Guns n’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” Leaker Gets FBI Visit

6/24/08, 5:45 pm EST

Last week, the Internet was rocked when California blogger Kevin Skwerl posted nine newly leaked Chinese Democracy tracks, including three previously unheard songs allegedly from Guns n’ Roses long-awaited album. Skwerl — who used to work in the distribution department of Universal Music and is now a Web designer — runs the blog Antiquiet, and says he received the tracks from “an anonymous online source.”

Yesterday Skwerl was surprised to find himself face to face with two FBI agents who paid a visit to his day job. “It was kind of an ambush,” Skwerl tells Rolling Stone. “When I came back from lunch they were waiting in the lobby for me. It’s a little creepy they know where I work.” Two young FBI officers, who Skwerl describes as “Mulder and Scully types,” questioned him for 15 minutes about where he got the tracks and made plans to visit his house at 7:00 a.m. this morning.

“I wasn’t sure if they were going to come by with a warrant and trash the place, like in the movies,” he says. “It was nothing like that.” The FBI officials wanted to see the original files, but Skwerl erased them last week per instructions from Axl Rose’s attorneys. Skwerl ultimately gave them second-hand files that are now widely available on the Internet.

Last week Skwerl’s blog crashed from the traffic flood that resulted from his controversial posting. “My host contacts me and says, ‘What the fuck did you do?’” I go, “Uhhhh. I posted some music.” He goes, “What exactly did you post?” I go, “Uhhhh. [Meek voice] New Guns n’ Roses.” He goes, “Motherfucker.” Before long his cell phone rang with an unfamiliar 323 number. “It was a really cool guy from the Gn’R camp that was a middle man between someone who was very angry and me. He was trying to reach out and see if I’d go without a fight, which is more or less what I did.”

Skwerl agreed to take them down, but a cease-and-desist letter soon followed threatening possible legal action. “I’m not so worried about that,” Skwerl says. “It’s a legal grey area since it wasn’t for download, it wasn’t a finished product. We aren’t sure who owns the recordings. I feel like I might survive this.”

Update: Skwerl wants to make it clear that he’s unsure whether or not he broke the law, but he will cooperate with the feds in any way he can. “If legal proceedings come my way, I’ll face them 100 percent. I’m not afraid of that. I did what I did, and I’ll face the music if I have to.”

T-Cap | 6/24/2008, 7:25 pm EST

Well, if you think your music’s good enough, then who cares? Good music stands by itself.

Oh well.... | 6/24/2008, 7:29 pm EST

This was bound to happen. Axl turns in the album to Geffen in April. The probably started to press the disc and this stuff leaks. THE LONGER YOU WAIT AXL THE CHANCES OF US GETTING THE WHOLE THING GET BETTER EVERY DAY! The reviews have been mostly positive, quit being a worry-baby and release your masterpiece. Other than that, i’d say if there isn’t a release date soon, the whole thing will be leaked in a couple of months. I’m glad the dude posted those tracks, maybe it’ll get Axl off his ass.

Axel Foley | 6/24/2008, 7:33 pm EST

A total publicity stunt on the part of the writer who wrote, “gonna get the FBI.” I pray this album never comes out so we don’t have to see Axl’s face plastered around like Chris Martin’s. See cover below!

Ari | 6/24/2008, 7:54 pm EST

The Gun is loaded and is ready to fire. This was only a warning salvo.

misanthropy today | 6/24/2008, 8:10 pm EST

i know skwerl. They should pay him a fee for marketing their forthcoming album. If the bait and switch isnt a good marketing ploy I don’t know what is.

I listened to the songs on Antiquiet and they sounded really good.

I don’t think he’ll get into any trouble because i’m pretty sure he didn’t know it was illegal to do that, and i’m not even sure it is.

Hells Angels | 6/24/2008, 9:02 pm EST

Who the fuk really gives 3 shits about axl rose anymore anyway?
the guy sux and wears weaves. his newly found band members all suck. it aint the classic line-up. soi fuk them.. it wont be the same and the album wont be a seller. axl lost it a long time ago..
what a bunch of dumb shits. hey axl , you suck!
this is 2008. not 1990 again.

WOW | 6/24/2008, 9:15 pm EST

“I don’t think he’ll get into any trouble because i’m pretty sure he didn’t know it was illegal to do that, and i’m not even sure it is.”

ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED?!?!
Obviously both you and your idiot friend who leaked the files. It’s not surprising that you would come here and brag about knowing him, you’re all a bunch of pathetic coat-tail riders.

yawn | 6/24/2008, 9:36 pm EST

axel who?

benny | 6/24/2008, 9:46 pm EST

If you don’t like the songs or the band, don’t be a jaded cynic and spread your negativity. Simply close the window or redirect your browser to another website.

Dig the songs even in old demo forms (from 2002, no less). Can’t wait for the final album, hopefully it will be out soon so people can listen to the music and make their opinions off the material rather than the drama and politics that follows them.

Miguel | 6/24/2008, 10:17 pm EST

Axl wouldn’t have to worry about this stuff if the album would have came out 10 years ago when he started building the hype. It appears he had plenty of good material to release for sometime now. Too bad for Axl, it’s not the 80’s or early 90’s anymore. People post, download (many times illegaly) and swap music for free.

govnndotcom | 6/24/2008, 11:16 pm EST

Damn, the fedbots trip over themselves to follow up on some leaked audio files owned by some rec-co jews. But ask them to chase down 30 million illegal invaders and they are suddenly nowhere to be seen.

Ah, AmeriKwa. Somebody push the button already.

mike clink | 6/24/2008, 11:40 pm EST

the new gnr is a complete joke.

Joker77 | 6/24/2008, 11:53 pm EST

The greatest rock soap opera continues. Love GNR and Axl. Who else provides entertainment like axle? I heard the music, its good and if he ever puts it out it will be another great chapter in the GNR soap opera. And RS loves Ale for it and he sells magazines. Rock on Axl!

sounds like a publicity stunt to me. lame

nawaf | 6/25/2008, 4:23 am EST

this is the latest sequal for the never ending story that axl plays the lead in :) i think that GNR cd will be a cool cd at least better then what VR had done

former fan | 6/25/2008, 7:56 am EST

The songs were crap. Axl sounds terrible. The only one worth a second listen is Madagascar.

DennyWilson | 6/25/2008, 9:09 am EST

Very few “lost” albums actually meet our expectations. I think Axl & Co. should scrap the project and start anew.

Josh | 6/25/2008, 9:33 am EST

What’s funny is Axl with all his cease and desist orders. Hey, the music sucks and already sounds dated. But in the end it’s all free publicity and all the money Axl will be on the hook for when the album tanks, and IT WILL TANK.

Axl get over yourself, lose the cornrows, grow some eyebrows back. Scrap this album, write a new one, put it out in three months time. That would be a masterpiece, this current shit is masturbation.

muzakman | 6/25/2008, 9:45 am EST

It is a great album that is above the heads of most metalheads. It rocks but it also has the Elton/Queen influences that Axl loves.
If it doesn’t sell 5 million it will be called a flop and Axl will crawl back into his shell, when really he should be proud of making something that rocks but has sophistication. Don’t play to the lowest common denomanator Axl.

Ralph Stade | 6/25/2008, 10:05 am EST

great story – no problem with people who post things that don’t belong to them getting taken down – it needs to happen – I love the part “we aren’t sure who owns the recordings” – but I’m sure he realized he doesn’t own them – I also love the “30 million invaders” line, as if one law being broken makes the next okay

Also since when does “not knowing” about a law get you off the hook?

vince neil | 6/25/2008, 10:28 am EST

axl u suck … velvet rev u suck. after all gnr have only 1 great album, 1 boring with 3 rocking sons and 1 with versions with 4 decent semi-ballads. boyz, the mighty crue alone in the 80sh have 5 marvellous albums. this is the reality, crue=legend, gnr=a band who has had their moment, axl= a total dumb.

vince neil | 6/25/2008, 10:39 am EST

crue=legends with 5 marvellous albums under their belts alone in the 8th
gnr=one hit wonders with 1 album (appetite, the others suck)
axl=sex simbol for one day. now a fat yellow chicken addicted to donuts.

so, crue rocks, gnr sucks.

Kevin | 6/25/2008, 11:05 am EST

It’s guns and roses, you know they are out of cash and will sue anyone they can.

Plus, it’s G&R, who cares? They suck arse and always have. I mean come on, they are the left over pop rock from the 80’s. Yea, pop rock as in equal to Britney Spears, but rock.

GNR | 6/25/2008, 12:29 pm EST

Didn’t Vince Neil kill someone driving under the influence? He should be in jail for the rest of his life.

Nathan | 6/25/2008, 12:57 pm EST

Generally when it takes 15 years to release an album, there are going to be tracks leaked at some point. Give your head a shake, Axl.

felix da housecat | 6/25/2008, 1:02 pm EST

axl rose and gn’r did not sick the feebs on thses guys – it was univeral music group who did – so get your facts straight mfers!

Fozzie Bear | 6/25/2008, 1:20 pm EST

Folks, here’s how it lines up. Chinese Democracy comes out before the end of they year (probably in time for Xmas sales). GNR reunite before summer of next year, when Mr. Adler gets his crap together. If GNR are smart, VH1 will be in tow for a reality show/documentary, regardless of what Axl told Sebastian Bitch. Any questions? WOCKA WOCKA WOCKA!!!

SID VICIOUS | 6/25/2008, 2:25 pm EST

REUNITE GNR AND THE CRUE THIS TOUR WOULD BE BETTER THAN A WET DREAM……..TAKE THAT TO HEART…..LOVE SID

Jake Marble | 6/25/2008, 5:16 pm EST

Who even fuckin cares? G n R haven’t been relevant since acid washed jeans were cool! The songs sucked. Axel Rose sucks! Shit…when “The Axel Rose Band’ played in San Fran recently, you could get tickets for a fucking DOLLAR on Craigslist! Fuckin prima donna douche bag…go away…

Victor Viceroy | 6/25/2008, 6:07 pm EST

I think it’s now or never for Axl. The ticking clock has reached 11:59pm.

These songs that are out there are getting more worn out by the second (they even toured the world with them). With the exception of 2 new songs, the fans (aka the piggy bank to GNR) have known these tracks for YEARS.

That said, I can’t really see myself being excited to have to wait out Better and etc. being released as a singles, to finally reach material that’s fresh.

And I hope these songs are not grouped together on any ONE of the “rumored” 3-4 albums if they’re ever released. An album of old tunes won’t be much to get excited over. I’m not opposed to NEVER seeing any of these songs on an album in lieu of all new stuff.

Whatever GNR has, they need to get it out there for better or worse, live it out and move on to future music making. Quit feeding the damaging “hype” monster with delays.

Fozzie Bear | 6/25/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Jake Marble has lost his. GNR is coming. And acid-washed jeans are still cool. WOCKA WOCKA WOCKA!!

Josh | 6/25/2008, 6:56 pm EST

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how good Chinese Democracy is, it will never be 15+ years in the making good. Chinese Democracy could be as good as Sgt. Peppers, Exile On Main Street, Dark Side Of the Moon and Highway 61 Revisited combined and it will still be critisized for taking so long. My opinion is, from the music I’ve heard, this will be a very good record. But the real importance of this record will be the circumstances involved in getting this record to materialize. Let’s face it. The making of, and circumstances surrounding Chinese Democracy is unprecendented. Never has an album taken this long to complete and release, never has an artist/band (as popular as GN’R version 1) had this long a gap in between records coupled with the vast difference in musical landscapes. When GN’R were at their height there was barely an internet let alone anything called file sharing. Thirteen million dollars spent on making an album when file sharing did not exist and still not released in a time when file sharing is running rampant and will possibly be the demise of the present music ditribution model. This is a hugley important record artistically and culturally. Everyone who is interested in music on an emotional level as well as a means of support is watching what this record will do when and if it actually gets a released date. Chinese Democracy can single handedly be the example that people in the industry use to decide whether they should go on the way they are, change dramatically or leave the businesss all together. this is a major event wether you are a GN’R fan or not. this album represents something so much bigger! to so many people.

kliff | 6/25/2008, 10:46 pm EST

they should have arrested your ass for theft and murder of the music industry. now we’re stuck with shite like britney & other useless music cuz of senseless dopes like you who think it’s okay to steal music that artists spent tons of money & energy on.

therooster | 6/25/2008, 11:43 pm EST

Whoever says that GNR were just a cheesy 80s band or “leftover pop rock” or one hit wonders are pretty ignorant. Look at how much the Illusion albums sold. Actually listen to the music and hear how different it is from you average hair metal of the 80s. It was faster, heavier, had some punk influence and the lyrics were negative and ark as opposed to a Poison song about partying. Crue fans on here are saying the new GNR is a joke. Are you kidding? The Crue released and album with John Hoolihan singing and then later tried to tour with a chick drummer.

The fact is that Axl is trying some new and different with this music. Listen to Velvet Revolver to hear what GNR would sound like with the old bad. Slash writes the same recycled riffs over and over again. No one has to like any band, but hating on new GNR just because of how Axl acts or the fact that Slash isnt in is just a tad narrow minded. A lot of reviewers, journalists and members of the listening public seem ready to jump on this record even before it comes out. Give it an open minded chance is all.

Viktor | 6/26/2008, 1:17 am EST

I’m calling bullshit on this. Sounds like a publicity stunt, though for what purpose I cannot imagine. Why the fuck would the FBI go chase down a file sharer over GUNS ‘N ROSES? Aren’t they supposed to be tracking down TERRORISTS and shit like that? If this is true, which I doubt it is, then it’s one more example of the government doing it’s job very poorly. Seriously, think about this. Album leaks happen EVERY DAY, and never before has the FBI went after someone for that. THAT IS THE ASSHAT ORGANIZATION THE RIAA’S JOB. “WHERE DID YOU GET THESE TRACKS? THIS IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY, AXL ROSE MOTHERFUCKER.” Give me a break.

Greg D | 6/26/2008, 10:53 pm EST

Chinese Democracy will be an excellent album. It will be better than any other stuff has been in years. Axl Rose is only responsible for his own life. Our expectations and somehow declaring that the album should already have been released is a misperception on our part.

Axl is on his own path in life and has a right to take his time and do what he has to do. Having said all of that, after the inital criticism is thrown at this album by insecure, ignorant critics, its quality and genius will be recognized. End of story.

RockStar | 6/27/2008, 1:51 am EST

I have to agree this story seems a lil bogus to me,
but as for the Crue Fans blastin GnR, i grew up listening to all these bands, my first three albums were Shout at the devil, look what the cat draged in and Appetitte for Destruction, and i have to say GnR blew all the others away, anyone who calls GnR a one hit wonder, what world were you living on?
there were only the #1 rock band in the world at one time, honestly Crue is a great band but they were a Hair band that tried to be tuff, their lyrical content a 14 year old sex craved boy coulda wrote, and theres not alot of complexity in their music either, with that being said it is just down right gritty rock in roll and that is what makes it great, however GnR and Skid Row had more balls than Crue and didnt need a Kiss wannabe stage show to Flash their way popular.
its kinda funny to me that the New Crues image with the leather pants and badass rocker attitude is a direct rip of what GnR and Skid Row were doing in the 80ies and 90ies.
crue should go back to hair and makeup at least then it would be true to thier oldself.
but as great as i loved all these bands, the first time i heard Master of Puppets i have to say my world of music changed for the better forever,
so to recap, old GnR rocks, Crue is good not as good as GnR tho, Skid Row as good, better than crew as far as talent goes,
but old Metallica pwns all.
with the only obvious exception being Ozzy who is the metal God.

Anonymous | 6/27/2008, 9:52 am EST

No band today can come close to the success of G n’ R. New music today blows. It’s unoriginal and uninspired. So for all you idiot Fall out Boy and My Chemical Romance fans, go listen to Appetite for Destruction to hear what a masterpiece sounds like.

Motor Breath | 6/27/2008, 2:37 pm EST

Anonymous – you’re right Appetite was a masterpiece but the only problem is that the GNR from Appetite and the GNR today are two totally different bands. The original GNR doesn’t exist anymore people. That would be like Paul McCartney calling his old band Wings – The Beatles. Of course all of the Beatles except for Paul and Ringo are dead but you get my point.

UNLESS THE ORIGINAL BAND MEMBERS RE-UNITE IT WILL NEVER BE GUNS AND ROSES!

Mike D | 6/27/2008, 3:51 pm EST

Is there a Van Halen/Guns ‘n Roses reunion coming, or is this story about Velvet Revolver?? All these posts are confusing me!

Thanks for your assistance.

Cal | 6/27/2008, 3:54 pm EST

The Most mistunderstood thing about Chinese Democracy is that for one album its took 15 years and some delay’s. What the media won’t tell you is that Axl has 3-4 albums worth of material that will be released. All of that 13 mill is for 3-4 albums not just one single record. I’ve heard the leakes and I love every single one of them GO AXL !!!

tacoflavoredkissesformyben | 6/28/2008, 12:23 am EST

I’ve heard all of the leaks and I must say, the material is pretty good. Unfortunately, “Guns n roses” is a revolving door of musicians. After 10 distinct songs have been leaked, what’s the point of releasing it? I believe we will never see another Guns n roses album until all of the original members reunite (which may be a possibility since velvet revolver just broke up)

Totalchaos | 6/28/2008, 9:11 pm EST

The funniest thing is,,,,,he is GNR and can do what he wants,,,so y dis him,,,its his life,,,,so if u dont like it,,smokem if u gotem and F@CK OFF.

SKWERL'S MOM | 6/28/2008, 10:27 pm EST

HE DOES EXIST. THIS WAS NOT PLANNED.
IT’S GOOD TO WAIT FOR THE RIGHT TIME FOR EVERYTHING, BUT WAITING TOO LONG CAN BE A MISTAKE. SKWERL IS A GENUIS AND LOVES WHAT HE DOES WITH PASSION. HE HAS PUT ANTIQUIET OUT THERE FOR THE WORLD TO SEE, AND HAS ALSO GIVEN THE BAND THE BEST REVIEW THAT ANYONE COULD GIVE AND THE BUZZ OVER THIS WILL BE GREAT FOR THE BAND. EVERYONE AND THEIR “MOTHER” WILL WANT TO GET THIS. THIS IS A BRILLIANT MASTERPIECE AND WILL BE KNOWN AS ONE OF THE BEST ROCK ALBUMS EVER. AXL’S VOCAL RANGE IS INCREDIBLE AND THE “SKWERL” , MY SON, HAS DONE THE BAND A FAVOR TO GET THE BUZZ GOING. LET’S HOPE THEY REALIZE IT’S TIME TO RELEASE IT!!! AND BTW… THE FBI DID INDEED PAY HIM A VISIT.

I hate rock! | 6/30/2008, 7:58 pm EST

I’m really embarassed for this guy if that is really his mom posting. If it’s not I’m really embarassed that he would post as himself and call himself a “genuis”. LOL

A G'N R Fan | 7/3/2008, 12:22 pm EST

We have all been waiting for many years for the release of this album. I don’t want this idiot to screw it up. Axl has been toiling at this for years, and the record company has spent a lot of money ($13 Million according to the NY Times) that they deserve to recoup. Lets get this album out now, before therre are other idiots that do this. BTW, it would not be hard. What about the guy making $10 stuffing the boxes with the album. He says, I think I will help myself to one. Boom, posted on the Internet, and this happens. I did see that TIME ran a review, so it looks like this is really going to happen. Rock on.

adelaide | 7/6/2008, 2:02 am EST

To all the arrogent (i dont have an open mind) people, u gotta know axl is a star and u guys are just nobodys with ya dead end jobs and ya fat assed bitches. And to axl if ya read this the new gnr music works, its quality and just as good if not better then use your illusions. But do a old gnr timer like me a faver and get back with some off the old players, just IMAGINE all the happy people woohoo ooo aa oo. Sorry i think im off topic now.

Ketch | 7/10/2008, 9:29 pm EST

Here we go again, more leaks. Which is why Axl keeps posponing the album because you have all those fuckhead critics saying it’s shit, so he returns to the recording studio to improve it just so he can impress his so called “fans”.
Axls never been about money, it’s been entertaining his fans, he leaves concerts halfway through when something is chucked right at him. I’d do the same thing! Because the people there are meant to be his fans who are meant to like him, do you throw dangerous shit at people you like? I don’t think so, and everyone makes him out to be the bad guy, that the breakup was all his fault. Well Velvet Revolver didn’t exactly last half a century either did they

AxlRoseHater08 | 7/13/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Why Does he keep postpoing the damn cd???????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????

realist | 8/11/2008, 7:08 pm EST

Axl has done what he wants most if not all of the time. As was stated in someonelses post below, It’s Axl’s deal, his life so he can do wht he wants to with it. He may be planning to have released post-humously; who knows? I would like to hear album like many others. There does seem to be a possible danger in taking so long to release the album.
On the positive side, those who were/are GNR fans will likely buy, appreciate, and possibly love the album. On the negative side, the former albums, which contained the majority of the original band, differed a great deal from each other. I have always liked “Appetite” the best and only a handfull, or more, songs on the “Illusions”. So, it seems to be a gamble with those who are not familiar with GNR or were/are not fans, but fans of very different styles and genres of rock. The old fans and the unfamiliar both could love, hate or be indifferent. I’ve heard more positive than negative comments from those who have heard the tracts. This is exciting. If not for such comments I and probably others might have grown close to indifference already. Dangers still remain. Axl, we wait hopefully, but who knows for how long. Godspeed to you and your effort.

moe | 8/27/2008, 10:00 pm EST

I’m sick of all this shit about this goddamn album. 14 damn years of B.S. This arrogant asshole will probably release it when he is in depends and cruseing a tricked out hoverround. As for therooster, you are a DEE,DEE,DEE. Get it right dumbass. It was John Corabi that replaced Neil in Crue dipshit, not John Hoolihan. Bet you never even listened to their shit and your just a posur.

moe | 8/27/2008, 10:12 pm EST

two words for ya skwerl, buy a butt plug. Hell. Buy two. You’ll need them for the next 10 years while your ass is in lockdown in a 5″ by 5″ cell jackass. If it was my music, I’d hunt your ass down and skin you alive.

genehoke | 8/28/2008, 4:58 pm EST

Hmmm. Guns n Roses sucks and needs to go away now. They had their day back in the 80’s/90’s, but Axl is the only original member left anyway. The rest had the good sense to get out before Axl completely lost his mind. This album, it if ever comes out (which I doubt), will be garbage.

kenneth | 8/29/2008, 4:39 pm EST

Honestly, I’ve never seen FBI take action quickly against someone who leaks new music onto the internet. That’s what happens if someone leaks a 14 year process of an album. I barely feel sorry for this guy. Even if he didn’t know he was breaking the law or not, he should have seen this coming. By posting new GnR songs via his blog, he’s basically shouting “COME FIND ME, I LEAKED NEW SONGS”

I’m not a GnR fan but if the songs are incomplete as they say, I don’t blame the “very angry guy” on the other side of Skwerl. No one likes to release their product incomplete (although Axl must’ve tried really hard not to complete an album of 14 years and counting.

In the end, both side got what they deserved. Skwerl is being tried for leaked songs and the record company for getting the songs leaked after putting off an album for 14 years.

If you read my honest opinion through, I gotta say you’re cool

First of all if anyone needs to be busted up is that annoying little dread headed fucker called Axl Rose who lied for years to his fans about his unsignificant little album that probably exists only in the form of a few mediocre songs.Secondly whenever I hear something new about GNR it’s never related to music. So the guy shared some songs on the Internet, big deal! This woos named Axl Rose should be pleased there’s still somebody willing to check out his shitty music. So,when will the fuckin’ album come out?

in the 80’s/90’s they were the best band ever . now there just a peice of crap and total loosers. and so is every freakin weirdo who likes there music now. but I have to say the best song from chineese democracy is better. But I dont think the band will last long. they will just crash down and burn, and so will all there music and albums and everything. and I hope that day is soon because Im tierd of hearing there crap on the raido and pretty soon if they dont just crach down and burn all there stupid songs will be on guitar hero and rockband so to put that whole story into to words they would be THEY SUCK
