Phish Reunion? Mike Gordon Is “Optimistic,” Says Band Met With Lillywhite

6/26/08, 1:06 pm EST

Last month, Trey Anastasio set off a flurry of Phish mania when he told Rolling Stone, “At this point in time I would give my left nut to play ['You Enjoy Myself'] five times in a row every day.” Last week speculation that one of the world’s biggest jam bands — who split in 2004 — would reunite was stoked by rumors that Steve Lillywhite has been tapped to record a new Phish disc (he produced their 1996 album Billy Breathes). So we checked in with Phish bassist Mike Gordon — whose solo disc, The Green Sparrow, hits stores August 5th and features collaborations with Anastasio and Phish keyboardist Page McConnell — to see what’s true. “The band has had a couple of dinners and they’ve just been great,” Gordon tells Rolling Stone. “We’re all just excited about the idea of doing something sometime. I can’t guarantee it, but I’m optimistic.”

As for Lillywhite, Gordon says, “We talked to him, actually. [The rumor] stemmed from reality. We love Steve Lillywhite. He would bring out some great things in us. But we don’t have specific plans to work with him. It was an idea and hopefully it’s something that if we rev things up, it could happen some day. We don’t know if we would tour first or make an album first. We have no idea.”

This afternoon, McConnell added his two cents in a post on Phish’s Website. “The prospect of Phish reuniting is something I consider very seriously, and I think about it a lot,” he writes, noting that all four bandmates are busy with other projects but “Later this year we hope to spend some time together and take a look at what possible futures we might enjoy.”

Check back tomorrow for a Q&A with Gordon.

Will the Q&A with Mike be interactive? If so, here’s my Q for MG:
Mike, I know you’re currently reading a book about stimulating creativity, will you be willing to lead the other band members through creativity stimulating exercises in order to spur new music creation, or will Tom and Trey take the majorities of those duties again?

Thanks,

Jon

Question for Mike:

Chaz | 6/26/2008, 5:19 pm EST

I like Trey, but I hate hippies.

CW | 6/26/2008, 9:23 pm EST

Chaz – wake the F up. If you lost faith in Phish after 97, then why are you reading this. Sure, some of the more structured Phish lost it’s edge in the later years, but the most recent Phish is the best improv jamming ever in their Phishtory. See y’all this Phall!

alexB | 6/26/2008, 10:30 pm EST

its def happening

Couz | 6/27/2008, 7:10 am EST

You mean that they broke up?

Chaz | 6/27/2008, 9:11 am EST

I didnt say faith, i said FUNCTION. Put down your pipe and learn to read and comprehend. If your going to say their music from 92 compares to 97+, your fooling yourself. Proof is in the music. That is not to say 97+ wasn’t enjoyable, but the scene behind the scenes at the shows drove the band in the wrong direction. Im certain Mike, Page, Fish, and Trey will agree.
The way you “fans” are talking now, its not surprising.

Yours truely,
Chaz

Phish jumped the shark with their Simpsons appearance. Maybe one of the few times a band guest spots on that show and no one knows who it is, the other one being Sonic Youth in the classic Homerpalooza episode. WOCKA WOCKA WOCKA!!!

Kidding . KIDDING!

Question for Mike:

What are your, if any, ideas on touring again? For you personally I mean to say. Would you prefer to get back into things with a europe-esk type tour, as in small venues either in the states or in europe, or would you prefer to get right back in the mix with arenas and amphitheaters? On another note: Looking forward to the upcoming release, congrats, and you always layed down the funk!!!! Be Easy and in good spirits!

europe? | 6/30/2008, 11:08 am EST

euro-tour? are you kidding me? what a way to dis the fans. You’d have to be richie rich to do something like that.

I’d think that if they were smart they would keep ticket prices reasonable. Look at pearl jam, those greedy bastards charge $75 bucks a pop, through ticketbastard, their sworn enemy. Looks like PJ sold out and is now in ticketbastard’s back pocket.

page said “if they come back there will be no distractions”….are they gonna go underground like the Beatles?

andro | 6/30/2008, 8:11 pm EST

2009 is gonna be a great year. I cant f******* wait!!!! By the way, chaz, you really do suck. So do you senor burns.

PRAYING 4 09'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | 7/1/2008, 11:45 am EST

To: europe?

If you recall. When the boys last ventured to europe it gave them a chance to return to smaller venues and get more intimate with not only the crowd but themselves, it also allowed for them to perform newly written material, without to much worrying what the reflect would be. They also were quite funky during those few years. I mean not to say that I would prefer a europe tour. But you have to understand if we want them back for us, they have to do it for themselves first, to allow them to go in whatever direction they prefer to go. And I do not think that they would immeditaly come back in europe, but after a possible short tour in the states would that be something they would be willing to consider doing agian.
And I dont think the boys would ever submit to $75 tickets, they have more respect for us than that. I believe they will always have mail order for that purpose alone. Lets not compare them to Pearl Jam.

i hope you all realize that anything that came out of the speakers during ANY point of Phish’s career has and always WILL BE pure genius, drenched with more creativity, soul, and talent than anything any of you and i will ever be capable of.
phish phorever.

Chaz,
They just got bigger after 94-95, (maybe a direct correlation to Jerry passing away) which means you couldn’t see them in the small venues anymore.
So of course the bigger the venue the less enjoyable the shows

They jammed like no else the entire time. The scene changed, but the music really didn’t (except for a larger selection of songs).
If you are stuck on only liking Antelope, YEM, Harry, Bowie and other early classics, then you gotta move on bro. No one is gonna wait for you.

I love the fact they came back to Red Rocks.
I never thought CO. would let them back there.

Man I would love a European tour. I have been living in Europe since 2001

//Scott
