At “Guitar Hero” Launch, Aerosmith Say They’re Headed to the Studio

6/30/08, 4:41 pm EST

Aerosmith took the stage at New York’s Hard Rock Café on Friday, not to play music, but to announce the launch of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the latest installment of the massively popular game and the first to be built around a single band. “It feels weird to be up here without a guitar,” quipped guitarist Joe Perry, who later posed with the small plastic axe that comes with the game. Guests at the Hard Rock got a chance to try out the new edition, which includes hits like “Love in an Elevator” and “Dream On,” as well as more obscure tracks like “Combination” and songs by artists Aerosmith has played with, including Run DMC and Joan Jett.

After the press conference, band members told Rolling Stone how they spent weeks performing their songs in motion-detecting suits so that the game could recreate the real experience of an Aerosmith show. “I did six, seven hours a day for two weeks,” says frontman Steven Tyler, who attended the event three days after leaving a rehab facility where he was treated for addiction to sleeping pills. “I managed to pull all the moves that we do all night, with Joe and my arm around him so they could get those things that are really what Aerosmith is.” The band also had to re-record several of the songs, since their labels, Geffen and Columbia, couldn’t locate the master tapes. “The record companies play games — it’s sad,” says Tyler. “It just goes on and on. We’re looking forward to the new millennium.”

The band also talked about returning to the studio to work on their first album since 2004’s Honkin’ on Bobo. “I’m interested to get back in the studio — I feel rejuvenated,” says Perry, who is recovering from a leg injury. “Some time in the late summer, early fall we’ll get back in there and start putting it together.” And maybe release it on a future version of Guitar Hero? “Why not? That’s a great way to do it.”

Anyone that says Aerosmith is not an excellent choice for Guitar Hero is clearly of minimal intellegence. They are a “guitar band.” They have 4 decades of classic songs to choose from. They are legends and deserve better than mindless RATM fans whose hero has writers block after a few midlevel albums.

Aerosmith was the perfect choice! True Zeppelin and the Stones and etc. are great but Aerosmith stands the test of time and are a wiser choice for marketing. The are still together unlike zeppelin, can still put on a show without throwing out a hip unlike the stones, and they are still producing albums that people acctually want to listen too unlike both. Many mentioned bands like rage and guns….those bands looked up to aerosmith. Slash modeled himself and after and idolized joe perry and brad whitford. Further more I don’t see rolling stones being a good choice at all it would be an way too easy game. As an acctually guitarist I find that aerosmiths music is much more difficult than that of the stones or rage. Now zeppelin and guns yes but agin they are not even together. Aerosmith of all bands mentioned has the widest variety in of songs in their catalog so it won’t feel like your playing the same thing over and over and the makers of the game mentioned this as reason for choosing Aerosmith. Also I would like to point out that I too belived that kids should pick up a real guitar instead but from experience with my friends this game is infact getting them to do just that as aerosmith themselves did throughout the 70’s so if you step back and look it’s a very good thing. Also kids that play this may also further explore aerosmith aswell as others in the classic rock genre and so on which I think will do wonders to our culture’s current musical taste. As a final note this game should be modeled after a deserving guitar god and as a experienced musician I would place joe perry in the top 5 and if you include versitily I personally hold him tied at # 1 with slash. Joe perry was the reason many kids picked up a guitar in the 70’s and 80’s including many guitarist of the bands most mentioned and I know this for a fact. The three most deserving in that case page who is from a broken band, richards who is like the living dead and who’s music is not as difficult as it was revolutionary and joe perry who is a legend and a revolutionary and can still kick ass! So get off Aerosmiths case and when your a rock ledgend and have our own video game after almost 40 years of rocking then you can all bitch till then shut the fuck up! Can’t wait to see what they come up with on the new album! Rock on!

Sorry but this is completely retarded… A very good one to choose would be Metallica… One, Nothing Else Matters are both fairly easy songs to play on REAL GUITAR (I play a black stratocaster) and songs like Master of Puppets, or even Ride the Lightning, are great songs for harder levels… That’s just my opinion…And metallica wouldn’t be too hard to get either as they aren’t AS known as say Aerosmith or Iron Maiden… But they bought the rights to a movie (Johnny got his gun) for the “One” video so…just a brainstorm… Queens Of The Stone Age would be a good choice too… Medication is easy… 3’s and 7’s is very hard… burn the witch is easy etc.

The timing for this couldn’t be worse for the Guitar Hero franchise, and Aerosmith.  Steven Tyler is about to be exposed as a world-class addict, even though he has been trying to fool everyone for some time. I have no doubt that when Permanent Vacation and Pump were released, He was on the straight and narrow. However, I have a feeling that for 10 years or so he has been dabbling in it, and over the last 5 years it seems to me he has jumped into the waters of Lethe with both feet. Truly a great talent, and I hope he can really clean it up. But something tells me a new album and tour will spiral him down to the bottom.

Clown Prince of Crime | 7/4/2008, 2:31 pm EST

I f*cking hate Guitar Hero, and I don’t have enough time to go into why.

But, Aerosmith? Come on…They should at least do Guitar Hero editions of: Pearl Jam, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Rage…or Zeppelin?

Jesus Christ at least make it interesting with good bands.

Matt makes the best point of all about various rock bands who SHOULD have their own version of this game. In the early 90’s, U2 scrapped a video game idea with SEGA CD where you could mix your own versions of U2 songs and videos. I think a more comprehensive version of a band video game, not limited to just playing their songs, would be a great idea. Maybe something where you could design a tour, manage the band, merchandising, press conferences, members having controversy off stage, studio conflicts, doing remixes of songs and videos, wardrobe, etc etc etc…Having their WHOLE catalog available would be awesome. How cool would it be to design setlists for a band and then watch (and play in) your dream concert? my choice for something like that would be U2. But all the bands Matt listed would be worthy of a Guitar Hero special edition.

Messy Fingers | 7/1/2008, 4:06 pm EST

Im going to have to defend this game from everyone that is picking on people that play it and saying “pick up a guitar”. Now yes the truth buying a real guitar is a great idea. For me my fiance pick up the 3rd game for me and I wanted to see what all the fuss is about and to tell you the truth after playing it for a while I kept getting that urge to go out and buy a real guitar. Now for me at the time I was recently laid off from a crappy company that would rather outsource there “graphic design work” but im telling you when money isn’t a problem im going to buy a guitar and try to learn it. This game at times really does make you feel like your shredding, the way you hold your hand around the neck and move up and down, it really feels the way I imagine a guitar would feel If I could play one. What im trying to say is this could be something that will get young kids interested in playing instruments. I think its going to help out in the end.

i think their should be a GH: the mars volta

lets see someone do the song cassandra gemini on expert….33 min of hand cramps

NOBODY BETTER!

the Grand Wazoo | 7/1/2008, 2:08 pm EST

What they need is a Zappa Guitar Hero

Skippy | 7/1/2008, 1:14 pm EST

Hey guys, did you hear the rumor that Amy Winehouse is coming out with her own Guitar Hero game? The package will include a plastic guitar as well as plastic hyperdermic needles and plastic bong. As Amy you’ll have to pretend to get high then belt out the songs afterward. Damn, I can’t wait till that one comes out.

Rockstar70 | 7/1/2008, 12:30 pm EST

Aerosmith states in their BIO-WALK THIS WAY that they own the Columbia masters from the 70’s(one of a few artists that have that). So if anyone has “lost” the masters it is Aerosmith. Plus if this is true then how are future copies of the Aerosmith catalog going to be made???

Jungleland | 7/1/2008, 7:42 am EST

Pick up a REAL guitar!

FJ | 7/1/2008, 7:42 am EST

Matt, how much do you think the Stones would want to do that? Hours and hours of their time - they usually get paid crazy money for a concert, let alone dozens of concerts worth of time just for a video game.

I think Aerosmith is a better band than AC/DC but I also think they have wider commercial appeal, which is part of the trick when focusing a video game on only one band. As for Led Zeppelin, they’re not really “reunited” officially; do you think you could get them into the studio for days, to play for hours, for a video game - same problem as with the stones; too much $$ woudl be required. Not saying Aerosmith didn’t cash in big with this but they are not quite as expensive a ticket as the Stones or LZ.

brock_vond | 6/30/2008, 9:19 pm EST

I’m waiting for Guitar Hero: Run-DMC.

Or better yet .. they should release a game with two turntables, where the user cuts n’ scratches ….

naw … kids play too many video games as it is … for the time put in to learning “last child” on expert, they could have learned to actually play the song on a real guitar.

Tino | 6/30/2008, 8:34 pm EST

I thought the album was a little farther along, but at least they’re feeling good about it.

Ray | 6/30/2008, 8:19 pm EST

Damn, could Tyler look much older (or worse)?

Matt | 6/30/2008, 7:21 pm EST

Of all the bands to make a Guitar Hero game about, why Aerosmith? What about the Stones? AC/DC? Zeppelin? The Who? Don’t get me wrong, Aerosmith kicks ass, but do they kick ass more than these guys???

Craig | 6/30/2008, 6:41 pm EST

The label that lost the masters isn’t Geffen; it’s Columbia.

JP | 6/30/2008, 6:04 pm EST

I can’t wait to get Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. This game is going to be full of great rock songs from one of the best rock bands of all time.

I revisited “Just Push Play” recently and discovered what a daring album that was. Not everything worked, but between that album and “Honkin’ On Bobo”. Aerosmith is still a band that not content on resting on past successes.

Shelby | 6/30/2008, 5:47 pm EST

I love you Steven baby!
