Following the success of two weeks of the Beatles‘ music on American Idol, the Fab Four’s catalog may be branching out again: Reps for the band are reportedly talking to both Activision and MTV Games about possibly releasing a Guitar Hero or Rock Band based around Beatles’ tunes. According to a source close to the negotiations, the final deal could be worth millions, but first must get the approval of both Apple Corps. and EMI. Apple Corps’ tight grip on the Beatles catalog has loosened since Jeff Jones became the company’s chief executive, as evidenced by the band’s music appearing in American Idol, Cirque du Soleil Love show and the film Across the Universe. “To my view, it’s only a matter of time before we see Beatles songs that are the original recordings in motion pictures, in television work, and yes, maybe even one day in a commercial,” said Sony/ATV chief executive Martin Bandier, who holds more than 200 Beatles copyrights. Whichever video game company wins the battle to release a Beatles-themed game, a source says a deal “could be reached in a matter of weeks.”

i think The Beatles would be great along with Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd

What does Guitar Hero have to do with corporate tyranny?
Srch | 6/23/2008, 5:32 pm EST
still love tha beatles!!!
it would be great to play those legendary songs!!
bobob | 6/23/2008, 5:41 pm EST
Finally. Who cares about preserving the integrity of the songs? We all know em.
zep22 | 6/23/2008, 7:10 pm EST
uhm, well–you could always learn to play the REAL guitar. then you could attempt to play “yesterday” like a real person. computers, technology and the beatles on guitar hero? this world is going to shit. that would be like robert plant touring will fall out boy. disappointing.
Sammy V | 6/23/2008, 7:25 pm EST
Look. I’m all for spreading great music around, particularly if it’s the Beatles. Of course, we’ve also had “Across the Universe”, “LOVE”, and the American Idol thing. Now, all the girls in my school say they absolutely LOVE the Beatles, but they’ve never heard any of their other songs, hell songs actually recorded BY them. If they were to be put on Guitar Hero or Guitar Hero, we’d have idiot 15-year olds parading around saying “I LOVE THE BEATLES!” when they’ve only heard one or two songs from them.
This has ruined Boston, Kansas, KISS, Aerosmith, and other classic artists for me. And I can assure you, as only a 14 year old, that if you put the Beatles in a fucking video game, their reputation will be tarnished.
I just don’t want a band like the Beatles to get the wrong sort of respect is all.
Prance | 6/23/2008, 10:01 pm EST
geez like movies, and tv and stuff like that, but like commercials come on if John lennon was still alive things would be different. Music is not a tool for corporate advertising, like they have enough money to get some people to make there own music rather than stealing someone elses so that people will buy their crap
Ted assatly | 6/23/2008, 10:58 pm EST
the beatles would be a good section but not a whole game based only on their music. its just a waste
Mason | 6/23/2008, 11:25 pm EST
I think that the rights should go to Rock Band because it focuses more on the entire band then just the guitarist.
Renglish | 6/23/2008, 11:34 pm EST
Does anybody really think this is a great idea? The Beatles made great music but it’s not exactly anything challenging for either game.
jesse dillon | 6/24/2008, 11:23 am EST
I hope that it doesn’t end up bieng like what michael jackson did to the beatles through nike and stuff
dudeman | 6/24/2008, 1:40 pm EST
I would much rather listen to the entire White Album instead of “Through the Fire and Flames” or “Beast and the Harlot”, but these songs bring a challenge that gives the game replay value. I don’t see that happening with the Beatle’s catalog.
Bangers-N-Mash | 6/24/2008, 1:50 pm EST
The only way I won’t care about the commercials… is if:
1. “Fixing a Hole” is used to ‘plug’ tamptons (heh)
2. “Back in the U.S.S.R.” is used in a commerrcial to promote a brand of Vodka.
3. “I Want To Hold Your Hand” is used in a commercial for California tourism… focusing on a certain new law that was passed.
p.s. the only “rock band” game I’d approve f invovling Beatles tunes, is one where the players play REAL fucking instruments… the same way that Beatles songs inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn.. not a game controller with buttons
Me | 6/24/2008, 3:04 pm EST
seriously to everybody saying pick up a real instrument please shut the **** up.
the real Dave D | 6/24/2008, 4:38 pm EST
i swear to god, if i hear or see one more person say something about picking up a real instrument instead of rock band or whatever, i will find them and shit on their lawn…i play rock band religiously and never knew how to play guitar or had an interest to until i played rock band/guitar hero…they alone allow me to be able to pick apart songs when i hear them on the radio and now make me want to pick up a real guitar(which i did)…why are people hated for playing a game when thats what they want to do? its fun, simple, and there’s good music…do you need to shit on some1 because they dont want to play real guitar and just want to play a video game in their free time? if you feel that way then i, in return, shall shit on ur lawn

Seems to be a lot of fuss over a silly game. Grow up and learn to play a guitar…you know, the kind with real strings, played by real people. Damn, I am so glad I came from the sixties generation, when music was real and so were the musicians.
Anonymous | 6/25/2008, 2:20 am EST
HELL NO!
was the thought when I first seen this.I have all of The Beatles albums on my computer before american idol, rock band, guitar hero.It would screw The Beatles so much that i will rebel and sell my guitar hero if that happens.John Lennon is rolling in his grave-right now by that idea.
I have respect for The Beatles and John Lennon. American Idol killed The Beatles songs everyone who is a beatles fan must know that.
amy | 6/25/2008, 1:06 pm EST
okay, i think it is an amazing idea. if they want to get the beatles more out there i am all for it. + stop with the whole “pick up a real instrument” deal. some people arent coordinated enough. so shut your fat blubbered up faces. i am a HUGE fan of the beatles, and i STRONGLY disagree with Anonymous. because, evidently, that fag doesnt know what he is talking about. how would it kill the beatles to get more of their music out there? + to get more people involved with them? HMM?! well if you dont know, then shut up. because no one really wants to hear your opinion if you cant stand behind it. american idol did not “KILL” the beatles. people singing their songs. it was good that they did that. because i love the beatles. i sing their songs all the time. so GET OVER IT!
Nate | 6/25/2008, 1:55 pm EST
I think everyone who is so concerned with the “integrity” of The Beatles is hilarious. John Lennon admitted in an interview that when he and Paul would write a song, they would typically use the money they would receive as motivation, as in “Let’s write ourselves a swimming pool today.” John Lennon was a political activist, but he was also a very astute businessman, who is to say that he would not love this game and want his music to be a part of it? When The Beatles came out, the 14 year old teeny boppers were there target demographic! How does time change that?
Ddog | 7/14/2008, 3:46 pm EST
@Ray:
Yes, and everybody stop playing those stupid tennis video games and pick up a real tennis racket. Also, no more racing sports car video games. Everyone please get a real sports car. In fact, let’s do away with all “games”. It’s reality or nothing!

So What If Kids Only Like Music after hearing it off of gh or rb? At least they are listening to instead of that Rap Shit That Is on the radio! I Hope This Allows Kids To enjoy and appreciate this great music!
Anon | 11/23/2008, 4:49 am EST
pick up a real instrument? well i already play the violin, mandolin, and guitar… i think i’m entitled to play as much beatles-themed guitar hero as i want… as is everyone else, because telling a pro at guitar hero that he should just play the real guitar is like telling a katamari damacy player to go start rolling boulders over police officers… i’m sure it would be very fun, but i don’t think it’s the very best idea in the world… so if you like guitar hero a lot, play it until 4:00 AM… if you enjoy playing an instrument a lot, may you someday make george harrison look like a beginner… but don’t tell others which one they should like more because that does nothing but make you look like a dumbass…

IF LENNEN WAS ALIVE AND WORKING AT APPLE AND THE 3 BROTHERS (YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN) CAME IN AND ASK FOF COVERING HUNDREDS OF BEATLES SONGS HE WOALD SAY.. GET OUT YOU A**HOLE I DONT WANT YOUR SHITY MONEY AND LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE
Caitlin | 12/24/2008, 12:10 am EST
1) I play electric and acoustic guitar,a little rockband never hurt.
2)I think a beatles rockband would be AMASING! When i play rockband i think of the beatles and i start dancing like paul in their video of “i wanna hold your hand”. I get hassled all the time because i dont listen to crap.. i mean rap. I have EVERY beatles album, i think its about time people listen to some REAL music, where the crap they listen to comes from! I’m 16.. and my friend and i are in LOVE with the beatles! I think its about time kids my age stop listing to dregrating music, violent music, music with such vulgure words, I really cant beleive what i hear from the kids these days.
to shorten this up,
Beatles rockband …. best thing that could ever happen in video game history

surprised gene simmons hasent made a guitar hero KISS. he did make a guitar for it tho. lol
Who Cares? | 3/5/2009, 9:56 pm EST
All I have to say is that I can’t believe I spent the past few minutes reading all of this (including the hypocritical fact I am now adding to this). What amazes me (prude that I may be) is what potty mouths (& no shame about it) some people have: F-word, S-word, etc. That was a bit off topic, maybe , so here goes – love the Beatles, play guitar, am in a Brit Invasion tribute band, play video games, Lennon rode in a limo – there you go.

“1. “Fixing a Hole” is used to ‘plug’ tamptons (heh)”
LOL. I’m fixing a hole.. where the… rain.. gets in?
Been a fab 4 fan since I was knee high to a grasshopper, and I have mixed feelings about the game.
Certain things about it are turnoffs, and Sammy V summed it up quite well. The game will definetly help people fall in love with the beatles, genuinely, but there will also be a large number of people, mostly kids, who think that “liking” the beatles makes them cool and gives them a great sense of musical integrity. It happens already where I work, a girl will comment on my beatles shirt, and how they are a huge fan, I ask what their favorite album, or hell, even SONG is, and they can’t think up an answer. For being the biggest band there will ever be, there is a surprisingly small number of people who are truly fans.
I’m pretty stoked for the game, though, and that may make me selfish when taking into account those of us who’d like to preserve the integrity of the Beatles’ music. Really I just want to jam out on all my favorites. WTB rocky raccoon

Being a little bit of a Beatles fan myself (yes, I know “Yesterday,” “Hey Jude,” “All You Need Is Love,” “Yellow Submarine,” et al), I think it would be a pretty neat idea to have a bunch of songs available for play ON ROCKBAND. Guitar Hero focuses Way too much on the guitar, and to me that’s not the Beatles style at all.
I agree that it’ll wind up producing a bunch of 14+ year old wannabe “Beatles fans” who don’t know what they’re talking about. That’s gonna be real dang annoying to those of us who actually LISTENED to their music when we were younger. It’s good to know that more people will be LEARNING about them though. That’s always good. Of course, they’re obviously using The Beatles to draw in more adults (preferably older than, say, 20-25 years old) and hopefully get them hooked on the game so that they’ll buy a bunch of other songs.
Now before you jump on me, YES, I do play real guitar. Rock Band has influenced me to start taking classes so I can learn while I’m still in college. I’m loving learning how to play. ![]()
I’m also considering purchasing a $2,500 electronic drumset so I can really get crackin’ on that, since the Ion drum kit is quite good, but even when arranged like a real drumset, it doesn’t do everything I’ll need it to do. :\ (Besides, I’m majoring in Music Ed. and I play percussion.
)
While I like what Guitar Hero is doing with the guitarists, I feel that Rock Band focuses more on the band as a whole, which is why I’d support The Beatles being in a Rock Band game. There’s my opinion.

This is the best new in a while, just saw paul at coachella and i couldt stop thinking on having those songs for rockband(the beatles ones) I never played a real instrument, i would love to, im more an sport guy than a musician. the best thing of rockband is that you get to hear the best rock songs ever, and what is better than the beatles???..
knl | 4/25/2009, 6:14 pm EST
I love guitar hero and love the beatles. Love is one of the greatestevents I’ve ever been to. I think young people need to fall in love with their music and get to the roots of rock. Oh yeah…they should do a Queen game too!!!
Katerina | 5/4/2009, 9:35 am EST
I absolutely am in love with The Beatles and I am all for Activision making a Guitar Hero game for The Beatles. I love both. And I know that is something I would buy the first day it came out. But it should defiantely have “Come Together” and “Revolution” on it. (:
lee | 6/1/2009, 1:45 pm EST
great news. the beatles had great guitar songs. jeff beck, and eric clapton have both said that george harrison is one of the greatest and most underrated guitarist in history. his solos always complimented the songs.
tnh | 6/6/2009, 12:28 pm EST
i am in LOVE with the beatles! i think you should make a guitar hero game rather then rockband cause rock band sucks!
sarah | 6/26/2009, 1:54 am EST
I’m only 18 years old and the Beatles are a huge part of my world of music. They are the only band that has inspired me to get off my ass and learn how to play guitar. I do think it’s a great idea to put the Beatles in a video game, but in the long run I don’t think they should. It’s just a waste of money to buy the game and then press some dinky buttons and get nothing out of it. Sure, you may become a rockband expert but where does that get you in life?
I’m not trying to say you should go get a real guitar and make your time worthwhile. I’m also not saying you shouldn’t buy the game. Do what makes you happy. The only part I care about is that the Beatles will continue to grow and become an even bigger part of the world, and that they always have a place in the future.
From the time they put out their first album till the time they put out their last, and after and beyond, the Beatles have been bigger than life. They were four extremely gifted musicians pouring out their soul for something they loved with all their heart. They gave the world beautiful musical arrangements, stunning lyrics, and took dimensions of music to higher places which no one had dared to explore.
The Beatles are definitively worthy of being on Rockband, but for me the question is, “Are we worthy enough to play this game, and if we do, will it degrade the quality of their music?” I mean, it shows that the Beatles music is top notch if iTunes hasn’t even gotten their hands on it. So should we really try to break that spell? I think there’s a formula that says that to make it work out right, we have to stick to how things went in the first place to make things better. Heck, I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore.
I guess all I’m trying to say is that I think their music should remain as it always has. On albums, tapes, cds, 8 tracks, and whatever the hell else you can think of. It’s the only way I think the beauty of their music will remain preserved. It’s just degrading to put the Beatles down to a level of video games where they can be compared to other bands.
So if you get the game please have fun and sing along, and do me a favor. Go on the i-net or a store and listen to the music which isn’t on the game. Open your ears and hear the music which has been such a huge part of billions of people’s lives. Just because the Beatles are from the sixties doesn’t mean you can just throw them out the door. And yes, although I said I wouldn’t, I really think you should pick up a real guitar. You’ll see how painstaking and challenging it really is to play the Beatles music, and I think that is the best way you can find respect for the world’s most famous and amazing band in the history of time.
So finally, I feel like I’ve said enough. Yes – I’ll admit I may have said to much. But it got the feelings I feel out there. The things I experience when I listen to their music. And basically why the Beatles Rockband is a great idea, but shouldn’t be happening.
Thanks to all who read this and are Beatles fans. I can only hope the Beatles will live on forever.
Hey John, Paul, George and Ringo –
you guys are gonna rock my
life until I die. I hope I
make you proud.
