Joy Division’s Ian Curtis’ Gravestone Stolen

7/3/08, 9:10 am EST

The gravestone of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis has reportedly been stolen from the singer’s burial spot at the Macclesfield Cemetery in the U.K. Detectives say the gravestone was snatched sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. “There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft,” a police spokesman said. The gravestone was inscribed with the words “Ian Curtis 18-5-80″ and “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” the title of Joy Division’s biggest hit. Detectives are asking that anyone with information about the theft to contact them. Ian Curtis committed suicide in May 1980, right before the band was due to come to the U.S. for a tour.

Bash the thief over the head with the gravestone once he gets caught and bury him in a grave.

i wish this idiot a horrible and painful death

kliff | 7/3/2008, 7:09 pm EST

i don’t think ian would care even if he were alive. :)

Greta | 7/4/2008, 5:31 am EST

I just wonder what’s the use of this stone for the person who stole it. Apparently it can not be sold on ebay, so maybe it will be a decoration item for his/her living room/kitchen/bedroom? I also wonder how this person would feel if someone snatched a gravestone of a person very dear to him. Stealing this won’t make you the biggest fan of Joy Division and Ian Curtis – it just makes you seem so sad and pathetic.

jeffrey gusek | 7/4/2008, 12:39 pm EST

bet it was the killers

daMN | 7/4/2008, 4:29 pm EST

FUCK this shit!! what happened?

ian curtis doesn’t deserved that

Lesa | 7/5/2008, 1:59 pm EST

This is a horribly disrespectful thing to do and makes me very sad. This idiot probably thinks what they did is really cool and makes them the biggest fan. If they were really such a huge Joy Division fan they would not have disrespected the family and friends of Ian Curtis by stealing something very dear to them.

This idiot will surely be caught because they most definitely will tell someone that has a conscience and be turned in.

My worst fear however is that they were paid by someone very wealthy to do this and it will never be seen again. This happens with art all the time.

texas tony | 7/5/2008, 2:52 pm EST

I think that is fuckin cool, buy another one, I am surprised it took this long to have it stolen, gose to show he was a bad motherfucker, I wish i was regared so as to have my shit taken!!!!!!!

THX-1138 | 7/5/2008, 3:06 pm EST

Despite being distasteful and reprehensible on all conceivable levels, it does prove one thing: peoples’ James Dean-esque obsession with Ian Curtis has not diminished nary a bit. Quite the contrary- it’s only gotten stronger with the passage of time, especially in the last year with the release of Control. That film has introduced several friends of mine to Joy Division and even those who knew about Ian Curtis and Joy Division have a new found respect for what they managed to accomplish in Post-punk England.

Ray | 7/6/2008, 1:35 am EST

Another example why cremation is the way to go.

Rich N. | 7/6/2008, 11:45 am EST

That’s awful…….he suffered enough torment in life, and now in death too? Find this scumbag and put him away. RIP Ian, your music lives on here with me.

Rupert Murdoch | 7/6/2008, 10:48 pm EST

He should’ve done what I did: sell your soul to the Great Lord Satan and live forever. Nobody takin’ MY fuckin gravestone.

seamus | 7/7/2008, 12:49 am EST

thats so fucking disrespectful…you don’t do that to anyone…especially such a legend!!!!

RIP IAN…..if it weren’t for your music i wouldn’t be the musician i am.

Joe | 7/7/2008, 8:30 pm EST

Ian Curtis must be rolling over in his grave.

Liam | 7/10/2008, 7:31 am EST

Actually Ray, Ian Curtis was cremated. It is possible to bury ashes apparently

SARE X | 7/16/2008, 5:50 pm EST

It takes the piss the fuckin scruffy bastards need a lampin.

Gareth | 10/24/2008, 5:32 pm EST

That’s pretty sad. I guess there’s a big downside to renewed interest in the band. It’s a remarkable testament to JD’s fan base that noting like this has happened before. Too bad at least one of their newer fans lacks that integrity.

michael | 11/8/2008, 5:09 pm EST

lol i like jeffry gusek’s response

Adam | 12/23/2008, 3:17 pm EST

I just wander how can you be so sick to steal sth like that?! How can a man show such a lack of respect?!

1989 Death Rocker | 3/13/2009, 2:22 am EST

That was very disrespectful, but look at the world we live it. I used to have a human skull next to my bed, with a candle melted on top. My brother stole it from Bio Lab he said. Come to find out, the person’s skull had a huge gun shot hole it the side of his head. I SWEAR IT’S SPIRIT HAUNTED ME! I later traded it for a Sisters of Mercy Bootleg. RIP

Millie | 5/17/2009, 9:31 am EST

Absolutly ridiculous! Ian was a normal reagular but talanted guy. He had a mum, dad, sister, wife etc. And he was someones world, and to steal his grave is sick!!

Joy's joy | 7/10/2009, 1:06 am EST

Canterbury Gent | 7/10/2009, 5:08 pm EST

There are 66 days between April 30th and July 4th of every celebrated year. 3 is represented as a triangle and multiplied to achieve greater strength as 33, or 333. 333 + 333 equals 666. (3+3) + (3+3) + (3+3) = 666, July carries number 3, plus on the third day. Research this info, perhaps the Masons robbed him from his grave? R.I.P. Ian…

Canterbury Gent | 7/12/2009, 5:57 am EST

CORRECTION: Gravestone probably stolen on June 30th of 2008, demonstrating the power of (333), Following month is July, the 7th month of the year. “One of the most sacred of all the numbers…the Invisible Centre, the Spirit of everything”, quoted by Van Buren. Happy Birthday Ian, R.I.P.
