Nickelback Sign 360 Deal with Live Nation

7/8/08, 9:00 am EST

Nickelback have signed a three-album/three tour 360 deal with Live Nation, joining a roster that already includes Madonna, Jay-Z and Shakira. The contract is estimated to be worth between $50-$70 million. In terms of numbers, Nickelback may be the safest bet Live Nation has invested in so far, as the band’s most recent album All the Right Reasons has sold roughly ten million copies worldwide, and their latest tour of North America and Australia grossed more than $67 million. However, Nickelback still owe their current label, Roadrunner Records, another two albums before they’ll be able to record anything for Live Nation. In addition to the touring and recording angles, Live Nation will also handle the band’s merchandising, website, licensing, sponsorship, fan club, DVDs, endorsements, secondary ticketing and broadcasting rights. Nickelback’s signing marks the second artist, to sign with Live Nation since the departure of CEO Michael Cohl, who stepped down after a disagreement over the direction the concert giant should take. Ironically, Cohl reportedly preferred signing artists to 360 deals while other board members were more reluctant.

Seriously, rock music has gone down the drain, and Nickelback is one of the only bands keeping it afloat. You all can hate on them if you want to but seriously, creating catchy songs is NOT selling out. It would make more sense to hate on the “alternative” music craze, which despite exceptions, seems to be a way that untalented singers are able to make money. Listen to Gotta Be Somebody. It’s catchy, and heaven forbid you actually might like it if you don’t expect Nickelback to be something that they’re not. If you want to head bang listen to Metallica. Nickelback is here to rock. (Although I will say their latest album is a disappointment.)

For $70MM you could call me lame, horrible, sell-out, etc.

Money talks.

J'aime | 7/12/2008, 11:28 am EST

NickelBack blows. The only people that buy this garbage are trendy girls and douchebag guys. But thats America these days. I dont think for one minute that these guys will even be relevant by the time they get to the first Live Nation album.

Steve | 7/11/2008, 3:57 pm EST

The Fox loooooves Nickleback. (The Fox is an extremley lame Vancouver radio station that wouldn’t be around without bands like Nickleback.)

Steve | 7/11/2008, 3:54 pm EST

God help us all

JD | 7/10/2008, 11:35 am EST

If you looked up SELL-OUT in the dictionary, you’ll see a picture of that mug. The big mystery is why their album remains on the charts after three years and headed for its fourth Christmas.

angusfan1 | 7/10/2008, 10:00 am EST

Every song nickelback has made is killed by radio! Hey, hip radio stations, lets try playing songs we havent heard 10 billion times, eh? I tell ya, there’d be alot less suicides in America if nickelback would go back to CANADA!

pflo | 7/10/2008, 1:57 am EST

They still suck. Live nation will eat this one, mark my words.

oh jesus god no | 7/10/2008, 12:56 am EST

These guys need to just take there mountains of money that they clearly don’t deserve and stop punishing those of us who have a taste in music! Stop making albums already! Please! If I have to hear this shit band on rock radio daily for another ten years I will lose my mind! Oh and for the fans, you may as well be listening to the fucking Backstreet Boys! This power/pop/ballad bullshit has gone on far too long! NO MORE NICKELBACK!

that1guy | 7/10/2008, 12:45 am EST

I wish this band would just go away. And stay away. FOREVER!

Chad is a joke. | 7/10/2008, 12:03 am EST

I live in Abbotsford, B.C. where Chad lives and the guy is so hated around town it is hilarious, he is such a try hard. Not only that, he is married and bangs some chick from the Cactus Club on the side, KNOWN FACT. He is a douche, everyone around here know’s it and laugh’s at him. You can find him in Langley, B.C. at the Casino any given night.

poo on nickelback | 7/9/2008, 7:22 pm EST

For hard-rock ridiculousness, Nickelback is tough to beat.

rolling stone | 7/9/2008, 7:19 pm EST

Nickelback’s fifth disc consists of eleven giant-chorused songs about prisons of the mind, wanting to be a rock star and how it’s hard to up and leave when she’s going down on you. The band’s wordy hooks and big riffs are as meticulously arranged as a thousand-dollar Nativity scene, but — with the exception of the sleekly rocking “Animals” and some hope-and-faith platitudes — All the Right Reasons is so depressing, you’re almost glad Kurt’s not around to hear it.

Jake | 7/9/2008, 2:07 pm EST

people really dont get it do they. why piss and moan all the time about nickelbck when obviously their opinions are never going to be listened too and have no effect apart from the band wanting to make more music. i dont blame the band as they have found something that works and i personally enjoy it. Nickelback haters get a life as all you seem to do is scour the net for nickelback topics to hammer. it would be great to know when you haters actually listened to a nickelback album and not just singles and what also makes you music experts!!

Idiots | 7/9/2008, 8:34 am EST

You guys don’t get it, the more you hate on this band the more albums their gonna sell and the more money their gonna make. Learn a life lesson and stop caring. The problem is you all do care, just look at how many responses to this article there have been! If you hate the band STOP going to their shows and STOP buying their albums. I’m gonna continue to support them but not in the blind fashion that you all do.

joey | 7/9/2008, 1:57 am EST

nickelback make me want to listen to dance music

JD | 7/9/2008, 1:00 am EST

Prepare for five more albums of the same old stuff.

The Intl | 7/9/2008, 12:35 am EST

who cares?

vile | 7/9/2008, 12:14 am EST

reasons why i dont like nickleback:

1. fans want me to kill myself
2. they are a pathetic post-grunge lock-jaw facsimile with no style or long-term musical significance whatsoever whose songs are unoriginal
3. i LOOOOOOOOVE the white stripes!!!!!!!

Wow | 7/8/2008, 11:47 pm EST

Worst band on the planet, however, ten million tone deaf geeks disagree with me so looks like my opinion don’t matter.

Nooch | 7/8/2008, 10:33 pm EST

All you haters out there might as well talk out of your ass. If you don’t like Nickelback fine but if that has to go hand in hand with how much you think they suck then give a good reason as to why they suck. All of you spineless unintelligent, think you’re all hip because you like the White Stripes seriously need to all end your lives asap.

Timothy | 7/8/2008, 9:26 pm EST

nickelback is for the most part awful and horribly unoriginal, but ‘rock star’ is a good satire of a song, you have to give them that.

YodaMcCheese | 7/8/2008, 6:20 pm EST

i saw nickelback open for the rolling stones and they almost ruined my night…

sally | 7/8/2008, 5:46 pm EST

nickelback is without question the shittiest band i have ever laid ears on… someone pay them to never write a song again

V | 7/8/2008, 4:54 pm EST

Cool…

zagreux | 7/8/2008, 4:01 pm EST

Okay, whether you hate Nickelback or love them (I personally like 2 songs by them but still feel disgusted with myself when ever even those two come on) we should all be able to agree that this deal sucks for live nation. They still owe their label two albums. That means in probably five years they’ll probably be recording material for a livenation album. Does anyone, even fans, knowing that U2 and the Stones are the only band to hit it big and still be sucessful for decades, really think that Nickelback will still be having hits and selling millions of records come there third live nation album? There averaging one every two to three years so with 5 being the number of albums that they have to make to complete the live nation deal, we’re talking probably 12 years from now being when they’ll be puting out their last album and tour with live nation. Anyone really think this modern day Reo Speedwagon is going to be selling out stadiums or going platinum in 2020?

Tino | 7/8/2008, 1:31 pm EST

I wish Nickelback would sign a deal to leave this world.

Mule | 7/8/2008, 1:21 pm EST

I saw Nickelback…and demanded it be at least a dime.

stuporfly | 7/8/2008, 1:00 pm EST

Hope Live Nation provides that goateed douche with a driver as part of the deal.

Carmine | 7/8/2008, 12:58 pm EST

Mike you make some compelling points there buddy. First off you make no sense, can’t back up anything to save your life and apparently 10 million people also think you are wrong about Nickelback. This band gets better and better with each album. Catchy hard rock tunes with an edge and being famous has not softened up at all but you keep fighting the good fight Mike hahaha.

mike | 7/8/2008, 12:34 pm EST

who likes nickelback? go back to canada! this band is terrible, the worst…they can’t write a song to save their lives…and now they get 50-70million??? crimony!

d | 7/8/2008, 11:54 am EST

God help us all.
