazing.
For those asking about parking. We parked one subway stop away.Flushing Main Street and Roosevelt Ave. It is the first stop on the 7, and took the 7 one stop. As we were going against traffic it was a breeze. There was a municipal lot that you can get a sticker for three hours. You have to pay til 10. So we waited till exactly 7 and left. We were at the stadium by 7:15 or so.

Enjoy the show!!!!!

Daphne | 7/17/2008, 6:46 pm EST

As much as I love Billy Joel, I am quite P-ssed off that I paid $98 for being unable to hear any words he said or sang….Whenever he spoke none of my section could understand a single word he said and could barely understand the words that he even sang….who cares if the crowd was singing his songs, I would have liked to have heard HIM even just a little bit! Those seats were the worst seats for a show….EVER!!! I hope those in the nose bleed sec. on Fri. have a better experience. Maybe they will get rid of the ridiculous amount of band members that drowned him out anyway. Big mistake adding more Billy!
A Huge Joel Fan that was TREMENDOUSLY let down!!!!

Another Billy Fan | 7/17/2008, 5:56 pm EST

Hey Billy Fan. Were you sitting in Mezz Section 19, front row?

BillyFan | 7/17/2008, 5:40 pm EST

I went last night and it was AWESOME! I to owas disappointed that the last play at shea wasn’t really the last play and if Elton John and Paul McCartney show up Friday I will be seriously disappointed. I hope not it’ll take away from the expereince I had last night. Everything was great except we were stuck near a lame group of people who were annoyed with me for standing and dancing the whole time. They wanted to SIT for the whole show. They should’ve stayed home and rented something on TV!! Great performance. Billy never disappoints but this time he outdid himself!

Jimmy Cook | 7/17/2008, 5:28 pm EST

Apparently Jesus was double booked for tomorrow’s show and is also appearing in Vegas as a guest star for the Howie Mandel standup show @ the MGM. Since Jesus is a huge fan of “Deal or No Deal”, he regretfully has cancelled his rumored appearance at the Billy Joel concert.

The concert promoters are frantically attempting to fill the void left by Jesus, and are considering the following names:

Jacob Dylan

Jerry Garcia

Luke Perry

Wayne Gretzky

Miley Cyrus

2Pac

The Entire Cast and Crew of the 40 Year Old Virgin

Tony Bennett’s granddaughter

No matter what happens, should still be a pretty good show.

Dennis | 7/17/2008, 4:33 pm EST

One of the last and truely talented. I saw him last week at Hershey stadium play to a multi-generational audience of adoring fans. Incredible talent!

LBPTALK | 7/17/2008, 4:27 pm EST

It was spectacular and kept getting better with every note. You’re right about the stadium rocking tho — but with music like that, who cared!!! Tell me it was recorded!!!

Jungleland | 7/17/2008, 4:21 pm EST

What a fantastic set list. I like that he did some DEEP TRACKS

“Everybody Loves You Now”
“The Entertainer”
“Zanzi bar”

“Cap tain Jack”
“Scenes”, “Miami”, “Angry Young Man”

This is his best stuff

mike | 7/17/2008, 3:43 pm EST

that concert last night was one of the best things i have been a part of. the sound was amazing the lighting was amazing. the fans were rocking. i guess everything that happens at shea is “AMAZIN” great job billy

Jo-Ann | 7/17/2008, 3:35 pm EST

Excellent show! Parking is tough, but worth spending the $30 bucks (if you have a few people in your car you can split the cost). I heard from some people that even the subway was packed…be prepared. I know you want all you can get out of the show, but we slipped out at 11:30 and heard the last songs as we treked to our car….got out of the parking lot in 5 minutes and was home in Connecticut by 12:45!

Reefer Dude | 7/17/2008, 3:31 pm EST

I was at the concert yesterday too. But I went to Shea Stadium thinking I was going to see the Mets vs. Phillies game but instead I got to see a Billy Joel concert. That Met / Phillie game was for next Wednesday, the 23rd, and I was one week early not knowing what day it was. But it was a great concert anyway, especially when I snuck down to the good seats instead of staying up in the nosebleeds. I also bought me a David Wright jersey which was cool.

sharon | 7/17/2008, 3:20 pm EST

Ilove Billy Joel!!

ADP | 7/17/2008, 3:09 pm EST

I heard that A-rod and Madonna are going to be getting married on stage tomorrow as special guests!

Joanne | 7/17/2008, 3:08 pm EST

Cameras are allowed. Outside drinks and food are not. Sound was great, even up where the piegons were roosting! Bring binoculars if you’re up there. It was such an awesome experience. I would go through the aggravation of transporation again if given the chance. Be prepared for crowded trains and cattle car like atmosphere. Didn’t get home until almost 3 (live on the East End of Long Island). Priceless!!!

Goober | 7/17/2008, 3:00 pm EST

Breaking news just in… according to several news sources, the actual guest to appear in Friday’s show is none other than Jesus Christ, who will miraculously appear on stage in a puff of smoke right after the song “Captain Jack.” Jesus will perform a few of his magic tricks and speak of getting high and peace among all peoples and will bless the Mets to win the World Series this year. He will then fly away into the sky like Superman after mentioning it’ll be another 2,000 years until he appears again. This is going to be the concert of the century!

br | 7/17/2008, 2:37 pm EST

Do you think the sound would sound terrible if you tried to listen to it by the 7 Train entrance near right field?

Scooby | 7/17/2008, 2:23 pm EST

According to the very reliable NY Post, rumours say that Li’l Wayne, Nas, Metallica, Britney Spears, Carrot Top, Big Bird, George Steinbrenner, Dick Cheney and the Penthouse Pet of the Month will be making guest appearances in Friday’s show. Damn, it’s gonna be great.

New Jersey Met Fan | 7/17/2008, 2:17 pm EST

Terrific show. I have seen Springsteen and now Joel at Shea and have to say great experinece both times. The sound for both shows was much better than anything you would hear at Giants Stadium. The surprise guests were a great plus. NYT and Newsday reports the shows are being filmed for a full-length documentary for theater release — ala The Last Waltz.

However, I do have one question the Wilpons (The owners of the Mets). Which is more important — providing an enjoyable experience for the fans or maximizing your beer profits. They were selling supersized cups of beer all night, with 20 something folks going to the concession stands every 30 minutes and returning with two at a time. The folks in my section were drunk, rude and obnoxious and when we complained to security all the did was move some folks who didn’t have tickets for the area. Shea needs to do a better job about resticting beer sales when someone clearly has had enough.

Charlie | 7/17/2008, 1:53 pm EST

According to Fox News, rumored guests for Friday are Steven Tyler, Roger Daltry, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney himself.

Jimmy Cook | 7/17/2008, 1:48 pm EST

My cousin is a concert promoter on the Island, and he told me that the word among the music professionals is that a chartered jet from London is landing @ LGA tomorrow afternoon with Bono, Elton John, Sting, Ben Folds, Phil Colins, Mick Jagger, Prince Charles, and Coldplay. Nothing is fully confirmed, but it’s looking like a crazy lineup for tomorrow.

Tim | 7/17/2008, 1:38 pm EST

Billy Joel and John Mellencamp — what a cool pairing. Glad they finally played together.

Kristin | 7/17/2008, 1:30 pm EST

A great concert….outside acoustics, so don’t expect the sound quality to be like other venues….Sang all the favorites….would have liked to see some of his more obscure songs, but no one wants to hear those :( . Get there early for parking, or suffer the consequences….pay parking is charging 30.00, so plan accordingly! Let’s Go Mets! Yankees Stink!

Marc | 7/17/2008, 1:10 pm EST

what time did Wednesday’s concert start? Was there an opening act? Asking because I will be running late and want to be prepared!!!

Katy B. | 7/17/2008, 1:04 pm EST

For those who were asking…

Cameras seem to be allowed. I had mine and it wasn’t a problem. It’s not worth it if you’re taking still though, unless you feel like taking pics of the jumbo screens, you won’t get anything. Video, however, was totally worth it for the sound alone. (They check bags though, so ladies, I would just bury your camera in your purse.)

The whole “special guests” thing was very hush-hush, so no, no one said anything about different guests. I’m guessing it’ll be the same line-up, as Billy apologized profusely about the first show not actually being the “last” show. I doubt he would cheat the first nighters out of seeing other performers.

DON’T PARK IF YOU CAN AVOID IT.

The encores ended at 11:45.

The walk from the stadium to the parking lot/train station SUCKS. We were packed like cattle and could barely move, so get your MetroCard or whatever all set up BEFORE the concert. But once we actually got to the train platform, it was fine.

But all in all, it was pure awesome. Worth every cent. Enjoy Friday concert goers!

Turnstiles Dan | 7/17/2008, 1:01 pm EST

Sound quality of outdoor shows is always inferior to indoor. Billy’s voice gave out alittle more than halfway through the show. How bout bringin back Ritchie Cannata and Liberty Devitto and put aside the feud? Where’s Steve Winwood and Cindy Lauper who are also friends of Billy’s? How bout adding “All You Wanna Do Is Dance” to the setlist? It has a reference to the Beatles and should get people dancing in the aisles.

Zach | 7/17/2008, 12:53 pm EST

The guests should be different for Friday, Mellencamp and Mayer both have shows Friday I believe. And Elton John is off Friday so who knows, I’d be a little upset if Elton comes out. However, this was no concert, it was an experience. I hope notes were taken and that we get more summer concerts in the new stadiums.

NY State of Mind | 7/17/2008, 12:51 pm EST

Mr. Met… I believe we had the all star game, a parade, and the team with more history in the last 10 years than Shea has ever had. By the way… where did the Pope go? Not Shea! Anywho… Billy Rocked, I love work with a hangover!

Jaycee | 7/17/2008, 12:48 pm EST

Special Event Parking price was $30 compared to $15 for a Mets game. Try getting into the lot across Roosevelt Ave from Shea. If you can’t get in from the GCP entrance try the entrance on Roosevelt Ave. There were plenty of spots in the back but they were sending people to the Hall of Science about a mile away.

Great show. Ended around 11:45

GP | 7/17/2008, 12:28 pm EST

I’m going Friday; Any suggestions on parking, other than the obvious? What did they charge to park at the (limited)Stadium parking lot?

Steve | 7/17/2008, 12:26 pm EST

I’m still bitter that I was lied to about purchasing tickets to the “Last Show At Shea Stadium”. Bad move, Mr. Met. If the show on Friday differs at all from the one I saw last night, I’m planning on making an angry phone call.

Mr. Met | 7/17/2008, 12:22 pm EST

Hey Yankee fans - how come you guys have no big name artist playing at Yankee Stadium as a farewell concert? Oh yeah, Jon Bon Jovi played at Central Park as a farewell. Hhahhahah what a joke. Shea Stadium is going down in style with a great tribute by Billy Joel and resurgence in the standings by the NY Mets. Screw the Yankees and the greedy, authoritarian Steinbrenners.

Andrew | 7/17/2008, 12:06 pm EST

I’m going friday and I was wondering if he said anything about different guests of friday or the same one. I heard rumors about Elton John coming because he is in NJ this week. Any truth to these?

Cameras are allowed | 7/17/2008, 11:56 am EST

Everybody seemed to have cameras.

Momanddaughter | 7/17/2008, 11:55 am EST

Awesome!! My 10 year old daughter’s first concert with her Mom. Sound was outstanding, Billy was on his game- great surprise guests. Worth every penny. Wish I was going back for Friday. Get a ticket if you can.

Roseann | 7/17/2008, 11:53 am EST

Great show!
Sat in field level $98.00 tix between home plate and first base. Hard to see because you the stage was so far away. It was worth every $.
Very good sound system and special screen effects. Special guests were great, little disappointed that Mayer didn’t sing.
Loved the tribute to the Beatles.
Billy Rocked Shea!!!

Andrew | 7/17/2008, 11:52 am EST

Bossman | 7/17/2008, 11:48 am EST

If someone who attended last night’s show would be so kind:

Were cameras allowed?

What time did encores end?

Okay really pushing it, but were any additional LIRR trains added (I’m an Eastender)?

I feel for those that bought what they thought were tickets to the “Last” Last show….. I did too but unloaded them and picked up tix for Friday in the secondary market.

Alan | 7/17/2008, 11:38 am EST

Good concert, would have been great if we could actually hear any of the words. Sound quality was terrible. I agree with Carl - shoot the sound engineer.

AlanB | 7/17/2008, 11:29 am EST

Sound was fantastic (even in the upper deck. Maybe Carl never went to an outdoor stadium concert before). The show was great, though not as good as his shows from the “glory days” before he got too old to run around the stage like a madman. The crowd is very different these days too. Was I the only one in the nosebleeds who knew the lyrics to Souvenir? It was a perfect closing song.

JEALOUS | 7/17/2008, 11:26 am EST

wish I coulda been there…i’m sure it wasn’t the same with out me

Mary | 7/17/2008, 11:23 am EST

The concert was great, however I attended the Aug 15, 1965 Beatles concert and I thought that maybe Paul Mccartney would show. I was upset when they added a second “Last Play at Shea” and will be really upset if Paul shows at that one. Other than that Great Show. Billy Joel is phenomenal

Lily | 7/17/2008, 11:17 am EST

Not growing old without a fight…..Billy Joel was awesome and made me feel like I was back in my 20’s again. What a nite it was….

Anny | 7/17/2008, 11:16 am EST

This was my 7th Billy Joel concert and the best ever! Everything and everybody were rockin’ - awesome, awesome never to be forgotten experience!

GOO GOO GA GA | 7/17/2008, 11:12 am EST

Nice concert

John from Jersey | 7/17/2008, 11:03 am EST

It was an incredible night. I saw all ages of people at the concert which just goes to show that Billy Joel is still one of the greatest entertainers on the planet. My wife and i had an awesome time and I just wish we had tickets for Friday nites show.

Carl Pugliese | 7/17/2008, 10:58 am EST

Shea owes me money, because over in red section 43 the audio was garbled, and the music was half as good as it could have been. We had no speakers pointed in our direction. Whoever the sound engineer was, he needs to go back to school. A lot of us in the upper deck didn’t have the great experience this should have been. Shame on Shea, but I still love Billy regardless.

Joanne | 7/17/2008, 10:45 am EST

I was in the “nose bleed” section and yes it was literally rocking! Awesome night - awesome concert!!!

Janet Polhamus | 7/17/2008, 10:02 am EST

I love Billy Joel, but I love the Beatles more!! It was a great tribute that Billy made the bow to the Beatles that they were the best band that there ever was and the best band that ever will be!! Very Classy Billy Joel!!
