Prince Sues Norwegian Record Label Over Covers Album

6/26/08, 3:19 pm EST

Having already unleashed his legal fury on his own fans, Prince and his Paisley Park lawyers are suing a Norway record company for releasing a 5-CD cover album of the Purple One’s songs. Shockadelica, an 81-track album featuring all Norwegian artists, already released its run of 5,000 copies when the label, C + C Records, sent a copy to Prince as a goodwill gesture. Instead, Prince’s legal team swiftly requested that Shockadelica be pulled and all copies destroyed. All artists involved with the album weren’t paid for their contribution, and Shockadelica is, for the moment, still available online. To exacerbate matters, one band called Frost has made their cover of “Sex Shooter” available as a free download on their website. The whole thing seems quite hypocritical of Prince, as the Coachella audience can attest Minneapolis’ favorite son has no problem with borrowing other people’s songs.

Janne and Willy you’re out of your mind and obviously don’t know anything about music. These covers are some of the best I’ve ever hearD. So many times I’ve heard a reinterpretation of a beloved song and moaned at the lack of unique perspective but in Shockadelica the majority of the collection is filled with fresh renditions that give the jaded ears of of a long time Prince fan something to celebrate. Well done Christer Falck.

I listened to the 5 cds last night - I’d been putting it off for some time, dreading it. I’m a big fan of Prince (up until the early 90s at least…). My fears about the album was justified - it is mostly an embarrassment. There is maybe a handful of OK versions on there, otherwise a lot of crap. What’s the point in making cover versions if you can’t bring anything new and interesting to the songs? And it takes A LOT to add something new and interesting to Prince’s already brilliant stuff.

That Norwegian record probably sucks…
Cant find 81 good artist in No-Way.. maybe 5..

I’m no longer buying prince records, I rather download them from torrents, If this is the way he treats his fan. You should do as Bowie, which doesn’t care about cover or bootlegs as long as they are fan-based and royalty-free. Actually I delete prince songs from my playlist.
Christer Falch is well known in Norway as a former robinson reality winner and later robinson-host, Prince should be grateful to have such a outspoken fan.

Hooray, yet another example of Norwegian journalism at its finest. Why would the real Christer Falck post a comment on an Internet article, to sort out facts from fiction? Why didn’t he just contact the author of the article, or an editor of some sort? Well, he probably would. I smell desperate Norwegian journalists/bloggers.

PS.: Christer, please contact Anne Grosvold for some English lessons.

Hi, I’m the one releasing Shockadelica”.
Just want to comment on a couple of things here.
We are not sued by Prince or his management. We have been contacted by Prince’s publishers Universal Publishing, USA, who wrote a letter where they wanted us to send the rest of the cd’s to them for potential destruction.
My label, C+C Records, are under the impression that we’re allowed to releasde the covers, since we already had gotten a response from Universal Publishong, Sweden, where they indicated that “no-one can stop straight covers”. That’s why we released the tributealbum. This is a non-profit release.
We’re not in it for the money. We just wanted to salute the guy…

LOL - most of the time, he looks more like Princess than anything ‘macho’.

i love prince.
it’s a mystery how he can be so effeminate and yet so macho.
and his movies make me laugh.

The copyright law says that if you pay your mechanical license fees to Harry Fox Agency (who manage the transaction on behalf of the artist’s publishing company), you can cover any published song that you want and make it available as a CD or download (for about 10 cents per song per cd/download). Prince has chosen to publish the songs and therefore make them available to cover and release.

Prince is a little man… that’s all he’ll ever be.

Buzzardoo | 6/27/2008, 11:38 am EST

Good point–that guy does tons of covers…and is he always sending a check to Sly Stone???

Aaron | 6/27/2008, 11:22 am EST

Prince is the coolest of all the living legends, he still rock’s and he best music is still relevant today (just listen to “Sign O’ The Times”) but he needs to loosen up a little bit.

Prince just give us another complete free album.

I have both a heart and sense of melody and Prince’s version DID NOT “shred the crap out of the original.”

grayson | 6/27/2008, 10:42 am EST

the man is a genius. period. i have no argument with whatever he does.

alt-rokkr | 6/27/2008, 10:12 am EST

well, Prince is Prince, he can do whatever the hell he wants.

Not relevant? Umm, have you heard the song “Black Sweat”? Haven’t heard such a steamy, gutful r’n'b song like that in all of the 2000’s uptil that song came out.

I comprehend Prince’s viewpoint. His songs just don’t sound good when covered by other artist. And the other way around? Remember that time when he played “Best Of You” by the Foos? Well, anyone with a heart and sense of melody will say that Prince’s version shredded the crap out of the original. ( It’s a respectable song, but you fall alseep half way through it the way the Foos do it… lifeless. )

Eat your pancakes Charlie Murphy.

Nathan | 6/26/2008, 7:26 pm EST

Prince hasn’t been relevant since the 80s… He continues to remind everyone what a tool he really is.

Bobby K | 6/26/2008, 6:51 pm EST

Prince rules!

wow | 6/26/2008, 4:43 pm EST

only sell outs sue their fans and admirers.
