Kanye West Blogs Back, Calls Bonnaroo Organizers “Squid Brains”

6/25/08, 9:05 am EST

Following his tumultuous early morning performance at Bonnaroo, Kanye West has finally taken to his blog to discuss the whole matter (and by “discuss,” we mean “type angrily with the Caps Lock on”). “I’m typing so fucking hard I might break my fucking Mac book Air!!!!!!!! Call me any name you want…. BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL!,” ‘Ye yells in the post. According to West, the root of the problem lies with the communication breakdown between him and the Bonnaroo organizers: “WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH FUCKING IDIOTS WHO DIDN’T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY. THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WHERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE … I HAVE A FUCKING LIGHT SHOW DUMB ASS, IT’S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS!” In the end, West apologizes to the fans not for making them stand around for five hours but for not being able to give them the performance he wanted. “HAVING AN EXPENSIVE STAGE CUTS MY PAYDAY IN HALF… CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL!!!”

they should have changed the name of the festival to “Kanye Sucks Music and Arts Festival 2008″ after what i saw on sunday. i saw more anti-kanye shit that afternoon than ive seen for anyone besides george bush. fuck him

Josh | 7/8/2008, 10:00 pm EST

Whatever…i was at Bonnaroo and WAS a huge fan of mr. Ye. But what he pulled at roo was so egotistical, and to not even offer an apology to his fans, who waited over three hours for him to come up on stage…should have just brought Kweli/Luipe up on stage and all would have been forgiven…instead you lost a fan Kan-man.

BigMikeOsley | 7/7/2008, 3:44 am EST

Ok then. I am over it. I just wish I would have checked out the other bands that I skipped in order to get close for Kanye. I will admit that the sound was awesome for the show. I just wish the drugs were still going strong at that point of the night!

BadAssDave | 6/26/2008, 9:32 am EST

So what Kanye is saying is that it took them 3 hours to take down Pearl Jam’s set and put up his, which basically tells me one of two things: He’s either fucking full of shit (almost more so than he’s full of himself) or he had too much fucking shit. I don’t doubt that the show he had planned would have looked amazing, but that shit’s not for Bonnaroo. I heard initially that his stage was set for an hour before he took the stage. If so, I recommend that he stops whining about it now and starts learning how to be a real musician. See ya’ll at Bonnaroo 09!

Anonymous | 6/26/2008, 7:10 am EST

So he takes a week to say this?

“Kanye West doesn’t care about roo’ people”

LoneKanyeDefender | 6/26/2008, 1:55 am EST

Most everyone I know who has seen the Glow in the Dark tour has said it was one of the most amazing shows they have ever been to. Clearly he is a “difficult to deal with artist-type” who insists on getting his way, but so are 90% of other great artists who are perfectionists about their work. What I doubt is that he was taking a beauty nap btw 1:30-4:30 asking the audience to eat cake. The fault is probably a combination of Bonnaroo people, his people, some miscommunication, etc. When I saw the tour elsewhere it reminded me of a Springsteen show where guy leaves everything he’s got on the stage. I realize his high-fashion/ postmodern/ extravagant style of music is not going to appeal to everyone but it’s not fair to knock it as sell-out. Have an open mind and you’ll see this is more Warhol, less Puff Daddy.

James | 6/25/2008, 11:23 pm EST

I was there at Bonnaroo waiting for the “great light show” that Kanye was going to put on. But what actually occurred was some lame graphics and two or three bursts of fire. It would have been so much better had he just walked out on stage, asked talib to join him, and rocked the fucking place. And how can you blame the organizers when 149 out of 150 bands made it relatively on time for their shows?

Cory | 6/25/2008, 7:22 pm EST

Newsflash, Kanye, you asshole. The festival isn’t about you. It’s about the fans. There are 70-80 other bands that are there too, and they all know how to follow the rules. And don’t blame the organizers of Bonnaroo. They have been putting on amazing festivals for the past 7 years, and you’re the FIRST asshole to criticize how things are done. Well, guess what? That’s how festivals are. Don’t pull that shit at Lollapalooza. I don’t care if you’re back in your home city. Better yet, make a spectacle of yourself. People will flood NIN’s stage instead of yours. Grow up, asshole.

1)
hm i dun like him personally but i like his music… at least its complex hiphop with soul-samples which is awesome
his way to create real hip hop shud be honored… i dun see how u can say hes superficial have u ever even listened to ALL his albums?!
sure ure right: graduation is juz bragging bout himself but u gotta understand that hes celebrating his graduation ;)
without him there wud ONLY be shit like soulja boy right now

2) letting ppl wait that long wasnt right but he doesnt even say that it was okay… all hes sayin is that we shud give him respect for trying his best… and im pretty sure he did
at least hes writing what he actually thinks and thats being real and not being plastic like some other ppl who wud juz write they are sry will never happen again etc…
at least he showed up i waited for 2 hours at festival for nas to show up and in the end it was canceled cuz he never showed up^^ juz sayin that this gets too much publicity compared to other stunts artists did juz cuz its kanye west and not some other person…

Festival goer | 6/25/2008, 5:58 pm EST

Premaddona mother fucker. I didnt wanna see your sorry as at all to begin w but when you cut phils set short, which pissed me off a whole lot. I decided to check you out(not realizing Galactic was playing) I wated for about 40 30 min before saying fuck this and fuck kanye im goin to sleep. 800,000 For a 45 min mediocore performance is bullshit. If that was yor all then your then your sorr as hell. You dont understand a festival like bonnaroo. you shouldnt of been there in the first place.

lazymoon13 in CHI | 6/25/2008, 4:19 pm EST

pardon my previous spelling, RICH EGOTISTIC CRYBABY WITH A PLATFORM!!!! and you can keep that in CAPS!!!

lazymoon13 in CHI | 6/25/2008, 4:17 pm EST

i’d pay double what ever this fool is robbing his so called fans for and wait triple the time just to see an aged and reformed tribe called quest or digable planets show. bubble gum hip hop has to fade, but fools keep supporting it just like the sh*t metal/rap bands. please just fall off. like none of you ever happened. take it back to the 90’s. love how this idiot mentions the exact model of his laptop just to let you know how he rolls. rich egotistic crybaby with a playform. nothing more. why doesanyone buy his bullshit? see through it, and WAKE UP!

Jungleland | 6/25/2008, 3:10 pm EST

Kanye is lame. So are the Bonnaroo organizers for not telling him to leave his laser-tag court at home. Go back to real bands next year.

To the guy who called me glib. | 6/25/2008, 2:54 pm EST

I find it laughable that you could refer to me as ‘glib’ and make a statement like “…it is all smoke and mirrors to the fact that his music only holds up in the ghetto or on MTV” in the same space. Maybe you need to refresh yourself w/ the meaning of the word b/c you are either extremely ignorant or made a thoughtless, superficial statement which is the definition of glib. I’d say a little bit of both.

Tron | 6/25/2008, 2:51 pm EST

I love Tron…I didn’t know he was making a remake of Tron ive! So sad to hear that the king only made $800,000 at Bonnaroo…poor guy! His cut was a mere 200K! This guy should hang up his boots and go back and find his roots. His mother would have set him straight on this type of baby behavior. excuses excuses excuses…Does anyone even like Kanye West anymore?

tg | 6/25/2008, 2:12 pm EST

An embarrassment to the music industry.

FORMER FAN | 6/25/2008, 2:03 pm EST

It took him a week and a half to write that gibberish? He says he’s all about the fans, but if he respected them he would have written that or something more intelligent the next day. And he doesn’t have the balls to take ANY blame? How dare he mention anything about money. That spoiled bitch makes me sick.

PRL JM | 6/25/2008, 1:57 pm EST

Look, I’m a Kanye West fan, I’ve been for a while, I was at Bonnaroo and I was super excited to Kanye performing after the great Pearl Jam. In Kanye’s blog he emphasizes that Pearl Jam ended their set an hour late, that doesn’t explain a three hour delay, no one knows what happened between 1:30 and 4:00 that made mr. West so late but everytime I looked up at the screen it prompted us that he would be on in a half an hour… This went on for two hours. Pearl Jam always runs their show a bit late, and he didn’t even acknowledge the fact that he switched stages twice during Pearl Jam’s set. I understand he’s upset that he’s people are saying he doesn’t care, but if you knew about this stage set issue, you shouldn’t have even bothered. I’m still a fan Kanye, but you’ve lost my respect.

Michael Jackson | 6/25/2008, 1:30 pm EST

uber tool

Wow | 6/25/2008, 1:30 pm EST

Kanye sucks, spoiled little girl.

C-white reply back | 6/25/2008, 1:25 pm EST

C White…you dont get it…Kanye sucks. He is a pro tools beat artist. No matter how many flames, light shows etc…it is all smoke and mirrors to the fact that his music only holds up in the ghetto or on MTV. Live shows are for musicians that actually play 200 shows a year. Go to Vegas if you want to see a show. 90 percent of festival goers go for the tunes. And his tunes are pretty lame. Its over man..move on to something new! He jumped the Shark! Dont be glib

Courtney | 6/25/2008, 1:12 pm EST

fuck that. no sorry for the crowd? bitch

nico | 6/25/2008, 1:01 pm EST

Kanye, wtf?? what light show? ooooooo, I saw 2 big flames WOW!! and you singing to track, alone on stage and you cry about stage costs and half pay?!!! what about artists that actually have musicians, DJ’s and singers. In 10 years you will be having temper tamtruns backstage at county fairs because the squels of the pigs next door at the farm auction will be too loud.

you suck and dump your ego. it will ruin you.

fortunatesun | 6/25/2008, 12:51 pm EST

Perhaps, Kanye is correct in calling the organizers Squid Brains…No offense to Kanye, but he is solely a marketing tool…I don’t see any significant talent there…The “organizers” should never have booked him to begin with…in the end you always get what you pay for! Or as we say in my town…”you don’t know what the monkey ate till he craps…”

Maze | 6/25/2008, 12:49 pm EST

Seems like a publicity stunt. Everything he does seems like a publicity stunt. I hate myself for paying him any attention. I wish he would just walk off into the sunrise…

cwhite | 6/25/2008, 12:37 pm EST

First, anybody itching to talk trash about Kanye’s Bonnaroo performance should read his side of it in its entirety instead of going off of hearsay and parts of the blog pieced together to be sensational. Case in point, @ the Glow in the Dark tour in Woodville, TX the 2 video screens broke down and were showing the blue screen of death… after asking 3 times (in a normal tone)that they turn the screens off if they weren’t working he stopped the music and told them to “Turn off the F***in screens if they couldn’t get them to work” When news of this broke armchair critics who love to fill these comment sections started w/ there usual talk about Kanye flipping out and being a diva etc, but if you were there you know that wasn’t the case at all. The fact of the matter is Kanye cares more a great deal about all aspects of his music. That’s why his albums have so many videos when it eats your budget, THAT’S why he spent his own money to help Rhianna update her stage show and that’s why his stage team began trying to set up for his show 24 hours in advance. Bonaroo would not allow them to touch anything until Pearl Jam finished their set WHICH WENT AN HOUR OVER IT’S SCHEDULED TIME… AN HOUR(funny how that’s never mentioned in all this talk of realizing you’re not the most important person on the bill, respecting the festival and being professional). RS was quick to print the parts where he said he was about to break his Macbook Air and berated the Bonaroo organizers, but does anyone else notice how the completely glossed over the apology he offered? Was there any mention of him saying that he goes days w/ out sleep working on his stage show so it can be memorable for the fans? Any mention of him saying that he had to change his show b/c the stage was so wet and filled w/ trash from ppl waiting (again… waiting for Pearl Jam to finish their hyper-extended set so Bonaroo would green light his ppl to set up) that he couldn’t move w/ out slipping? So before you’re so quick to blame him consider the fact that the Bonaroo organizers knew well in advance every aspect and dimension of his show. He was not asked to strip it down for the festival and why should he have to? That would be a disservice to anyone who chose to go to Bonaroo instead GITD. Why should a fan be shortchanged b/c they wanted to see Kanye AND other artists they like if they couldn’t afford to pay for tickets to both? I’m not saying Kanye is above reproach or that he never gets out of pocket. I’m just saying know the facts before you form an opinion.

kanyewan-yay | 6/25/2008, 12:37 pm EST

Kanye at Bonnaroo? What has happened to that festival?

Sounds like a terrible choice and even worse performance from a sub-par rapper and decent producer. He is nothing more then that. (although you would think he is the greatest ever by his immature actions)

Lance | 6/25/2008, 12:24 pm EST

Kanye, You have always been overrated and your Light show is something to be desired. If I want to see a real light show, I will pop in a Pink Floyd DVD. I was there and I have never witnessed such blatent disrespect for an audience. If that was your all, my first inclination was correct OVER-RATED.

blindp | 6/25/2008, 12:15 pm EST

D-BAG

bowieno | 6/25/2008, 12:05 pm EST

ACT LIKE A MAN! Wussy!

BOOOOOOOO!!!!! | 6/25/2008, 11:40 am EST

kanye is such a drama queen! we want results, not excuses you piece of shit! It looks like you’ll go out like 50 cent kicking and screaming as Lil Wayne is taking the #1 spot in hip-hop.

zewlee | 6/25/2008, 11:31 am EST

it’s not like kanye’s was the first ‘elaborate nighttime production’ organizers dealt with. Flaming Lips were so nighttime, Wayne Coyne rolled out into the audience inside a huge glowing bubble ball (top that kanye). And what about metallica’s fireworks and pyro. Same with My Morning Jacket.
But, at least Kanye made the attempt to put on his full show.

Tom | 6/25/2008, 11:16 am EST

“CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL!!!”

Thats fair…I guess your “all” is just a mediocre performance….cause thats what you gave.

MMJ is taking sides | 6/25/2008, 11:14 am EST

MMJ…nobody is hating. Just speaking the truth man. The fact is that Kanye doesn’t get the culture of these festivals is ignorant enough. You are Glib! Fact is…he should have stripped down his show and his ego…it was bad! Bonnaroo isn’t the MTV or BET awards…its about the music not the ego! Uncalled for…he’s hype and yes…you are glib!

Shap 88 | 6/25/2008, 11:08 am EST

Um, haven’t Bonnaroo run one of the best, most successful festival shows for most of this decade now. But they’re “squidbrains,” was it? Perhaps Kanye doesn’t realize he wasn’t the most important person on the lineup that night…gasp. Nope, he’d never realize that. He have more credibility if he didn’t pull this spoiled brat crap a dozen times before on everything from awards shows to the show Punked. He layed down some great, GREAT beats for great rappers for a long time, but he isn’t one himself. I wonder if he was talking to himself while typing his blog in the same boring, monotone style in which he rhymes.

mmj | 6/25/2008, 11:03 am EST

You peole need to get off of kanye’s D! He apologized and explained himself- don’t be ignorant. He has an extremely elaboate stage theme for his show and wanted to put on the best performance possible. Don’t listen to bloggers and these whiny forum posters Ye, they’re just haters.

Tommy T | 6/25/2008, 11:02 am EST

BTW - RS - Take the link to his blog off this article - this bitch doesn’t need any more traffic going to his weak ass site.

Tommy T | 6/25/2008, 10:55 am EST

HAHA! - The only time someone should attempt a glow in the dark/light show is when your a member of Pink Floyd. Kanye go back to the suburbs you spoiled excuse for a musician.

Stevve Jobbs | 6/25/2008, 10:35 am EST

oh kanye, thanks for the obligatory, rapper-esque, product placement. A shiny, new Air book is on its way!

Attendee | 6/25/2008, 10:30 am EST

First off…the show was horrible. This guy is tone deaf and out of touch. If that was his all then he should scale down his show because it was really bad. Music fans are starting to smell the fakeness of this pro tools hip Hop. Learn an instrument and do it old school.

stupid Kanye fans | 6/25/2008, 10:28 am EST

Who is the crybaby??? Kanye, (who I am no fan of), or the stupid fans who waited around for hours to see him onstage. Whatever.

Bonnaroo | 6/25/2008, 10:26 am EST

Yeah Because Bonnaroo is a small scaled event…it is their fault that you have some elaborate, laim 80’s throwback, oil burning show! Doesn’t this guy have enough money? Has been… go retire and wear your crown in your backyard ego-maniac.

Music Fan | 6/25/2008, 10:22 am EST

Being a professional means having to adapt in certain situations. This festival has been going on for six years now with the biggest names in music having played there and I have never heard of a problem like this at Bonnaroo. If his music was good enough in its own right, he could have come out and briefly spoken with the fans about problems with his set, gotten with the DJ, forgotten about the pyro, and rocked the place (which many big-name hip-hop acts are capable of doing). Instead, he had no plan B, made an appearance to fulfill his contract and then left without saying a word to the audience. Lastly, his blog really looks like it was written by a fifth-grader. Seriously.

Jay Z | 6/25/2008, 10:20 am EST

Don’t you have enough money Kanye? Who cares that your payday was cut in half…your reign is over! You have securely joined the graveyard of Hip Hop has beens you passive aggressive baby. Your show sucked! and so do you

favian | 6/25/2008, 10:16 am EST

cry baby

micker | 6/25/2008, 10:02 am EST

AHAHAH!!! he’s got on a diaper in that picture. CRYBABY.
