Kings of Leon Bring Sex, Fire on “Only By the Night”: A First Listen

7/8/08, 5:51 pm EST

The Smoking Section told you about the Kings of Leon’s boozy recording sessions for their new album, and today Rock Daily got an early listen to the Followill brothers’ September 23rd LP Only By the Night. The first indication this record is ready to kick some ass? It’s got a track called “Sex on Fire” that features kinky lyrics like “I know they’re watching” over twangy bent-note guitars and a thrumming bass groove. That’s just one of the 12 hotwired but extremely loose tracks that range from brawny Zep-style rockers (”Crawl”) to spooked-out blues ballads like “Cold Desert,” on which frontman Caleb howls “Jesus don’t love me/ No one ever carried my load.” The tentatively titled “Notion to Say” sounds like pure Nineties alt-rock with liquidy guitars reminiscent of Kurt Cobain’s riff from “Come as You Are” and a crystal-clear bassline that’s pure Pixies. Drummer Nathan goes to town on “Seventeen,” a song that dates back to their Aha Shake Heartbreak days and boasts a bunch of massive fills, but one of the better cuts has to be “Use Somebody,” a soaring power ballad that strangely enough sounds like a badass version of Journey’s “Faithfully.” Check out live YouTube of one of the new tracks after the jump.

Those guys are still around? That train has left the station. Give it up, boys. Mixing The Strokes and 3 Doors Down just doesn’t work.

hh | 7/8/2008, 6:40 pm EST

Counting down the days! Bout time we had some actual rock to listen to. I’m tired of all this experimental hippy shit floating around lately

Supertramp | 7/8/2008, 8:26 pm EST

Caleb has to rid himself of that goofy ass pumpkin pie haircut

steez | 7/8/2008, 8:36 pm EST

Woo hooo! I loooove every KOL album equally, can’t wait to hear this one.

Jack | 7/8/2008, 10:00 pm EST

3 Doors Down!! The Strokes (one album wonders if ever there was one).

For us older rockers, KoL are closer to Steppenwolf. Great riffs, dirty ass rock.

They’re one of the best live acts in the world, too.

sanavitis | 7/8/2008, 10:09 pm EST

KOL are the future of Rock and Roll.

miguel | 7/8/2008, 11:17 pm EST

I love KOL have all their CD’s and can’t wait for this new one! It’s going to be great! As far as people who don’t like them, who cares? Their loss and to each his own. I’d rather do something productive than argue pointlessly over bands. That being said, in my opinion everyone should give them a listen because they rock!

Super Sexily | 7/9/2008, 12:25 am EST

They make music for themselves and it gets them off and usually their fans too. What’s not sexy about that, it’s the only reason they play music anyway; to get themselves off. I have seen them in Chicago with Dylan and a small venue in Dayton both times front row, they got me off. Plus they have a hell of a pr/mngmt thing going for them and the best uhh..yeah

Jay | 7/9/2008, 2:15 am EST

The energy at their live show in Sydney was amazing, but mostly because everyone in the audience (or the front half at least) knew all the words.

I can’t imagine much of a reaction to a new KOL song played live, its a hard thing to get into first-listen.

IheartKOL | 7/9/2008, 9:17 am EST

KOL is a solid rock band. They’ve slowly built up their base and now people are really beginning to appreciate them….every record they’ve recorded has been great with each new one being better than the previous one….in short long LIVE the KINGS!!!!!

stupid Super Sexily | 7/9/2008, 10:50 am EST

“,,,,,,gets me off. Gets them off” Dude, what the hell are you talking about,,,,sounds more than just a little strange!!

Cheesecrop | 7/9/2008, 11:11 am EST

Liked the first two albums but didn’t care for the New Wave styles on the third. I’ll still be listening though.

mKa | 7/9/2008, 12:15 pm EST

Denton, you know nothing about music if you dont recognize how talented KOL is.

beefcake | 7/9/2008, 12:43 pm EST

it’s gonna be good. like (fist pounding) good good.

Bono | 7/9/2008, 2:04 pm EST

KOL opened for U2 in 2005 and intrigued me. They are going in the right direction.

fist in | 7/9/2008, 5:41 pm EST

this band is awesome. live (seen them 3 times) or on an album (own all three), they have kicked ass from start to finish. and back off the strokes, they’re just as good if not better.

KOL Fan | 7/10/2008, 3:59 pm EST

First KOL records were brilliant. Lets be honest, the last one was a disappointment with only a couple of good tunes. And Caleb’s still singing about the same ol’ shit, which is getting tired. I hope the next one will be good, but from what I’m reading and hearing, I’m not too sure. Who knows? Still a great band. The Strokes meets 3 Doors Down comparison s retarded.

jeremy | 7/10/2008, 7:45 pm EST

my third house and arizona are the best songs ever

yes | 7/11/2008, 2:58 am EST

Denton, go away please. you clearly know nothing about music. bye bye.

Matt | 7/11/2008, 8:16 pm EST

denton: That train has left the station? Because of the Times went platinum and they sell out arenas in minutes across Europe…Mixing the Strokes and 3 Doors Down? You’re an idiot.

big j | 7/13/2008, 4:00 pm EST

am i the only person who thinks they sound absolutely fuck all lyk the strokes?

Killer | 7/14/2008, 2:09 pm EST

Anybody who compares KOL to the Strokes or (good lord) 3 doors down has a hearing problem.

MikeLR | 7/16/2008, 12:10 am EST

I don’t know why everyone think that KOL are tightly leech The Strokes.. I don’t agree. Maybe some guitar sounds.. (By the way I mean only last album). But Guns and Roses guitars was detected by me, especially in the end of disc. Never mind, Kings are the great band!

.. | 7/17/2008, 8:24 am EST

i reckon because of the times was a better album than youth and young manhood and i can’t believe there are people who love kings of leon and hate the strokes! they don’t sound similar but there are some bands that just sort of go together in terms of music tastes.

Sam'quille | 7/23/2008, 9:39 pm EST

Well here it is The Strokes are fucking amazing live, Kings of Leon amazing live, 3 doors down I wouldn’t even fucking listen to them on the radio! Rock n Roll has been gone for a while of course there are few bands in between now and the classic rock days but KOL, The Strokes, Wolfmother The Raconteurs and so many more they are the bands that are bringing good music back, but unfortunately it’s not main stream or radio played so many people don’t know about them or shit about music! Main Stream is bull shit anyway and all these bands whether you dig or not are going to bring back rock n roll for are generation and it’s fucking beautiful! By the way “Super Sexily” I read you’re comment I was lucky enough to hang out with KOL after a show in Louisville and found out they were having a private party at a bar got to go, anyway the point is they do have great uggh yeah……….. bugar sugar!
Oh and while I’m on rolling stone website why the FUCK are the Jonas Brothers on the fucking cover WHY!

DC | 7/28/2008, 8:23 pm EST

Forget all the comparisons. The Strokes man??? Where were you for Youth & Young Manhood?? I thought that was supposed to be their Strokes ripoff.. Ooooh and there getting big now. I guess some ppl just know good music when they hear it- don’t get wrapped up in politics. KOL is one of the best bands out now. Go see them in concert!

steel-buns | 8/5/2008, 9:35 am EST

amazin. sounds nothing like madonna!

Philip | 8/6/2008, 2:35 am EST

The last album was a disapointment to anyone who was expecting that raw sound that had become a KOL trademark. I dislike the polished sound of because of the times. It sounds like they took too much from their tour with U2. They need to get back to what they did with youth and young…that album is so different and refreshing, as is shake heartbreak. Nathan is such an awesome drumer let him really do his thing!!!

TawnaBre | 8/12/2008, 9:14 pm EST

Great fuckin band! They keep coming with something unexpected and great everytime. Great music.

stagefour.com | 8/13/2008, 5:00 pm EST

best rock band around. The next Led-Zep. Just wait and see…

george | 9/4/2008, 10:46 am EST

denton ure a fucking idiot

Trench | 9/5/2008, 3:05 am EST

Amazing band, fucking brilliant concert – what an experience. Can’t wait for the new album, counting down the days now…
KOL are unlike anything else out there right now, legendary band and they’ll be around for ages to come.

Big G | 9/7/2008, 4:47 pm EST

I hate saying this but right now you guy’s over the pond have the two best bands in the world right now in Kings of Leon & the Raconteurs they are both awesome and if you havent been turning out to see em you best had whilst they’re still in their prime! In England and across Europe we just can’t get enough of them.So stop your petty squabeling and go out and buy tickets to go see em and forget Denton and kanye west and slim shady and fifty cent and britney and marylin? manson? and all that other fake shit and get with the program!!
Peace
G.

PG | 9/9/2008, 5:56 am EST

I have loved the kings since day one. Unreal. But I haven’t liked what i have seen so far of this album. They have lost the grit, honesty and edge that made them stand out from the crowd. They have shredded their southern roots for this journey meets bon jovi meets U2 meets cold play. I want to love it, I really do but the reality is if I heard this on the radio having not heard their previous albums I would think it was radio safe mainstream muck, I never thought I’d say it. This album will see them take off in america but plateau in europe. maybe when i hear the whole album i will understand the the songs i have heard so far in that context. get back to your roots boys…please!!

kevin | 9/10/2008, 5:39 pm EST

these guys do indeed kick ass!! Who else is like them? Please let me know because I will go and buy!

Declan | 9/11/2008, 7:57 am EST

The album has 2 standout tracks, the remainder sound like Bon Jovi. Sex on Fire is cliched rubbish. A massive let down. On another note Rolling Stone mag is pathetic, awarding Oasis – Falling Down 2 1/5 stars is ridiculous. They try something different and get slated for it, it’s their best song in years and RS fail to appreciate it as usual. Declan, Ireland.

Adge | 9/16/2008, 8:38 am EST

I’ve lıstened to the whole of Only By The Nıght many times now and I have to say that being a KOL fan sınce the glorıous days of Youth and Heartbreak, I feel lıke my heart ıs about to break! Big dissapoıntment. I always thought that this album was rushed and I just can’t beleıve how weak and ‘pretty-polıshed’ ıt ıs for a band that had so much raw energy. I could see this shıft to mass radıo audience musıc comıng wıth Because of the Tımes, and the desıgner haırcuts that came wıth ıt. I really hope thıs album grows on me, already bought my tıcket to see them (3rd time) in England later this year. Anyone agree??

jc | 9/17/2008, 10:20 pm EST

i got it – it’s decent but a let down after because of the times. I thought “manhattan” would sound epic in the studio and it sounds low fi.

armin | 9/20/2008, 5:14 am EST

Im a huge KOL fan but disapointing to me from what im used to hearing from KOL. Matt barely has any all out solos that hes known for. creativity is really lacking suprising as the kings are known for creativity. After listening to the album one time through i have no desire to listen to it again as for the other albums i would play on repeat for months, lyrics on closer and 17 are really poor, Revelry sounded promising but then just started sounding to country and lyricly boring, how did be somebody even make it on the album?
i think main problem was lyrics as it doesnt seem caleb took chances and maybe not enough time to write something more unique/clever?
enough bashing i did like manhattan, crawl was really rocking and sex on fire was pretty creative

J-boy | 9/21/2008, 2:22 pm EST

the difference between you all and me is i take each album for its own worth and dont waste my time comparing the albums to each other because thats a pointless waste of time. and the reason why you dont like the album is because of your own high expectations and what you think the music should be instead of appreciating it for what it is. this album is brilliant, and it makes me laugh how people say..oh i listened to the album once and that was it. its like you people look for reasons to be dissapointed by music instead of trying to relate to it. sad sad sad. KOL are a fantastic band, and any real fans know this is a quality record.

AC | 9/22/2008, 10:24 pm EST

I think KOL is the best rock band out today by far!! No one comes close to their live performances…pure passion! That said, Only by the Night has let me down. Just got through the first listen and it feel like that energy and passion has dwindled. I’m hoping it gets better as i listen to it again.. :(

AC | 9/22/2008, 10:40 pm EST

Ok wait…I like it more the second time listening to it! KOL is one of the best bands EVER!!!!! NO COMPARISONS!!!

cjames | 9/23/2008, 2:36 am EST

J-Boy. taking each album as a seperate entity does not help the fact that this album is just not very good. The reason people compare it to the past records is that the past records were. there are couple good tracks for sure, but overall this is a pretty bland affair. Nobody’s perfect. it’s over-produced and plodding.

Aaron | 9/23/2008, 7:50 pm EST

Amazing band, amazing album. Caleb has the best vocals of any band at present. Trust the yanks to not even notice talent on their doorstep.

superman | 9/24/2008, 9:13 am EST

never heard of KOL before their recent snl performance and they blew me away. Gonna go buy all their albums and listen to them. Im loaded so money doesnt matter to me.

marlena | 9/27/2008, 3:45 pm EST

I really like this album, and it’s lame that not many are seeing the artistic risk and movement. I think that maybe you all need to just relax and realize that if they made every album sound exactly the same, you’d be really bored.

Thank you KINGS of Leon. For bringing creativity and a nuance to this album.

Joe | 10/31/2008, 6:32 am EST

I think it is funny that some are merely trying to play this off as the Kings simply “choosing a new musical direction” and proclaiming all the detractors to be fools stuck in some preconceived notion of how they should sound. I will not lie, I like their old sound better. I also liked when they didn’t dress like wannabe indie hipsters. All these changes seem to have taken place in a very short time. The only reasonable explanation is that someone has a master plan for how they should look and sound, and unfortunately it isn’t the Kings. They serve as the perfect example of how commercialization and the industry can sap whatever individuality and creativity people actually have.

Lee | 5/21/2009, 8:04 am EST

I love the KOL… I love their lyrics !
