Bon Jovi Pack in Hits and Hardcore Fans at Free Central Park Show

7/14/08, 5:31 pm EST

“This is the Great Lawn in the greatest park, in the greatest city in the universe,” Jon Bon Jovi marveled before performing what easily could have been one of the biggest concerts New York City’s Central Park has ever seen. Over 67,500 free tickets were distributed to the 50,000-capacity space — a solid chunk going to fans who flew in from other states, bid desperately on eBay and even camped out from 6 PM the night before to attend the two-hour MLB All-Star Week performance.

A woman in the front of the crowd with an ankle-to-knee cast spoke before the show about how she popped her knee Thursday. “All I could think was: how am I going to get to Bon Jovi?” she said.

The band played hits spanning a 25-year career — everything from “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name” off 1986’s Slippery When Wet to more recent hits like “Have a Nice Day” and “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.” The band spiced up tunes like “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” with bridges from the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout,” and interrupted their performance of “Bad Medicine” with a high-energy excerpt from the Isley Brothers’ “Shout.”

sorry garry, but u ´re totally wrong. How many bands do you know that after 25 years can play like them? how many old bands are rocking the world like them in these days? Even greatest band like metallica, aerosmith, u2 dont make so many concerts, and dont make so many sold outs stadium concert all over the world.
I dont understand why bon jovi dont receive the same respect that a lot of bands do, even new bands are in the news more than bon jovi.
bon jovi rocks now and forever!!

Hey Garry, stop being childish. Bon Jovi has sold over 120 million albums, that’s more than the Stones, and have been around longer than The Beatles! Jon has every right to include himself in that statement. He is a rock superstar, what are you?

I thought Jon Bon was Porter Wagner now-a-days? YEE-HAW!

Dave Matthews, after finishing a song while playing a free show for approximately 80,000 people in Central Park in 2003:

“The greatest park in the world in the middle of the greatest city in the world.”

Sounds like Jon Bon Jovi is a Dave Matthews Band fan.

I heard Bon Jovi dedicated “Livin On A Prayer” to the New York Yankees in reference to their chances of making the playoffs or the World Series this year.

JBJ is a better showman/frontman and singer than anyone in the stones or beatles and check out Sambora’s performance at CP - awesome….who’s better than him in either of those bands: answer; nobody. BJ has earned the respect they’ve always deserved as one of the greatest rock bands ever.

Maybe if he had mentioned them in different sentences with maybe a small pause in between and then whispered his name really quietly whilst bowing to the ground chanting I’m not worthy it might not have bothered you as much??
(Thats called sarcasm by the way)
I hope Jon and the boys are around for many more years just to piss off all you critics and haters out there.
And for the millions of adoring fans the world over…
Keep the Faith !!!!!

Garry | 7/14/2008, 6:20 pm EST

Where does BJ get off mentioning The Beatles and Stones in the same sentence as himself?
