Radiohead Rake in Praise From Bono, Release “From the Basement”

6/24/08, 3:20 pm EST

Bono has called Radiohead’s pay-what-you-want experiment for In Rainbows “courageous and imaginative in trying to figure out some new relationship with their audience,” the U2 frontman says in a letter to be printed in the NME. The comments are in stark contrast to those made recently by U2’s manager Paul McGuinness, who said that Radiohead’s experiment “backfired.” “[Radiohead are] a sacred talent, and we feel blessed to be around at the same time,” Bono said. Despite Bono’s praises, U2 will not follow a similar path as In Rainbows when they release their new album. In other Radiohead news, the band’s From the Basement performance that aired on VH1 in May is now available on iTunes. The “video album” was recorded in producer Nigel Godrich’s basement and features performances of the songs from In Rainbows.

Basically the only newsworthy tidbit in this article the part regarding the From The Basement Performances. Aside from that, could journalists stop busting a nut everytime Bono has an opinion about something? Why are people still treating Bono like he’s the friggin pope or something?

It is newsworthy because he is disagreeing with his manager to clear up any confusion. It has nothing to do with papal treatment the U2 singer. In fact i would argue that the opposite is true: most anyone in the music industry can make a comment about something, but when Bono does so, he gets reactions like “Why are people strill treating Bono like he is the Pope?” Give me a break. He’s just a musician like anyone else, issuing a letter to clear up some comments made by his manager.

Of course Radiohead were courageous, but what of Nine Inch Nails? I suppose Bono overlooked Trent Reznor releasing “The Slip” for FREE, in a variety of formats. That seems even more forward-thinking and revolutionary than the “In Rainbows” release.

Does everyone forget that the Smashing Pumpkins released two whole albums for free ont he internet years ago?

Anonymous | 6/24/2008, 10:31 pm EST

Well if not for Radiohead’s move, I doubt Nine Inch Nails would be brave enough to try the new format.

Yah didn’t we learn from south park, that hes really just a big pile of crap

Lisa | 6/25/2008, 9:57 am EST

The Smashing Pumpkins did this years ago….Corgan and Chamberlain are far better than that pile of garbage they call radiohead. screw bono too.

when these losers create albums like gish, siamese dream, or mellon collie they can talk. until then they can shut up

Ummm…Gish sucked and the Pumpkins are really bad. You just don’t know how to get out of your high school nostalgia and grow up musically. Thos albums you listed are fair compared to Joshua Tree or Ok Computer. Maybe you just dont get it….

Saying someone has not grown up musically is probably one of the most arrogant comments I have seen on the internet today. Congratulations BONO, you have become todays biggest internet douchebag.

I know I’m leaving this comment a tad late, but some people here apparently don’t see the difference between selling an album at a price the consumer states and releasing it for free. They are 2 completely different things, so stop comparing them to Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead did this shit first.
