Smashing Pumpkins Plot “Gish” Box Set, Tour

6/23/08, 1:43 pm EST

To celebrate the 17th anniversary of Gish, the Smashing Pumpkins are planning to release a box set of their debut album complete with material preceding Gish’s release, according to the Pumpkin’s Website. Plans are already underway for the box set, and while the exact contents of the release are currently unknown, the Pumpkins expect to embark on a Gish tour to coincide with the special edition — both of which are scheduled to happen later this year, according to the site. The Gish reissue will likely be the first move in the master plan Corgan has schemed since becoming a record label free agent following the release of Zeitgeist. The band is also rumored to be playing 20th anniversary concerts at some point this year as well.

I for one am happy to see Billy take control of his life and how to distribute his music/art/passion/love etc…
Who cares if he knows he needs to make $ as the rest of us have to as well right? What do you think being a musician is? Just playing music all day and not creating new ways of distributing it. Oh wait I guess when you are being told what to do(having a Boss to get paid) that’s all you would expect from everyone else is to be like yourself (being a robot)…. There’s personal gain from NOT selling yourself to the devil.

Go Gish!!!
I am buying mine to give Billy some $ just for the haters hating…maybe I’ll buy 2 for that matter and give it away to someone….

no he couldn’t have waited 3 years, b/c they ain’t gettin any younger. i’ve been a fan since the beginning, and imho i think zeitgeist was awesome, and i’m glad they are still an active band. it’s better than 90 percent of the s#it that is out now. i’m sick of all the negativity as well, and it’s nice to see other people expressing that. i like jeff, ginger, and lisa, and i’m glad their onboard. i’m sure when they auditioned for it, they knew ahead of time what their role would be and that billy and jimmy would steer the ship. if they’re happy with that, then i’m happy for them. if iha and darcy didn’t want to do it, then oh well. it was offered to them. f#ck all the naysayers.

bowieno | 6/24/2008, 5:49 pm EST

17 is a great number. It’s a good time to reintroduce such a powerful masterful masterpiece! Those complaining go to Your Justin Timberlkae shows with your panties!

SiameseDream | 6/24/2008, 3:00 pm EST

Billy and Jimmy are the pumpkins….nobody cares about iha or darcy…their contributions were mininmal at best.

Gish is better than nevermind and should be celebrated…look forward to this.

Ok, their sound with the 2 new members isn’t much different. But I will never see them in concert unless it is the original 4. It’s just not exciting to me to see 1/2 the band.

gisher | 6/24/2008, 11:55 am EST

Count me in! Gish was an incredible debut, for a now legendary band. History can’t be erased.

…I’m also excited to hear new material in the coming months.

ROCK ON.

I don’t believe Corgan EVER said this was being released to commemorate “17 years”. I think these are the words of Daniel Krep, the writer of this article.

joe | 6/24/2008, 1:54 am EST

regardless of whether they are “relevant” to you, Mr. philbee, they are still an outlet of art by performing group of artists, producers, mixers, engineers, etc. Whether you care or not is up to you, but ticket and album sales, along with enthusiasm by the artists themselves proves that they are still relevant to some people.

Whatever | 6/24/2008, 1:40 am EST

Billy corgan and jimmy chamberlin are the pumkins!!! James and D’Arcy only played what corgan wrote. The Pumpkins are alot more relevant than alot of these other crap bands out there.

Philbee | 6/24/2008, 12:19 am EST

The Pumpkins are not a band anymore, they are a brand that keeps Billy Corgan’s career afloat. He sells a lot more tix as Smashing Pumpkins than as Billy Corgan featuring Jimmy Chamberlain. They are no longer relevant.

Big Scott | 6/23/2008, 11:48 pm EST

Anytime there is a news release regarding the Pumpkins, the comments section is always so predictable. “Pathetic”, “Lame”, etc…etc…
Why do people who claim to not care about the Pumpkins so much, continually post negative comments? That would be my definition of “pathetic” and “lame”. I for one can’t wait for this. Sounds like great fun to hear “I Am One” and “Bury Me” live again.

blue_june | 6/23/2008, 11:25 pm EST

Gish was the Smashing Pumpkins first major studio release and debut album.
Why wouldn’t the band want to celebrate that?

And to those people who are still whining about James and D’arcy - get over it. A lot of us are happy about where the band are now in 2008 and where they’re heading. Keep your negativity to yourself.

I’m excited about the box set release of Gish and pre-Gish demos and of course the anniversary shows!

Bryan | 6/23/2008, 8:56 pm EST

Who Cares.
Gish wasn’t very good.

Matt | 6/23/2008, 8:33 pm EST

Have you ever considered that some people like numbers other than ones that end in 5 and 0? I know Billy was born on the 17th and has a track titled 17, so maybe 17 is his favorite number and would rather commemorate that than another year.

Tino | 6/23/2008, 5:41 pm EST

It’s not so much to commemorate Gish’s 17th anniversary; they’re planning to release old recordings associated with all of their old albums.

Dan | 6/23/2008, 5:32 pm EST

Thats awsome, buying it for sure.

Come to Toronto pumpkins, please!

Johnnyreb | 6/23/2008, 5:32 pm EST

I’m all for this, but its not a damn 20th anniversary tour if its not the original band, especially since none of the members are dead.

Lindsay | 6/23/2008, 5:26 pm EST

Who wants to take odds on how many members of the actual band that recorded Gish will actually go on tour to support this anniversary?

Anyone?

Mr Roboto | 6/23/2008, 5:19 pm EST

I’m excited about this. I put Gish up there as one of the best records ever made, but think the rest of the SP cannon falls way short (Siamese Dream not included). It was their creative zenith. Reaching or not, Gish still wrecks shop to this day.

Eric Con Queso | 6/23/2008, 4:53 pm EST

After all these years, I would still consider myself a pretty big Pumpkins fan. Yes, I even bought Zeitgeist and accepted the new lineup as legit.

Having said that….this 17th Anniversary of Gish has me puzzled as well. I think Corgan is really reaching here….

corganisugly | 6/23/2008, 4:44 pm EST

this is absolutely pathetic.

Zero is exactly right | 6/23/2008, 4:30 pm EST

I’m hardly surprised that Corgan is doing something so transparently desperate and lame. His artistic well ran dry long ago so there’s nothing left to do but relive past glories. It’s kind of sad, really.

mcache | 6/23/2008, 4:23 pm EST

Does this mean we can anticpate the 6 year anniversary release/tour of Mary Star of the Sea in January? Go Away, Billy

Chunga | 6/23/2008, 4:16 pm EST

This reeks of desperation. Corgan hasn’t had a hit in years and the tours are getting smaller and smaller. A Gish reissue and tour and then a couple years down the road there will be a Mellon Collie reissue and tour.

Rory | 6/23/2008, 4:16 pm EST

I suppose they’re going to do this with all the albums in the order of their release. At least I hope so.

mike b. | 6/23/2008, 3:59 pm EST

If it’s the 17th anniversary of Gish, doesn’t that mean it’s the 15th anniversary of Siamese Dream? That would be a way cooler/more appropriate box set.

Rory | 6/23/2008, 3:15 pm EST

Then don’t buy the box set or tickets to the concert. And stop wasting your time bitching about it on the internet.

I for one am excited. It’ll be cool to have high quality, non-bootlegged versions of the pre-Gish songs, and the “Gish tour” sounds interesting…

Country Crotch | 6/23/2008, 2:13 pm EST

Mr. Melon Head strikes again. Celebrating a 17th anniversary of Gish? When did 17 years become such an important anniversary? Melon Head must be strapped for cash. Couldn’t he have waited another 3 years for the big 20 anniversary to release the box set and go on a celebratory tour?
