Metallica Reveal More “Death Magnetic” Package Details

7/8/08, 2:05 pm EST

More details of the various formats of Metallica’s Death Magnetic have emerged on the band’s Mission:Metallica website. The cheapest option, with a $24.99 price tag, is the simple Digital Death Magnetic package, which gives its buyer the digital album at midnight of street date, plus the option to download two Metallica summer concerts, ringtones and the access to the Platinum areas of the Mission:Metallica site. The next step up takes that package and adds a physical CD to the mix (with free shipping!). Then, there’s the behemoth Limited Edition Collectible. For $124.99, you can get the digital, physical and 5LP versions of Death Magnetic, plus a lithograph. All three packages enter you into exclusive contests to win a chance to meet the band at select festivals. And the best part: They all come with $10 off merch or Fan Club membership at Metallica.com. You can peruse which package is right for you here. Death Magnetic is due out in September.

I’d buy that for a dollar.

Banger | 7/8/2008, 3:19 pm EST

There’s also another package option which isn’t mentioned above. For the low price of $179.99 you get the digital, physical and 5LP versions, the lithograph plus you get to wash the sweaty balls of James Hetfield backstage after one of their concert festivals. I’ll be getting this package for sure!

bushKilla | 7/8/2008, 3:24 pm EST

Or you could just download the whole thing for free

JR | 7/8/2008, 3:42 pm EST

I think the best package is the package I’m holding between my legs. Lars you really need to hire someone to keep you up to date with reality. I’m withholding my name for this comment just in case you sue me for saying that you gutless drummer.

Brian | 7/8/2008, 3:48 pm EST

Or you can buy it at a box store and lessen the blow from your disappointment.

mr roboto | 7/8/2008, 4:57 pm EST

how about none of the above?

personally, i’d like to buy a cassette tape of “death magnetic” that i can play in my souped up Opel Manta. \m/

Ben Franklin | 7/8/2008, 5:53 pm EST

What a rip. Metallica is just another sell out.

They did have balls, back in the day [Kill em All], but that is long gone. Go back to the French Riviera you speedo wearing sausage chompers.

Phil | 7/8/2008, 8:13 pm EST

Can’t I just download it from Napster?

the word | 7/8/2008, 8:59 pm EST

Lars is a close talker.

Jeff | 7/8/2008, 9:37 pm EST

This is smart – get all the pre-ordering they can before it inevitably leaks.

For the record, Lars was right. Look what illegal downloading has done. Go pick on Dr. Dre, he said the same thing and had the nerve to say “I have kids to feed”.

Jetmark3 | 7/8/2008, 9:42 pm EST

Now on this new album err vapor download will there be any dueting with Carrie Underwood? Hmm once there was “creeping death” now just creeps…

Josh | 7/8/2008, 10:15 pm EST

…Or just download off of u-torrent and enjoy

sandmanhasentered | 7/8/2008, 10:25 pm EST

metallica sucks

Joe | 7/8/2008, 10:56 pm EST

Anybody hear the album yet?

cashpiles | 7/8/2008, 11:41 pm EST

I’m going to download the fuck out of this album. Fuck Nine Inch Nails and fuck Metallica.

Seriously? | 7/9/2008, 12:30 am EST

Hey um…
Remember when Nine Inch Nails came out against the internet and pledged their undying affection the record companies?
Oh… wait.
So um, where the hell do you get off with “Fuck Nine Inch Nails” AFTER they gave us a FREE FUCKING ALBUM?

Josh | 7/9/2008, 1:09 am EST

The only reason you ingrates are saying “fuck Metallica” is because, god forbid, they don’t want to spend thousands upon thousands in the studio just to give you a god damn album for FREE!!

lars ulrich | 7/9/2008, 1:34 am EST

does metallica really even have any fans left???

really?

NotAFairPost | 7/9/2008, 2:30 am EST

I don’t generally find myself in the position to defend this band anymore, but…

The article failed to mention other more standard options for buying the album (the pricing for Death Magnetic WITHOUT access to the Mission: Metallica site – btw, how uncool is that name?):

There is also a reasonably prized 11.99 high quality (320) download, a 19.99 combo for digital download and CD, and the limited edition package fro 114.99. So in essence, they are basically telling people that want to buy the album, that they can also join this site ‘for free’ because they’ll give you 10 dollars for use in Metallica merchandise – a good deal for the hardcore fan.

Stop hating just because…

I will say this – NIN has a firmer grasp on how to make this type of deal cooler and more exciting, but maybe it has to do with each bands’ fanbase.

metallica is crap | 7/9/2008, 8:26 am EST

last album sucked and this album will suck. they’ve got alot of balls charging for this outrageous garbage. metallica sucks, and they keep showing me new and amazing ways to prove it. i used to be a fan and have just been beaten down by their jerk off attitudes and fuck the fans mentality. sad. they could have been the greatest band ever. Cliff would have never let it get to this point.

Sacrament | 7/9/2008, 9:05 am EST

Listen to real metal….use your money to buy a Lamb of God album.

Jim | 7/9/2008, 10:10 am EST

For a band that supposedly sucks so much, they sell out every stadium they ever play. Hmmmm…..

stupid Jim | 7/9/2008, 11:09 am EST

Selling out a stadium and being “good” are two very different things. Two words should sum it up,,,,,,Hannah Montana.

TIM | 7/9/2008, 11:34 am EST

Metallica is awful and has been for 10 yrs………they will sell out stadiums I agree there, but this is the same country that elected a retard twice!

J | 7/9/2008, 11:45 am EST

Keep listening to the new Lil Wayne then you morons.. .get off ‘Tallica’s case, GEEZ

Reality King | 7/9/2008, 12:05 pm EST

I want u to close your eyes…now picture your self playing music in front of thousands of people who love your music and feeling great about how cool your musician job is…now open your eyes and realize that you work in a cubicle and have a boring, uneventfull life. Yeah, that’s you Metallica-hater!

Electrocute | 7/9/2008, 12:08 pm EST

Metallica are more about the business aspect of the music industry than actually caring more about the music.Even though they are all multi-millionaires,they still find ways to milk their fans for more money.Just watch the monster video and listen to that moron lars…..

whatever | 7/9/2008, 12:18 pm EST

i just want to say that, yeah st. anger was awful, load and re-load are arguable, but this is a rick rubin album, that by itself deserves a listen or at least hope, the options i don’t really get i would love to have it on vinyl but i think i need to hear it before i buy it if you catch my drift, i always have an open ear, and wont judge till i hear it, or anything

Rajon Rondo | 7/9/2008, 1:31 pm EST

They are such whores, aren’t they? Charging that much for music is completely out of touch. If you are a high school kid who makes shit for money, and need to put gas in your car…you aren’t shelling out money for a crappy Metallica CD. This is why people use torrent sites.

Greed is good | 7/9/2008, 2:46 pm EST

Enough with the different packages and the collectible shit–just make sure the music is good.

Elvis knows best... | 7/9/2008, 3:25 pm EST

I say Metallica rocks. St Angers kind of sucked, but this will be great. ELvis knows best. Buy the best package you can afford.

Joker77 | 7/9/2008, 8:03 pm EST

How about they pay us not to laugh at this album.

Ryan | 7/9/2008, 9:47 pm EST

I seriously don’t get all the Metallica hate…yes, they made a huge mistake about the whole Napster thing like 8 years ago! You still steal music, it didn’t affect you at all, get over it, really. I’ll be the first person to say that St. Anger was a terrible, terrible album, but I still have hope for this album since they got Rubin to produce. By announcing you’re going to “get back at them” by stealing their new album that you weren’t going to buy or even really listen to is retarded and make you look really pathetic. And yes, I am aware of the irony of calling someone pathetic while arguing on the internet, but whatever…

Jud | 7/9/2008, 10:51 pm EST

I just heard an update for the upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica version…It’s going to cost $2,100. After the first level you end up stealing Dave Mustaine’s songs and claim that you wrote them. Level 4 you make the Black Album and gain a huge fan base that you will later abandon and try and gouge but we’ll get to that later. Level 5 you do an album with a Symphonic Orchastra. Level 6 your Bass Player leaves you cause realizes what wusses you are. Level 8 you begin your quest to take kids and your fans to court for downloading your music. Level 9 you put out a shit album St Anger. Level 10 you are found in a corner sulking. Level 11 you put out a documentary film that makes your entire band seem extremely lame. The Last level is the best….You charge outrageous prices for an album cause you know you’re only going to sell 10 of them. I can’t wait to get this game! Better start saving now…Luv Jud

Charlie Miller | 7/10/2008, 3:18 am EST

From the sounds of it, this is basically their last chance to win back the fans that loved em from the start. They’ve talked about how they’re returning to the 80’s style, I just wonder if they can even pull it off anymore.

Loved everything up to the black album, the supposed changed approach to this album and Rick Rubin have me excited, but then I got pumped for St. Anger only to feel like my favorite band took a big ol shit on me.

Sure do hope Metallica gets back to form, but I’m not holding my breath.

Seriously though.... | 7/10/2008, 7:40 am EST

Even Metallica knows all you’ve ever really needed was their first three albums…

You can’t shit three classics in a row and expect anything thereafter to be as good.

They’ve been treading water since 1985. All fans of metal know that.

All arguments ceased to be relevant when they released their video for ONE.

Blame MTV.

Peace out girl scouts!

dave | 7/10/2008, 8:35 am EST

of course, you could just buy the cd for $10 during the first week of release, as Best Buy and such will have it heavily discounted (as they do most new releases)

locoed | 7/11/2008, 11:51 pm EST

treading water? im sure they think that every time they gig, sold out shows are a bitch, wonder how they eat….

FIXXXER | 7/18/2008, 8:17 pm EST

All of you have no idea about fucking music, the reason metallica still sell out shows and are classed as one of the greatest bands eva is that they dont play the same old shit, every album is different, okay maybe its not all heavy as shit but who cares because it aint stale. i love the old shit i love the new shit an i love the shit in between! if u have a problem with what they are doing stop FUCKIN complaining, dont buy it instead go buy the new coldplay album an STICK IT UP YOUR FUCKEN ARSES!!!!!!!!!!!

lol wut | 8/1/2008, 7:48 am EST

“Even Metallica knows all you’ve ever really needed was their first three albums…

Are you insane? Treading water since 1985? Strange considering they released Master Of Puppets in 1986!

Also, ..And Justice For All is a fine album, if not their best. If its the production that puts you off, there is actually a remastered bootleg floating around the internet named “…And Justice For Jason”.

AJFA is just as good as (if not better than) KEA, RTL and MOP.

TBT | 8/20/2008, 6:03 pm EST

A bad Metallica album is any other bands wet dream.
