Ravers attending a music festival in Kirzhach, Russia, had a lot more than the long-term effects of Ecstasy to worry about as more than 30 festival-goers were blinded by a laser light show. After heavy rains forced organizers to put a tent up over the outdoor festival, lasers meant to beam up into the sky instead beamed up into the tent’s canopy. The reflection of the lasers off the tent caused permanent eye damage in many of the ravers, with some losing nearly 80% of their eyesight. “I immediately had a spot like when you stare into the sun,” said one afflicted attendee. “After three days I decided to go to the hospital. They examined me, asked if I had been at Open Air and then put me straight in the hospital.” The owner of the Moscow laser rental company blamed the technicians for placing such a powerful laser in such a confined area.
