Jack White Pens Poem for Detroit

7/7/08, 9:30 am EST

Following comments he made to Rolling Stone about Detroit’s “super-negative” music scene, the White Stripes/RaconteursJack White has penned an ode about his hometown so that his feelings about Detroit aren’t misinterpreted. White moved to Nashville in 2006, feeling he “couldn’t breathe” anymore in the Motor City music scene and not because of the city itself or its citizens. “The following poem is the Detroit from my mind. The Detroit that is in my heart. The home that encapsulates and envelops those who are truly blessed with the experience of living within its boundaries,” White says in the introduction. Check out the ode, which White wrote for the Detroit Free Press, here.

“I don’t think John Mayer is any better that Jack on guitar.”

This is simply untrue. It’s not a matter of opinion, or personal taste. It’s baldly false.

I probably prefer the White Stripes’ music to Mayers, but to even suggest White is on a par with Mayer is snicker-into-your-hand ridiculous.

John Mayer is a watered down, frat rock, corporate mouthpiece. Jack White is a negative creep pretending to be a saint. Your rock stars are transparent phoneys. Neil Young is a gifted songwriter. There’s a big difference. Comparing John to Jack is like arguing Pepsi over Coke. They’re the same bastardized product with different packaging. Neither one is actually good for you.

Jack white has a bad ass persona about him, John Mayer on the other hand makes bubblegum pop music for pre-teen girls.

Jack Rules. John is a tottal putz. This comes to you from one of your own. John is for 14 year old girls.

I read more of a pining for innocence lost than any deep love of Detroit in that poem. I, unfortunately, am also deeply unqualified to comment on poetry. I do love Detroit, and I liked the poem. Fame and fortune have not taken the desire out of him to be the tempremental artist. It must be genuine, he was that way when he was just playing for beer.

John Mayer does not have anything on Jack White

I don’t think John Mayer is any better that Jack on guitar. Besides aren’t they both singer song writers? They ain’t trying to be Eric Claptons or someone.

John Mayer can blow the doors off of Jack White on the guitar anyday. John has much more sex appeal also, we in the gay community are huge fans of John, Jack White, er, no.

I’ve been to Detroit, it’s like Iraq with less charm……..

To those of who feel the need to put him down, I encourage you to let us know exactly what the hell you’ve done to contribute to the music world lately. You aren’t qualified to mow his Nashville lawn.

John, is cleansing himself with this poem for Detroit, sometimes it just time to let go of all the bad feelings inside and to just come clean so to speak.

Courageous Dream’s Concern, could have 3 different meanings, it may heal, help and hurt.

Poor Jack White | 7/7/2008, 5:45 pm EST

He doesn’t hate Detroit, just everybody he’s ever known there. Now he thinks he’s Bob Dylan. What’s even worse is Bob Dylan also thinks he’s Bob Dylan. Lament on that for a minute. In the immortal words of Frank Zappa: Shut Up And Play Your Guitar! Pathetic. Didn’t Corey Haim run the same apology ad in Variety? Try this on for size, appreciate the support you’ve always had in your hometown and you won’t have to apologize for anything. This is embarrassing.

all is forgiven/forgotten/whatever if we get a couple shows at the Masonic Temple! Detroit was skipped on the last tour. Come back, Jack and Meg, we miss you!

Exclusive: Detroit has no interest in what Jack White thinks!

Why do people (and media outlets) continue to carry water for Jack White? OK Jack - Detroit loves you too. There…feel better? Less guilty feelings now? …Now go get on with your life.

Wake up Brian McCollum and all you sheepish “Detroit Music Scene” people - Jack White needs Detroit much more that Detroit needs Jack White.

Stop falling for the Jack White sizzle and go out and find some real Detroit Musical MEAT!

My poem for Jack White:

Thanks for a few catchy rhymes and riffs
You had a dream and saw it through
Hometown boy makes it big!
Oh how Detroit was proud of you!

He walked on Vernor Hwy
He rode the Baker bus
But that is in the past, now history
So stop with all this Jack White fuss

You write a poem, oh how very quaint
You drop some place names we all know
Some think you’re Detroit’s patron saint
I think it’s time to end the show

This guy continues to amaze me. Read the poem. Wow. And I hate poetry. J. W., his bands and music have given me hope that there is still some great awesome talent out there.
