Roger Daltrey Reveals Flaming Lips, Pearl Jam’s Plans for The Who’s Rock Honors

7/7/08, 2:29 pm EST

This Saturday Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, the Flaming Lips, Incubus and Tenacious D will play tribute to the Who at VH1’s annual Rock Honors concert in Los Angeles. The Who will close out the night with a 40-minute set that may include the first live performance of The Who By Numbers track “Slip Kid” since 1976, though you may have to actually be at the venue to hear it. “What they use on the TV will probably be the same old stuff,” laments Roger Daltrey. “They’ll probably just show ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again,’ ‘Baba O’Riley’ and ‘Who are You?’” Daltrey also revealed the Flaming Lips are working up a Tommy medley and Pearl Jam will likely play “Love Reign O’er Me.” “It’s gonna be weird having them play Who songs while we’re there,” says Daltrey.

Proceeds from the show are going to multiple charities, including the Teenager Cancer Trust — an organization Daltrey has been involved with for years that builds hospital wards for teenagers with cancer. “We have found by providing an environment where teenagers can be together sharing their illnesses and experiences we are getting between a 15 and 20 percent improvement on the medicine,” Daltrey says. “It’s strictly a psychological effect.” To raise more money for the TCT, Daltrey and Volkswagen are raffling off a 1965 VW van customized with the Who’s logo and signed by Daltrey and Townshend. 5£ submissions are accepted until tomorrow. stuporfly | 7/7/2008, 3:50 pm EST

Can’t wait to hear what the Flaming Lips come up with.

Brendan P. Riley | 7/7/2008, 4:42 pm EST

We all know that Ed Ved is a major Who fan, so if they wanted to be really killer cool PJ should work up something truly tasty, like Join Together>The Relay>I Can See For Miles. I imagine that Flaming Lips, being theatrical as they are, will do something like A Quick One or Mary Anne with the Shaky Hands>Glow Girl.

edward van halen on bass? we’ve already got one guitar god in the band. what the hell, get Flea on Bass and Dave Grohl on Drums, that would be an insane Who album.

boatman | 7/7/2008, 9:53 pm EST

The Who are fantastic!

miguelguitars | 7/7/2008, 11:10 pm EST

I never understood the appeal of The Who, I founf bands like Hermans Hermits and The Dave Clark Five superior really. And in my old age honestly I prefer to listen to lighter sounds like John Mayer, Fergie, and Celine Dion…….

mrpink-o | 7/7/2008, 11:44 pm EST

boy miguel guitars … you are old … stick with what you listen to … you obviously couldn’t understand the “appeal” of the who, and never will … i hope you “founf” you’re dave clark five records.

Tino | 7/8/2008, 12:19 am EST

“And in my old age honestly I prefer to listen to lighter sounds like John Mayer, Fergie, and Celine Dion”

This show will be EPIC and I can’t wait till it airs.

brian | 7/8/2008, 6:21 am EST

no one is better then the who, except maybe pink floyd. the who through out the years they always had something different to bring and even there last cd is good. yea the band is old and shoulda hung it up years ago. but fuck when ya got a drummer like zak starkey on drums you just dont die. i’ve never seen the who live and come saturday i get to along with my fav band PEARL JAM and some other really good bands

Scott Smallwood | 7/8/2008, 8:49 am EST

I saw The Who in 1971 live .That was definetly the best live show I’ve ever seen&there were many awsome live shows in the 60’s&70’s, so I can’t see how anyone can prefer Celine Dion or Hreman’s Hermits over The Who.Give me a break.I guess there’s no accounting for superb musical taste these days.

John Bonham | 7/8/2008, 9:58 am EST

I prefer Celine Dion, too.

Sean Kilkelly | 7/8/2008, 1:17 pm EST

That would be great if they aired this song on t.v. Great song!

Swanaay1 | 7/8/2008, 4:35 pm EST

Fergie……. She looka like-a man.

Ohhhweeee! Ed Ved, Wayne Coyne and The Who. Holy Crap on a Stick!

Miguel Guitars. You’ve obviously sold out and turned into a tasteless drone. Why even bother commenting on this if you clump the likes of Canadia Dion and Fergi “shaking my boobs and dancing like a whore for a 12 year old audience is a lil inappropriet” from Black Eyed Peas with any credible musical talent only exacerbates your aweful taste.

Paul | 7/9/2008, 8:03 am EST

Roger is right. The uncreative wankers at VH1 will stick to the same tried and true, not giving credit to the Who’s real fans that would love to hear Slip Kid. Personally I don’t need to see WGFA for the 7 billionth time. Probably have to go to Youtube to see the stuff off the beaten path.

Pheniafilms | 7/9/2008, 12:33 pm EST

Hope that the entire event including the Whos entire performance will be availible on a Future DVD Release..
im thrilled to hear the Who will be performing Slip Kid and hope the next Who album will be around shortly there after..”No Easy Way To be Free”

Luis | 7/9/2008, 5:40 pm EST

Uh! It is great if they play “Slip Kid” but it will be greater if they play some never before or rarely play songs like “Goin Mobile”, “Song is Over”, “Naked Eye”, “How Many Friends”, “In a Hand or a Face”, “I can see for Miles”, “Sunrise” “Music Must Change”, “Cousin Kevin” or “Trick of the Light”……..

Suzi in California | 7/9/2008, 5:46 pm EST

SQUEEZE BOX!

artficialred | 7/9/2008, 5:49 pm EST

The Who are okay, but they can’t touch Led Zeppelin, the REAL greatest rock band EVER!!!!!

josh | 7/10/2008, 1:27 am EST

sorry, but the who ARE superior to the likes of the dave clark five, hermins hermits, and led zeppelin.

but hey, everyone’s entitled to their own opinions.

live and let live.

Jake | 7/10/2008, 1:39 am EST

They’re not gonna play trick of the light. That was one of Entwistle’s songs. It would be like them playing My Wife or Boris the Spider…not gonna happen!

Anonymous | 7/10/2008, 11:58 am EST

OMG, whoever said they want The Who to play “Naked Eye”, I TOTALLY agree. The Who makes that song freaking epic. I think I would absolutely die if they played it. :D

cintenta | 7/10/2008, 1:44 pm EST

miguelguitars is obvious using the computer at the Napa State Mental Facility. Why are commenting You are obviously not a fan of rock and roll. This is a forum for rock fans. How dare you compare those artists to The Who.
Keith Moon, Daltry, Townsend and Entwistle. There will never be another like them.

marksd13 | 7/10/2008, 5:34 pm EST

the who 2 is still better live then any other whole group out there……………….

keith moon | 7/10/2008, 9:23 pm EST

Hermans F**kin Hermits!
OMG! I cant stop laughing!
Long live the Who and Rock!

Pat Grant | 7/12/2008, 12:30 pm EST

I am disappointed to find out the set list is only 40 minutes. For The Who these days it takes about that long to warm up. And to think that TV will cut out album tracks and show only the hits is equally disappointing. I think I’ll enjoy Sunday night’s program more. But anyway – here’s my wish list set:
The Real Me, 5:15, Pure And Easy, Overture (from Tommy), Pinball Wizard, Black Widow’s Eyes, Imagine A Man, You Better You Bet, Won’t Get Fooled Again!!! let’s be realistic – they’re going to play it anyway.
