Obama Name-Checks Lil Wayne at Georgia Town Hall Meeting

7/9/08, 1:21 pm EST

Given the contents of Barack Obama’s iPod, it comes as no surprise that the Democratic presidential nominee has a pretty good knowledge of music. That knowledge was put on display last night at a town hall meeting in Powder Springs, Georgia, as Obama name-checked chart-topping rapper Lil Wayne in a speech discussing the importance of staying in school. Addressing the subject of dropping out of high school to pursue a hip-hop or basketball career, Obama said “You are probably not that good a rapper. Maybe you are the next Lil Wayne, but probably not, in which case you need to stay in school.” The crowd responded with a standing ovation, as they could all agree that Tha Carter III is a classic. Obama also had a message for all the wanna-be Kobe Bryants out there, saying “I know you think you are, but you’re not. You are over-rated in your own mind. You will not play in the NBA.” There have been countless cases thus far of rappers name-checking Obama; this marks the first time Obama has returned the favor. Meanwhile, John McCain still thinks we should ban 2 Live Crew.

You hear that rapper wanna-be’s out there? Just because you know how to rhyme and can make record-scratching noises with your mouth doesn’t make you a rapper. Stay in school! We don’t need any more Lil Wayne’s or 50 Cent’s or Ludacris’ out there stealing the thunder from the rock arena. Yeahh boyyz!

10 years from now, no one will know or care about any of this so called “krunk” or whatever you want to call this horrible vacation island spring break mtv crap music that it is. fade it in….fade it out. simple as that. no talent, no reason to even mention them.

its funny how people are bashing lil wayne in their comments, but in reality his newest album is about to reach double platinum in under a month…. if you listen to the lyrics he makes similes and metaphors that even you wouldnt be able to put together…. you might not like him or his music, but you can’t deny the effect he has on music right now….

Reading the previous blog I have to laugh at the effect on music that “Lollipop” has. It is true that it does have an effect on music RIGHT NOW, because the state of the music industry, in particular hip-hop, is laughable. Now the effect that “Nation of Millions” by Public Enemy had, THAT’S something to marvel at. Don’t get me wrong, Lil Wayne is skilled. But his effect on hip-hop will eventually fall somewhere greater than Mase and less than Cypress Hill.

Obama says YES WE CAN!!! Oh wait, you probably cant be a good rapper or an NBA star. But YES WE CAN!!!

I think Obama just used Lil Wayne’s name as an example. I think he’s just the flavour of the month, just like Flo Rida was a few months ago. I just can’t see The Carter 3 being called a classic. A classic remains popular forever, and I just don’t see people listening to it 20 years from now.

He might be unsure about War in Iraq right now, but at least it looks like Obama’s on the forefront of the “War on Hubris”

Once everyone gets past the fact that Wayne acts ignorant 90% of the time you might realize that he is a great rapper and Tha Carter III is an instant classic. It’s not like Wayne came out of nowhere. Actually LISTEN to his records and his mixtapes.

Hip-Hop and Rap music are here to stay, and I think the fact that people still pull out Straight Outta Compton and rock that proves that in 20 years people will be listening to Lil Wayne. Obama is using these speeches to connect with his younger audiences. And it’s INDUCING…

Hey I love Weezy and I think Obama is just that much cooler!

America was built on the ideals that you can be whatever you want to be. And now we’ve got a possible future president saying “no you can’t”. That scares me. If Lil wayne or Kobe Bryant would of listened to this clown they wouldn’t be who they are now. It’s not like we have droves and droves of kids dropping out of high school for the sole purpose to become stars. give me a break. Obama is a Joke. I don’t even like rap or koybe bryant. But props to them for following their dreams and becoming what they wanted to become. I can’t believe obama is totally discouraging what this country was founded on. Please keep him as far from the white house as possible.
