Slipknot, Disturbed, DragonForce Pound Out New Songs at Rockstar Mayhem Fest

7/10/08, 11:02 am EST

Post-modern hardcore hybrids reigned supreme at the inaugural installment of the Rockstar Mayhem Festival, but not without a nod or two to ye olde metal. For their encore, headliners Slipknot thrashed through “(sic)” while drummer Joey Jordison’s colossal kit rose up 20 feet above the stage and tilted at a gravity-flouting angle. Tommy Lee should be seeking royalties.

The nine-member masked militia churned through much of their back catalog and dropped in two numbers from their upcoming All Hope Is Gone. “Psychosocial,” the leaked lead single with an uncharacteristically melodic chorus, drew the only lukewarm response of the set.

For all the complexity of their stage production, Slipknot seemed off the cuff compared to Disturbed. Every move of singer David Draiman was made with rigid, theatrical exaggeration. He led the rabid audience through a chant of “USA!” before going into “Inside the Fire” from the recently released Indestructible, the band’s third chart-topping album. All guttural growls and f-bombs, Disturbed’s songs hammered the crowd with an indiscriminate but vehement aggression.

The kings of theatrical exaggeration, however, were undoubtedly DragonForce. Sporting ass-length hair, leather pants and dueling guitar solos, the U.K. gamer-metal warriors were clearly having the most fun of any of Mayhem’s main stage performers. They saved “Through the Fire and Flames” — the power anthem that has inspired many a guitar hero — for last.

These bands were flashier, angrier, and faster than Mastodon, but none matched the Georgia quintet’s smoldering intensity. They kicked off the first main stage set by pummeling early arrivals with the double-kick-drum thunder of “Colony of Birchmen.” By the second song, overeager crowd surfers were being plucked from the pit by security.

Outside the main stage action, snowcapped Mt. Rainer was framed by the Jagermeister and the Hot Topic stages. Motocross riders launched across the festival grounds, as buoyant as Jordison’s drum set would seem at the close of the festival.

dudes, i went on aug. 13 and i had the best most awesome freakin time ever. I loved it. Slipknot is like my favorite band ever and getting the chance to see them was just …..amazing…. Disturbed kicked ass five finger death punch, walls of jericho, dead broke, i dont really care for mastadon. Dragonforce was intense. suicide silence was good but i missed the red chord, and underoath….oh well. oh but the only thing that sucked was that i got a ticket for “juevenile possesion on tobacco” lol cigarettes screw me over all the time……MAYHEM FEST BABY!!!!!!!!! ^.^

7/10 After 2.5 years away, Slipknot tore my face off. They rocked. Disturbed was good!!!!! Was it Dragon farse, well? All and all the best concert I have ever been too. And I have been to a lot. I am 52, my wife is 64.

I went to the aug. 2nd show which was rainy as hell all day, but that didn’t slow me down. Dragonforce and Disturbed totally raised the intensity of the crowd and of course the pit action. I don’t even remember how many bruises, cuts, and sprained body parts I got, but I’d do it again in a heart beat!

The whole show was great… Aug 9th in MI… Not a bad set all day. Fun pits and screamin’ death metal! Wow! Favorite act of the daytime stages was 5 Finger Death Punch! Great band and superior vocals. Even the lighter fair was cool with Black Tide and Airbourne. Disturbed sounded great live, and Slipknot really finished up strong. They are a really fun group and great musicians. Soooo much face melting guitar in one day! It was great!

Going Aug 9th! Very excited. Suicide Silence rocks… Bludgeoned to Death!!! Walls of Jericho… Candice you little screamer… needs a spankin’… I do hate it when they schedule a great band last on the ealy stage… at Ozzfest they closed the early stage with Rob Zombie!

Dragonforcealltheway | 7/28/2008, 3:07 pm EST

Whoa, didn’t even know Machine Head was there WTF? Mastadon seemed…overrated? F Slipknot and their masks, Disturbed was the best performance of the night, and this is coming from an avid Dragonforce fan.

Rick L from Seattle,Wa | 7/17/2008, 12:23 pm EST

The only main stage band worth a damn was Slipknot, and they were insane. Dragonforce was out of their league, and the classic Mastodon was lame. Disturbed was alright, but then again every song sounds the same! Slipknot ALL THE WAY - ALL HOPE IS GONE!

Ki | 7/14/2008, 3:17 pm EST

OK so have i missed mayhem uk tour or what???

H. Bomb | 7/14/2008, 1:32 am EST

Why the hell did they schedule Machine Head when the crowds were pouring into the mainstage to get good spots for the headliners?

I saw Five Finger Death Punch on the Jager stage and then staked out at the very front of the lawn for the rest of the afternoon… Best $25 festival seats EVER!

Me | 7/14/2008, 12:47 am EST

Pfft, Dragonforce for life, I’ll be the one tomorrow in Sac going nuts to Fury of the storm

Lame Review | 7/13/2008, 5:15 pm EST

Mastodon sounded like crap at the SF show. Disturbed, Slipknot and Local boys MachineHead definetly stole the show.\m/

Uh huh | 7/13/2008, 4:22 pm EST

I just bought tickets to mayhem, and first off, machine head may be good, but so is slipknot and all the other bands on the tour.

John | 7/12/2008, 8:53 pm EST

I don’t remember Mastodon having crowd surfers… and I remember everyone singing along and going crazy to Psychosocial…. hmmmm

Carl | 7/11/2008, 11:46 am EST

Mastodon is a quartet, not a quintet. But their intensity is indeed smoldering.

Jeff | 7/11/2008, 5:05 am EST

Absolutely no mention of MACHINE HEAD - the only band worth mentioning on this tour.

Shame on you.

Wow | 7/10/2008, 2:23 pm EST

sounds craptacular!
